How to Create a 24/7 Recorded Piano Lesson Stream on YouTube

Use OBS Media Source to loop one piano lesson, or a VLC playlist to rotate several lessons on YouTube Live. Here are the setup steps, rights checks, monitoring tips, and archive limits.

To run a prerecorded piano lesson as a continuous YouTube Live stream, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send its stream URL and key from OBS Studio, and enable Loop on the lesson video’s Media Source. A playlist of lessons can loop through OBS’s VLC Video source. Test the full setup before relying on it: looping repeats the video, but does not guarantee an unattended stream will stay connected for 24 hours.

Before you set up the stream

Confirm YouTube livestream access

Your channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable access and prepare your stream ahead of its intended start. See YouTube’s livestreaming requirements and its encoder setup guide.

Check rights for everything viewers will hear or see

Make sure you have the necessary rights for the lesson video, piano performance, sheet music shown onscreen, backing tracks, and any other included material. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights.

YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent a match from disrupting the stream. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

How to loop a piano lesson in OBS and send it to YouTube

  1. Prepare the lesson file. Keep the video accessible on the computer that will run OBS. OBS Media Source documentation lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. If you are using a different format, confirm OBS can play it before scheduling the broadcast. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
  2. Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select one you have already set up. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. The key is a credential: do not share it or show it on stream. If it is compromised, reset it through Live Control Room. YouTube explains stream settings in its live stream settings guide.
  4. Add the lesson as a Media Source. In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the lesson video file. Enable Loop so OBS starts the file again when playback ends. Check the scene’s framing and audio before going live.
  5. For multiple lessons, use a playlist. Add a VLC Video source and choose the lesson files in the order you want them to play. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source type to appear.
  6. Set encoding and test the feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, supports H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio in its listed settings, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate for your production and actual upload connection; there is no single suitable value for every setup. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and test before the public broadcast.
  7. Start and monitor. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public or announcing it. Confirm the watch page is accessible on your channel and on mobile. During the broadcast, check stream health messages, confirm the lesson is advancing, and listen for audible, undistorted piano audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its livestream tips and encoder guidance cover these checks.

One lesson file or a playlist?

Setup Best fit What to configure
One lesson A single continuous lesson that should repeat from the beginning OBS Media Source with Loop enabled
Several lessons A sequence of different lessons that should play and repeat in order OBS VLC Video source with the files in a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled; VLC must be installed

Both approaches replay prerecorded material. Neither one prevents a computer, OBS, network connection, or YouTube ingest connection from failing.

Plan for connection failures and the archive

A loop is not the same as unattended reliability

The loop control handles the end of a file; it does not restart a crashed encoder or repair a dropped internet connection. Test the whole path—including video playback, piano audio, OBS connection, YouTube preview, and public watch page—before leaving the stream unattended. For a long broadcast, check stream health and messages periodically rather than assuming that the repeated video means the live feed is still healthy.

Do not count on a full archive of a 24-hour stream

YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours or more. If viewers need a complete replay, plan a shorter archive segment or make a separate recording rather than relying on a single 24-hour broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • Live streaming is unavailable: Check that the channel is verified and has no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If you have only just enabled livestreaming, allow up to 24 hours for first-time access.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that the stream URL and key in OBS match the selected stream in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS with the replacement.
  • The lesson plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a VLC playlist, enable Loop Playlist instead.
  • The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then check the source list again in OBS.
  • The preview has no sound or distorted piano audio: Check the source’s audio output and levels in OBS, then make a representative test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; do not assume the public stream sounds like local playback.
  • The livestream is interrupted despite having a music license: Check for a Content ID match and contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel. YouTube notes that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
  • You cannot find the complete replay: A stream that runs for 24 hours or longer is not guaranteed to have a complete YouTube archive. Use a shorter archive segment or separate recording if a full replay matters.

For a YouTube-only cloud option, StreamNeo keeps a prerecorded video or playlist live without leaving your computer or home connection running. Upload the lesson, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays the uploaded video; it does not broadcast a camera.
