You can run a continuous study stream by using OBS Studio on an Ubuntu computer as the encoder and sending its output to YouTube Live. First confirm live-stream access, install OBS, build a simple scene, configure an encoder and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain, then test the complete loop before leaving it live. “24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee: a local computer, network, power supply, OBS, or YouTube can fail.

What you need before you start

  • An Ubuntu computer capable of encoding your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland for Linux/Unix, but meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee the computer can stream well. CPU and GPU load vary with the encoder, output settings, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements (page dated 2021-08-25).
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-stream policies and Community Guidelines apply to the broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
  • A dependable upload connection, access to the stream configuration in YouTube Studio, and content you have the rights to show and play.

For a long broadcast, wired networking, suitable cooling, and reliable power may reduce some local risks. They cannot prevent an ISP, platform, software, or hardware outage. A UPS can help with some brief local power interruptions, but it does not protect the internet connection or YouTube service.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

OBS’s Linux installation instructions say Ubuntu 18.04 or newer can use the OBS Studio PPA and apt package. These instructions were published on 2021-08-26; check the official Linux installation page for current package guidance before installing.

  1. Open a terminal and add the OBS Studio PPA:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
  2. Install OBS Studio:
    sudo apt install obs-studio
  3. Launch OBS and complete its initial setup. Review the selected output resolution and encoder rather than assuming the automatic choices can run continuously on your hardware.

Build a study-stream scene

In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add only the sources you need. A static study visual, a clock or session indicator, and modest ambient audio can make a clear, low-complexity layout. These are design choices, not requirements imposed by OBS or YouTube. Keep the scene simple enough that your actual computer can encode it without sustained overload.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use only visuals and audio you are entitled to broadcast. A looping track or background video is not automatically safe to use just because it appears in a study stream. YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service apply to live content; rights and copyright issues can also affect a stream or channel.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast using the current options shown for your channel.
  2. Open the broadcast’s stream configuration and use the connection details YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP transported over SSL; the ingest connection requires a valid protocol, server, path, and port. Use the details supplied for your broadcast rather than copying a server address or path from an unrelated example. See YouTube encoder settings and Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the service and connection method supported by the current YouTube configuration, and enter the provided stream details. If OBS asks for a stream key, copy it from YouTube Studio into OBS without sharing it publicly.
  4. Start a test broadcast and confirm that YouTube receives the video and audio before you begin the intended long-running stream.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public configuration examples, or messages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings

There is no single best preset for every study stream. Higher resolution and frame rate can require more upload bandwidth and encoding capacity; a mostly static scene may not benefit enough to justify the extra load. Start with an output your computer and connection can sustain, then test it with the real scene and audio.

Setting Practical choice YouTube guidance
Bitrate control Use constant bitrate (CBR) where available. YouTube recommends CBR.
Keyframe interval Set 2 seconds where OBS exposes the control. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 Consider this only if your encoding load and measured upload capacity support it. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends 10 Mbps for this combination.
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 Use only if the additional motion detail is useful and your system and connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends 12 Mbps for this combination.
Codec and protocol Choose an encoder and protocol supported by OBS and the current YouTube stream configuration; prefer RTMPS. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options in its encoder guidance. Actual availability depends on the encoder and setup.

The two bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for specific H.264 resolution and frame-rate combinations, not guarantees or universal defaults. YouTube’s guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table. Run an upload speed test and leave capacity for connection variation and other network use instead of selecting a bitrate that consumes all measured upload bandwidth.

Test the stream before leaving it live

  1. Use the exact scene, resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, and audio intended for the broadcast.
  2. Include movement and audio similar to what viewers will hear and see. YouTube specifically recommends testing with comparable audio and motion.
  3. Watch the YouTube stream preview and stream-health messages. Check for dropped frames, unstable connection indications, missing audio, or visible encoding problems.
  4. Let the scene run through its loop point and any transitions. Confirm that audio does not stop, overlap, or restart unexpectedly and that the loop behaves as intended.
  5. If problems appear, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or choose a less demanding encoder setting, then test again.

During the live broadcast, keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and messages. A successful short test does not prove that a computer, network, or platform will remain available indefinitely.

Plan for interruptions in a 24/7 broadcast

The official OBS and YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation from a particular Ubuntu-and-OBS configuration or provide an end-to-end automatic recovery recipe. A single OBS setting or stream key cannot guarantee continuous transmission.

  • Host failure: A crash, update, overheating, or encoder overload can stop OBS. Keep the scene and workload modest, monitor the machine, and decide how you will restart OBS if it exits.
  • Power or network loss: Stable wired networking and suitable power arrangements can reduce some local risks, but cannot prevent outages outside your setup. An optional UPS addresses only some short power interruptions.
  • YouTube disconnect: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the broadcast state, then follow the recovery steps you have tested. Do not assume OBS or YouTube will restore every interruption automatically.
  • Recovery planning: If you use automatic restarts or remote monitoring, test them deliberately and understand what they do—and do not—recover. A restarted encoder may still need a working network and valid YouTube stream configuration.

Describe your stream as continuous only to the extent your actual setup supports; safeguards reduce particular risks but cannot eliminate platform, ISP, power, software, or hardware failures.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive a signal Incorrect or outdated connection details, an exposed or replaced stream key, or a mismatched connection method. Compare OBS’s stream configuration with the current details in YouTube Studio. Replace a disclosed key and update OBS.
Unstable connection or dropped frames Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or another network activity is competing with the stream. Run an upload speed test, reduce bitrate or output demands, and retest while other household traffic is considered.
Encoding overload or choppy video The computer cannot sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity. Simplify the scene or lower resolution or frame rate; test a different available encoder if appropriate for the hardware.
Audio is missing or behaves badly at the loop point Audio source, scene routing, or loop behavior differs from what was tested. Check OBS audio sources and monitor the full loop with representative audio before resuming.
Broadcast stops after a local outage OBS, the host, the internet connection, or YouTube disconnected. Check the host and network, inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages, and restart or reconnect using the recovery procedure you tested.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only.
