To change sermon videos without ending a church’s YouTube livestream, keep OBS and the YouTube live event running, and switch the video in OBS. Prepare the next clip as a media source or its own scene, then cue it while the encoder continues sending to the same event. Rehearse the transition and monitor YouTube’s preview, picture, and audio: this workflow avoids deliberately stopping the stream, but no setup can guarantee every switch will be interruption-free.
Why changing the video does not require ending the stream
YouTube receives the feed from your encoder, while OBS controls what appears in that feed. Keep the encoder connected to the existing event and change the content in OBS; do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube event just to move to the next sermon video. YouTube explains the encoder connection through the event’s server URL and stream key, and OBS provides scenes and sources to organize the output.
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: use the one assigned to the event, and reset it only when needed. If you generate a new key, update OBS with it.
Prepare OBS before the service
- Choose how to organize the clips. Create a dedicated scene for each sermon video if volunteers need clear, rehearsable cues or if clips use different layouts. Alternatively, keep one scene and change its media source when clips share a layout. OBS scenes can contain media sources and other elements, and its hotkeys can switch to a specific scene.
- Add and check each video. In the relevant scene, add a Media Source and select the correct local file. OBS lists supported local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Confirm the chosen file and check its audio before service.
- Set playback behavior deliberately. OBS Media Source controls include looping, restarting playback when a source becomes active, hiding the source when playback ends, and closing a file when inactive. Choose the behavior that suits the clip and rehearse it; for example, enable restart on activation if returning to a scene should start the clip from the beginning.
- Make the cue easy for the operator. Assign scene-switch hotkeys if useful, then test them from the keyboard the volunteer will use. A dedicated macro keypad is optional; a regular keyboard can trigger OBS hotkeys.
- Confirm the live event and preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the event preview before the service. Confirm OBS is sending to the intended event using its server URL and stream key, and verify picture and sound in the preview.
Switch to the next sermon video during the stream
- Leave OBS streaming and the YouTube event active.
- At the agreed cue, switch to the prepared OBS scene for the next clip, or change the media source in the active scene using the rehearsed controls.
- Watch the outgoing picture and listen for audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and, where possible, confirm the stream is accessible on the channel or watch page.
- If the wrong clip, playback position, or audio appears, correct it in OBS while keeping the event connection active. Do not end the YouTube event as a routine response to a scene change.
Choose a scene-per-video setup or a replaceable source
| Approach | Useful when | What the operator must manage |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated scene per video | Clips need different layouts, overlays, or other sources, or volunteers benefit from a clear cue for each video. | Prepare and rehearse each scene; select the right scene at the cue. |
| One scene with a changing media source | Clips share a layout and you want a shorter scene list. | Confirm the selected file and playback state each time the source changes. |
The better fit depends on how many clips there are, whether their layouts differ, and what the volunteer can operate confidently. Rehearsal matters more than adding extra controls.

Rehearse recovery and end the event correctly
Test backup-encoder failover separately from sermon-video switching. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. That is a planned failover test, not a method for changing videos during worship.
When the service is finished, use YouTube’s normal ending procedure: end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot a transition that does not look or sound right
- The old video remains on screen: Confirm the intended scene or media source became active, then check that the correct file is selected.
- The new clip starts in the wrong place: Review the Media Source playback settings, including restart on activation, and rehearse the expected behavior.
- There is no sound or the wrong sound: Check the selected clip’s audio in OBS and monitor the outgoing audio as well as the preview before the service.
- The YouTube preview is not receiving the feed: Check that OBS is still sending to the intended event and that its server URL and stream key match the event. If a stream key was reset, update OBS with the new key.
- The event ends unexpectedly: Check whether the encoder was stopped or the event was ended in Live Control Room. Changing sermon content should be an OBS output change, not an event-ending step.
