OBS Studio is the best-supported free option for looping church sermons on YouTube Live. For one recording, add it as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For several recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC, arrange the files in a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Both workflows run on a local computer, which must remain on and connected throughout the broadcast.
Choose the right OBS workflow
OBS Studio is free, open-source streaming and recording software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The choice is whether you want to repeat one sermon or rotate through multiple recordings. See the OBS Project.

Prepare the YouTube channel and live stream
YouTube requires a verified channel that has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until service time to enable it. Use YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room to create or schedule the broadcast and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. You enter these in OBS so the encoder can send video to YouTube; the Live Control Room supplies the preview and broadcast controls. Keep the stream key private. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain eligibility and connection details.

Set up a repeating sermon in OBS
Loop one recording with Media Source
- Open OBS and create or select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name the source, then select OK.
- In the source properties, enable Local File if needed and browse to the sermon recording.
- Enable Loop, then select OK. Check the preview to confirm the video appears as expected.
Rotate several recordings with VLC Video
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- In OBS, select + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and restart OBS.
- Add the sermon recordings to the playlist in the order you want them played. Confirm the file paths are available on the computer that will stay online.
- Enable Loop Playlist if it is not already enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default. Preview the sequence to make sure each file plays and the order is right.
For both setups, verify that the source is visible in the scene and that audio is reaching the OBS mixer. If the video’s aspect ratio differs from the broadcast canvas, adjust the source in the preview so titles or important visuals are not unintentionally cropped.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, or use the connection method offered by your OBS version. Do not share or publish the key.
- Under Settings → Output, configure the encoder and video bitrate for your available upload capacity. YouTube’s current guidance gives a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; that is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee your connection can sustain it.
- Under Settings → Video, choose an output resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can handle. YouTube documents H.264, H.265, and AV1 video support in its encoder guidance.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, where available in the encoder settings.
- Apply the settings, start a short test broadcast, and check both the OBS preview and YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup for a service.

Check permissions before streaming or archiving
Make sure the church has the necessary rights for the sermon recording and every other element in the stream, including music and third-party visuals. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed to use streamed and archived content on Google services, including applicable music licenses, and to comply with its Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Review the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and resolve permissions before broadcasting.
Plan for long broadcasts and local interruptions
With OBS, the stream is sent from the local computer, so the computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available for the broadcast. Arrange for someone to monitor stream health and have a local recording or other archive plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind features can be limited on very long broadcasts. Fix common looping and streaming problems
- The live stream is not available yet: Check that the channel is verified and eligible, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Confirm that you are using the URL and key for the intended broadcast.
- The sermon stops instead of repeating: For one file, check Loop in the Media Source properties. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video.
- VLC Video is missing or will not play files: Install VLC, restart OBS, and confirm the playlist paths point to files accessible on the streaming computer.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the picture drops: Test the upload connection and reduce bitrate or output demands to a level it can sustain. Use YouTube’s live health feedback rather than assuming a setting will work everywhere.
- The picture works but there is no sound: Check the media source’s audio output and the OBS audio mixer, then confirm sound in a test broadcast before service.
- A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording instead of relying solely on YouTube’s archive.
