Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Compare YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors with the encoder and system logs, then check both disk blocks and inodes before removing files. Once the service can write normally again, reconnect it and confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
First, establish what stopped and when
Write down the time the stream stopped, including its timezone. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream’s status and health information. Note whether YouTube says the broadcast ended, the encoder disconnected, or it is still receiving a feed, and record any error timestamp. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance explains where to find these messages.
Then compare that timeline with the streaming application’s logs and the Linux system journal. Look for failed writes, a process exit or restart, and network-disconnect messages. A full filesystem can prevent applications from writing data, but it does not by itself establish why YouTube stopped receiving the stream. If OBS is your encoder, its connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of an unstable connection between the computer and remote ingest server—a separate possibility to check against YouTube’s timestamps.
Check filesystem capacity and inodes
Run these commands on the Linux host:
df -h
df -i
df -h shows filesystem capacity and available space in human-readable units. df -i reports inode use: inodes are the filesystem’s capacity for tracking individual files. A filesystem can run out of inodes even when it appears to have free space for file contents. The GNU df documentation describes both reports.

Check the filesystem that holds each relevant path, not just the root mount (/): streaming-service logs, media, cache, temporary files, and service data may be on different mounts. If either blocks or inodes are exhausted, identify the affected filesystem before deciding what to remove or expand.
Find what is consuming the space
Use a shallow directory scan on the full filesystem to locate large areas. For example, if the affected mount is /var:

sudo du -xhd1 /var
Adjust the path and flags for your system’s du implementation. The -x option keeps the scan on the same filesystem; the depth limit makes the initial results easier to inspect. Follow up inside the directory that accounts for the usage. The GNU du manual describes how it estimates disk use by traversing directory trees. Treat the result as a locator, not a perfect reconciliation with df: the two tools can report different totals.
Inspect large files and directories before deleting anything. Determine whether they are active media, application data, temporary files, or retained logs. Removing an active file or useful diagnostic evidence can cause additional problems without addressing the source of growth.

Inspect logs and the system journal before cleanup
Review the streaming service’s own logs and, if applicable, the OBS log for the incident window. Check the system journal as well:
journalctl --disk-usage
This reports how much disk space the journal uses. Journald data may be persistent under /var/log/journal or volatile under /run/log/journal, depending on the host’s configuration; see the systemd-journald manual. The journalctl manual documents journal rotation and vacuum controls. Vacuum operations remove archived journal files, so retain the entries you need to diagnose the incident before using them. Limits and retention behavior are also governed by journald configuration.

Journal cleanup can make room, but it does not stop a service from producing logs continuously. Identify the process or service generating the growth. Configure an appropriate retention policy and log rotation for that service; logrotate supports time- or size-based rotation, compression, and removal according to its configuration.
Recover the stream after restoring write capacity
- Make enough safe space available. Resolve the confirmed source—such as exhausted blocks, exhausted inodes, or oversized retained logs—without deleting files whose purpose you have not identified. If capacity must be expanded, confirm how the filesystem and server are provisioned before changing them.
- Check the streaming service. Use the status and recovery procedure appropriate to the actual encoder and server setup. There is no single restart command that applies to every Linux streaming stack.
- Reconnect or restart only as needed. Once the service can write normally, follow its documented procedure to reconnect to YouTube or restart the process if it has stopped.
- Verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and inspect stream health for new errors. YouTube’s live metrics guidance describes available metrics. A process running on the server is not, by itself, proof that the broadcast is healthy.
Understand discrepancies and other possible causes
df reports filesystem-wide capacity; du estimates usage from directory entries it can traverse. Differences between the totals can have several explanations, including open-but-deleted files, mount boundaries, permissions, reserved filesystem space, or filesystem-specific behavior. These are diagnostic possibilities, not facts established about your incident.

Likewise, a disk-full alert and a stopped stream occurring together do not prove that disk exhaustion was the sole cause. Match the server’s evidence to YouTube’s timestamped health messages. If OBS is in use, compare its logs and connection symptoms too; OBS-specific guidance does not automatically apply to other encoders.
Prevent another interruption
- Set rotation and retention for the source of growth. Configure the responsible service’s logs to rotate by time or size, and define suitable compression and retention. Removing old journal entries alone will not contain another service’s unbounded log growth.
- Monitor both resource limits. Watch filesystem free space and inode availability on the mounts used for logs, media, cache, temporary files, and service data.
- Review growth before it becomes urgent. Periodically inspect the directories identified by your usage scans and confirm that log rotation and retention are operating as intended.
- Choose a remedy that matches the confirmed cause. More capacity may help if blocks are the constraint and the server supports expansion. It will not necessarily fix inode exhaustion, runaway logs, or a separate connection failure.
