For a mostly static lecture, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a sustained upload bitrate your connection can actually maintain. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for H.264 1080p30; the recommendation is not a guarantee of stability. A single 24/7 broadcast also cannot be relied on for a YouTube archive: streams over 12 hours may not be captured.
Recommended OBS settings for a 24/7 1080p lecture stream
Use this as a starting configuration, then test it on the computer and internet connection that will run the broadcast. The exact encoder preset, sustainable bitrate, and recovery behavior depend on your hardware and network.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080, 30 fps | Suitable baseline for a largely static lecture; 60 fps can be more demanding on the system. |
| Encoder | H.264 | A broadly compatible choice for YouTube ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | Matches YouTube’s live encoder guidance. |
| Video bitrate | Choose a sustained rate the upload connection can support; YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 1080p30. | The 14 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a promise that the connection or viewers’ playback will be stable. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Advanced video | Progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR; YouTube’s recommended parameters include two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. | Sets a conventional SDR signal format and encoder parameters. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps | These are YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS audio settings for stereo. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS where supported | Use the secure ingest option when available. |
These encoder and audio values reflect YouTube’s live encoder guidance accessed October 3, 2026; the reviewed encoder page did not show a publication date. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different devices and connection qualities, but that does not remove the need for a stable source stream.
Set up OBS and YouTube for a stable lecture feed
- Match the video layout. In OBS, set the canvas to match your source and layout. Set the output resolution to 1920×1080; if the canvas differs, scale to 1080p. Set the frame rate to 30 fps. For slides, a presenter, or other low-motion lecture content, 30 fps is a sensible baseline.
- Configure the video encoder. In OBS output settings, select H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended values for H.264 1080p30 as guidance, but choose a bitrate your upload can sustain continuously. Do not treat the recommended figure as a substitute for testing.
- Set the signal format. For SDR, use progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit. YouTube’s recommended advanced parameters include two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Configure lecture audio. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, with stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as YouTube’s listed stereo guidance. Check that speech remains present and intelligible through the whole program; the right microphone gain and filters depend on the equipment and room.
- Connect the correct YouTube stream key. In YouTube’s live control workflow, copy the stream key for the intended broadcast and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that broadcast. Confirm the selected YouTube event and stream key before starting.
- Test the complete path. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, and check the incoming preview, audio, and YouTube stream health/messages before relying on the configuration. Test representative slides, motion, and speech rather than only a static screen.
- Save the tested configuration. OBS profiles can save and switch sets of stream and output settings. Keep a known-good profile for this YouTube setup separate from profiles used for other destinations or formats.
Choose an encoder your computer can run continuously
OBS says hardware encoding can offload work from the CPU and is generally recommended for performance when supported. However, older-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. There is no universally best encoder or preset without knowing the computer’s hardware and testing it under sustained load.

- Use a supported encoder that remains stable during a long test, rather than choosing solely by its name or maximum quality setting.
- Watch OBS’s rendering and encoding status as well as YouTube’s stream-health messages. A clean local preview alone does not establish that the upload path is healthy.
- If the machine struggles, compare a less demanding supported encoder or settings against the current profile, then repeat the sustained test. Avoid changing several variables at once so you can identify what improved or worsened stability.
Can YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve one continuous 24/7 broadcast as a complete archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the YouTube archive matters, divide programming into events shorter than 12 hours; keep a separate local recording as an independent copy.
OBS recommends recording to MKV because an ungraceful stop does not corrupt the entire file. Plan for the additional storage and for the computer to remain available while recording. A local recording is not a substitute for verifying that the file is being written and that there is enough disk space.

Keep the broadcast running through interruptions
Enable OBS automatic reconnect and test recovery by simulating a network interruption before depending on the stream. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and reviewing stream health and messages. The official guidance reviewed does not specify universal reconnect retry values for a 24/7 production, so validate behavior on your own setup rather than assuming a particular retry interval will suit it.
- Test a short network drop and confirm OBS reconnects and YouTube resumes receiving the feed.
- Check both the encoder status in OBS and stream health in YouTube after recovery.
- For uninterrupted programming, consider what happens if the computer, power, or home internet fails; reconnect settings only address some interruptions and do not make a single computer or connection fail-proof.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and home connection on around the clock is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health | The sustained upload path may not support the selected bitrate, or the stream may be interrupted. | Test the connection during a representative broadcast, lower the bitrate to a level it can sustain, and review OBS and YouTube health messages. |
| OBS struggles while encoding | The chosen encoder or settings may exceed what the computer can sustain. | Try a supported hardware encoder to offload CPU work, bearing in mind older generations may reduce quality at the same bitrate; test a different stable configuration. |
| Viewers hear no lecture audio | Audio source selection, levels, or the audio path may be wrong. | Test speech end to end before the broadcast and verify the configured audio format against YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance. |
| OBS disconnects and does not resume cleanly | Reconnect behavior, internet recovery, or the YouTube ingest connection may be involved. | Enable automatic reconnect, reproduce a brief interruption in a test, then verify OBS reconnects and YouTube receives the stream again. |
| No complete YouTube archive appears | A single event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | For future archives, split the broadcast into events shorter than 12 hours and record locally in MKV as a separate copy. |
