How to Normalize Podcast Audio Levels for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Make podcast episodes more consistent in a 24/7 YouTube stream by measuring programme loudness, checking true peaks and auditioning transitions. YouTube’s encoder settings are not a LUFS target.

Measure each episode’s integrated loudness, adjust it to a consistent editorial target, control true peaks, and listen to episode transitions before putting the files into a 24/7 playlist. For a continuous stream made from prerecorded podcasts, preparing episodes offline is usually the more predictable approach: a live controller can smooth changes over time, but it cannot anticipate what comes next and may alter expressive dynamics.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies audio delivery settings, not a required LUFS target. Treat loudness standards as useful reference points—not as YouTube rules or guarantees of how loud every viewer’s device will sound.

What to measure: programme loudness and peaks

Two different checks help make episodes sound consistent without clipping. Integrated or programme loudness, measured in LUFS, describes the overall level across a programme or representative segment. True-peak and digital clipping checks address brief peaks and available headroom. Matching peak readings alone does not make two episodes sound equally loud, and matching LUFS alone does not ensure that peaks will avoid clipping.

  • Integrated loudness: compare whole episodes or representative programme sections, including recurring intros, ads, music beds and interstitials if they are part of the stream.
  • True peak and clipping: check short peaks after gain and dynamics processing. Keep the encoded output below 0 dBFS to avoid digital clipping.
  • Listening: audition the speech, music and the transition into the next episode. Meter readings cannot tell you whether processing sounds tiring, pumps noticeably or removes meaningful emphasis.

Do not use the standard OBS audio meter as an integrated-LUFS meter. OBS documents its meter as a sample-peak programme meter; its VU display is an RMS reading over 300 ms, not a proper loudness meter. Use a meter that reports integrated or programme loudness for the normalization decision.

What LUFS target should you use?

There is no YouTube Live loudness target in the YouTube encoder guidance cited here. The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128 version 5.0, published in November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. It is a broadcast reference, not a YouTube-specific requirement.

The EBU’s R 128 S2 version 3, also published in November 2023, gives streaming context rather than a universal preset. Its baseline approach recommends streaming unchanged at −23.0 LUFS. Where metadata is not managing device gain and a broadcaster chooses to control dynamic treatment before streaming, it describes an interim distribution range of −20.0 to −16.0 LUFS. The choice depends on the playback context: a quiet room and a system with ample gain and headroom differ from a phone with limited gain and more background noise.

Choose a target that fits your editorial and distribution chain, then apply it consistently. If you use one of the EBU figures, identify it as that standard’s recommendation and context—not as a rule imposed by YouTube or a promise of identical loudness on every listener’s device.

Normalize episodes before adding them to the playlist

  1. Gather representative material. Include the quietest and loudest episodes, plus recurring intros, ads, music and interstitials. Do not pick a target based on a short isolated phrase; measure a whole programme or representative segment.
  2. Measure integrated loudness. Use a loudness meter that reports integrated or programme LUFS, and record readings consistently. Measure comparable portions of each episode, including material that will actually be heard in the stream.
  3. Select and document the target. Decide on a consistent editorial target for your distribution chain. If you adopt −23 LUFS or another EBU streaming reference, note the standard and its context in your workflow so it is not mistaken for a YouTube requirement.
  4. Apply gain to reach the chosen target. Make the gain adjustment based on programme loudness, not on peak-meter readings alone.
  5. Use dynamics processing only where needed. Compression can help manage large speech-level variations; restrained limiting can control true peaks when a gain change leaves insufficient headroom. Avoid aggressive settings that make speech tiring, pump audibly or flatten intended emphasis.
  6. Check the processed file. Re-measure programme loudness and check true peaks and digital clipping after processing. The relevant check is the actual output that will enter the playlist.
  7. Listen to the episode and its boundaries. Audition representative speech and music, then the transition to the preceding or following episode. Include silence, beds and ads when they are part of the stream; a clean average reading cannot reveal an awkward transition.
  8. Keep a consistent record. Note each file’s measured loudness, gain change, processing and peak check. Recheck affected files when you change source gain, processing or playlist composition.

Offline normalization or real-time correction?

Approach Strength Limitation Best fit
Offline normalization and checks You can measure and adjust complete episodes, inspect true peaks before broadcast, and audition episode transitions. Requires preparing and checking files before they enter the playlist. A playlist of prerecorded episodes when consistency and repeatability matter.
Real-time loudness correction Can manage longer-term loudness changes while the stream is assembled or played. Cannot predict future content; may change intended dynamics or cause audible level changes. Cases where offline preparation is impractical, with conservative settings and active listening.

The Audio Engineering Society’s loudness-normalization resource, accessed in 2026, describes a rolling analysis period between 30 seconds and two minutes for active real-time controllers. It notes that longer periods usually sound more natural and create fewer audible artifacts; this is contextual guidance, not a mandated setting. Listen for pumping, abrupt shifts and flattened dynamics rather than treating a controller’s setting as a substitute for review.

Set the YouTube live audio delivery separately

Loudness normalization concerns perceived programme level; encoder settings concern delivery. YouTube’s Live encoder guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo. Those are transport settings, not a loudness target. The page recommends testing with audio and video activity similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health.

  1. Configure the encoder’s audio output for AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo, following YouTube’s current live encoder guidance.
  2. Run a representative test with the kind of podcast audio, music and transitions the continuous stream will contain.
  3. Monitor the live stream and listen to the result rather than relying only on the encoder’s local meters. Check both speech level and whether peaks distort.
  4. Repeat the test after relevant changes to source gain, filters, playlist composition or encoder settings.

Troubleshoot inconsistent volume and clipping

  • Episodes have similar peaks but sound different in loudness: peak readings do not measure integrated LUFS. Measure programme loudness with a suitable meter and adjust gain to the chosen target.
  • OBS appears to show a useful level, but episodes still vary: OBS’s documented meter is peak-oriented, and its VU display is an RMS reading over 300 ms. Use an integrated-loudness meter to compare programmes.
  • Speech is consistent, but a transition sounds jarring: audition adjoining episode endings and openings, including music, silence, ads and interstitials. Adjust the relevant files or their boundaries, then listen again.
  • The stream clips after normalization: check true peaks and encoded output after gain and processing. Keep output below 0 dBFS; use restrained peak control if needed rather than assuming a LUFS target prevents clipping.
  • A real-time controller pumps or flattens speech: reduce the aggressiveness of the correction or use a longer analysis period within the AES contextual range of 30 seconds to two minutes. If feasible, normalize episodes offline and compare the result by listening.
  • The test sounds different from the local source: test through the live encoder and actual YouTube stream, and monitor stream health. Repeat after changing the source, filters, playlist or encoder configuration.
