How to Keep a YouTube Prayer Meeting Stream Running from Recorded Sessions

A practical guide to streaming recorded prayer sessions on YouTube Live with OBS, including looping playlists, permissions, testing, troubleshooting, and cloud playout.

You can send recorded prayer sessions to YouTube Live by playing them through an encoder such as OBS Studio. For a do-it-yourself setup, create a YouTube live event, add the recordings to OBS as a looping media source or playlist, enter the event’s stream key, and test the complete broadcast before it starts. A computer running OBS must stay available for local playback; cloud playout is an alternative if you do not want a computer at home to keep running.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and that streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel before preparing the event: YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • The recorded sessions and permission to publish every included element: leaders’ and participants’ voices and images, music, readings, photographs, and other material.
  • A computer with OBS Studio, reliable power and internet, and enough storage for the recordings. A wired Ethernet connection may be useful, but it is optional and does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
  • A person responsible for checking the broadcast and responding to connection problems, warnings, or content concerns.

YouTube Live is an encoder workflow: OBS sends a live audio-video feed, even when that feed is playing a recording. Uploading an ordinary video to YouTube is a separate workflow. YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact in real time through a video feed and chat (YouTube Help).

Prepare the recordings and permissions

Build an intentional sequence

Decide whether you will repeat one session or play several in a planned order. Check the opening and ending of each recording, transitions, pauses, sound levels, and aspect ratio. Make sure the sequence is suitable for the full period it will be available; a loop can repeat indefinitely, so it may replay material at unexpected times if nobody monitors it.

Confirm rights and participant consent

Get appropriate permission to publish leaders’ and attendees’ voices and images. Avoid broadcasting private pastoral disclosures or sensitive prayer requests without consent, and check applicable privacy requirements for your location. For third-party music, images, readings, and other recorded material, credit alone does not establish permission to use it. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other copyrighted live broadcasts; identified material can replace the stream with a placeholder image or lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even licensed material may require its owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Create or select the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create a broadcast or select the event you intend to use. Review the event’s visibility, title, description, schedule, and any account-specific options before sharing it.
  3. Choose the encoder workflow and retrieve the stream settings shown for that event. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the broadcast from the stream resource that carries its audio-video feed: YouTube Live Streaming API.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to the event. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update OBS.

Check the Live Control Room for the current event’s duration, archive, and recovery options. These can be account- or event-specific; do not assume a setting or continuous-run allowance without checking your channel.

Set up OBS to loop one recording or a playlist

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the prayer-session broadcast so its sources and layout are easy to identify.
  2. For one recording, add a Media Source. Select the file and enable Loop in its source properties. OBS documents local media playback and looping in its Media Sources guide.
  3. For multiple recordings, add a VLC Video source. Add the files in the desired order and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Confirm the playlist advances and repeats as intended.
  4. Set the stream destination. Open OBS Settings > Stream, select the service or server option that matches YouTube’s event settings, and enter the stream key from the Live Control Room. The exact options shown can depend on the OBS version and chosen service.
  5. Set output and video for your setup. Configure resolution, frame rate, and output settings to match the recordings and what your computer and connection can sustain. Use the event’s YouTube stream health feedback during testing. Do not choose a higher output setting on the assumption that it improves a recording that was made at a lower quality.
  6. Check audio and framing. Confirm that the video fills the frame appropriately, the correct audio source is audible, and no desktop alerts, private information, or unintended sources are visible.

OBS’s overview covers scene, source, and streaming setup and recommends testing before the first live broadcast: OBS Studio overview.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Run an end-to-end test before announcing the stream. Check the picture, sound, aspect ratio, playlist order, transitions, and playback after a file ends.
  2. Confirm in the YouTube Live Control Room that the encoder feed arrives and review the stream health information it displays.
  3. Agree who will monitor the event and what they will do if OBS stops, the internet drops, or YouTube issues a warning. A looping source is not a recovery plan.
  4. At the planned start, start streaming in OBS and confirm the broadcast is live in YouTube Studio. Check the public viewing page as well, if appropriate.
  5. At the end, stop the stream deliberately in OBS and review the archive settings and resulting recording in YouTube Studio before making an archive public.

YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes if the creator chooses to archive it. A clean live run therefore does not necessarily settle whether the archived material can remain available; review any claim and follow YouTube’s stated process.

Choose local OBS or cloud playout

Option Useful when What to account for
Local OBS playback You have a computer that can stay on and want direct control of local files, scenes, and timing. The computer, OBS, power, and network path must remain available. Someone needs to monitor and handle problems.
Cloud playout You cannot leave a computer running or need to operate the playlist remotely. Check the provider’s YouTube workflow, file handling, account access, monitoring and recovery, data handling, and price. A provider’s product description is not independent proof of uptime.

OBS supports local media playback and looping. Cloud playout is a different operating model: for example, Looping Stream describes sending prerecorded video to YouTube. That establishes the type of service, not a comparative reliability ranking.

Troubleshooting common failures

OBS’s VLC Video source is missing

OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC source to appear. Install it, then reopen OBS and check the source list. If you only need to repeat one file, use a Media Source instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

Check that the selected service or server and stream key in OBS match the current event in YouTube Studio. Confirm that OBS is actually streaming and that the computer has internet access. If a key was exposed or replaced, update OBS with the current one.

The video or audio is wrong, silent, or out of frame

Check the selected file, source properties, scene visibility, audio meters, and playback device. Review resolution and aspect ratio, then retest the entire sequence rather than checking only the first seconds.

A playlist stops or does not repeat

Confirm that the intended files are in the VLC playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file, check Loop on the Media Source. Test what happens at the end of the last file.

The broadcast drops or YouTube interrupts it

Check the computer’s power and internet connection, then inspect OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room for the condition that stopped the feed. If YouTube identifies third-party content, do not simply restart the same material; review the warning, permissions, and any Content ID allowlisting needed. A separate YouTube page describes restrictions related to active copyright strikes, Community Guidelines strikes, and matching another copyrighted live broadcast: YouTube guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions. Follow the platform’s appeal or restriction process rather than trying to bypass an active restriction with another channel.

Common questions

Can I loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live?

Yes. Send it as an encoder feed from OBS or use a cloud playout service, provided your channel can livestream and you have the necessary rights to the content.

Does a live badge mean the recording is authorized?

No. Live status describes the broadcast workflow; it does not establish permission to use the recording, music, images, or participants’ contributions.

Can the stream run without leaving a computer on?

Not with local OBS playback: the computer running OBS and its network path must stay available. Cloud playout is an alternative when you do not want to keep a local computer running.
