If a firewall is interrupting your YouTube encoder’s ordinary RTMP connection, switch the encoder to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and ask the network administrator to allow the encoder’s outbound TCP connection on port 443 to that specific ingestion host. RTMPS wraps RTMP in SSL/TLS. Use the endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room; do not guess a server address or try inbound port forwarding as a fix for an encoder-initiated stream.
Why a firewall can disconnect a YouTube stream
An encoder sends video over a connection to YouTube’s ingestion server. A firewall, proxy, secure-web gateway, VPN, or endpoint security product may block or interrupt that connection. Ordinary RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable: YouTube’s RTMPS connection uses TLS and TCP port 443, and the server hostname is needed for SNI authentication. The encoder must support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the protocol and connection requirements.
For a stream started by an encoder inside your network, the requested firewall change is an outbound allow rule. OBS community troubleshooting guidance says port forwarding is not required for outbound streaming; your administrator’s policy and YouTube’s current endpoint information take precedence. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide describes this distinction.
Switch the encoder to YouTube RTMPS
- Get the current endpoint. Open YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream’s connection settings. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL rather than assuming the interface’s default RTMP address is suitable. YouTube documents how to select and use RTMPS in its Live Control Room streaming instructions.
- Update the encoder fields. Set the server or URL to the copied address and enter the current stream key in the key field. Confirm the URL begins with
rtmps://and retains the supplied hostname and path. Some encoders require an explicit port; use TCP 443 if prompted or if the URL does not already specify it. - Confirm RTMPS and TLS support. Check the encoder’s protocol options and documentation. A cleartext RTMP connection sent to an RTMPS endpoint can time out; an SSL error can indicate a wrong scheme, port, TLS configuration, certificate handling, or missing/incorrect SNI hostname.
- Save and test before the event. Start a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate, then review the encoder log and YouTube stream health. Record the time and exact error if it fails again.
Ask the administrator for a targeted outbound rule
Give the network administrator the encoder device, the exact YouTube ingestion hostname copied from Live Control Room, the disconnect time, and the encoder’s error or log excerpt. Ask them to check firewall, proxy, and secure-web-gateway logs for that outbound connection. If policy permits, allow the encoder’s outbound TCP connection to that current host on port 443.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume traffic is allowed simply because it uses the usual HTTPS port: local controls can still block or inspect it, or permit only selected destinations. Avoid asking for a broad, permanent firewall bypass when a host-specific rule may address the problem. If the network is managed, only its administrator can authorize a change.
Diagnose the symptom before changing more settings
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| SSL certificate or handshake error | Verify the rtmps:// scheme, current server and path, port 443 where required, TLS setup, certificate handling, and SNI hostname. |
| Connection timeout before the stream starts | Check that the encoder is not sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint, confirm the URL and port, and verify RTMPS support. Then have the administrator inspect egress policy and connection logs. |
| Stream starts but drops frames or disconnects | Investigate intermittent packet loss, firewall or security inspection, VPN behavior, upload capacity, Wi-Fi or local-link stability, and shared bandwidth. Dropped frames do not by themselves prove the encoder software is at fault. |
YouTube recommends upload capacity with about 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. Count both primary and backup streams if using dual ingestion; shared office bandwidth can also reduce what is available to one encoder. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and network guidance for the settings relevant to your resolution and frame rate. There is no universal bitrate change that fixes a firewall rule.

Separate a firewall problem from other network causes
- Check the encoder and YouTube stream-health logs at the failure time, and note whether the error is a timeout, TLS failure, or loss after streaming has begun.
- Ask the administrator whether firewall, proxy, VPN, or endpoint-security logs show a blocked or terminated connection to the ingestion hostname.
- If permitted, make a controlled test on another network. If one managed network fails and another works, that narrows the investigation but does not by itself identify which device or policy caused the failure.
- Review available upload capacity and connection stability. YouTube’s guidance recommends headroom, while OBS notes that dropped frames can reflect an unstable connection or insufficient capacity.
- Keep security software enabled as the normal state. If an authorized, time-limited comparison is needed, coordinate it with the administrator and restore protection immediately afterward.
YouTube notes that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A successful test before the event and a timestamped record of any later failure give the administrator something specific to investigate.
Would HLS or DASH avoid the problem?
YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingestion, but these are alternatives to evaluate—not firewall workarounds. Compare encoder support, latency, codecs and stream requirements, and what the network administrator will permit. Switching protocols is not documented as a way to evade a firewall that blocks or terminates the selected traffic. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison before changing a production setup.
