How to Add a Now-Playing Title to a Continuous Relaxation Stream on YouTube

A now-playing track label must be part of the video scene sent to YouTube. Set up an overlay with a compatible title source, test it through playback changes, and confirm your music is cleared for livestreaming.

To show the current track during a continuous YouTube relaxation stream, add a title overlay to the video scene your encoder sends to YouTube. The overlay needs a title source that follows the audio—such as compatible live player metadata or a supported track list. YouTube’s broadcast title is separate: changing it does not create a changing label inside the video.

What you need for an accurate now-playing label

The label works only when its source stays in step with the music. The setup has four parts:

  1. Music playback: The player or playlist producing the stream’s audio.
  2. Title source: Live metadata from a compatible player, or a title sequence the overlay can read. Do not assume every player exposes compatible metadata.
  3. Overlay: A text or graphic element added to the video scene. One community option is the OBS “Music on stream” browser-source overlay. Its resource listing describes support for YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Deezer, Pretzel, and Epidemic Sound, as well as YouTube chapters and video-description playlists as title inputs. These are features claimed by that listing, not a guarantee that every integration works with every configuration today.
  4. Encoder output: The software or hardware that sends the composed video and audio to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes encoder use for sharing a screen or gameplay, using external audio and video hardware, and managing a more advanced production.

How to add the title in OBS or another encoder

  1. Set up the YouTube live event. Create or open the event and connect your encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and key workflow. The event’s title describes the broadcast; it is not the track label.
  2. Add the overlay to the broadcast scene. In OBS, add the supported overlay as a browser source, or use the equivalent overlay source in your encoder. Set its dimensions and position for the video canvas, and ensure it is in the scene actually used for the broadcast.
  3. Connect a title source that matches playback. Configure the overlay to read metadata from the music player it supports, or select a supported chapter or description playlist. A manually maintained title list can fall out of sync if the music is shuffled, skipped, or interrupted; verify what happens in those cases before relying on it.
  4. Check the outgoing picture. Preview the complete scene and confirm the label is readable over the relaxation visuals, appears in the intended position, and does not obscure important content. Check the encoder’s outgoing video rather than assuming a local player preview proves that YouTube receives the right scene.
  5. Test transitions and interruptions. Pause, skip, reconnect, and try a long track title. Confirm the label changes to the correct track and recovers as expected before leaving the stream unattended. These are practical checks, not a guarantee of unattended reliability.

Keep the broadcast title separate from the track label

YouTube’s live event has broadcast metadata, including a title. A now-playing label is a visual element composed into the outgoing video. Editing the event title will not make it update as tracks change; the overlay must be part of the encoder scene.

Make sure the music is cleared for livestreaming

An on-screen title or attribution is not permission to use a recording. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match that remains can lead to interruption or termination. If you have a license, check that it covers livestreaming on YouTube and the relevant territories and archives. YouTube also advises that a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Choose a title source that survives real playback

Before settling on an overlay, check whether it supports your exact player, where it gets titles (live metadata, chapters, a description playlist, or manual updates), and how it behaves after skips, shuffle, pauses, and reconnects. Also check that it can be added to the encoder’s active scene and styled legibly against your visuals. Test the full playback path—not just whether a title appears once.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the relaxation video to keep playing without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For a now-playing label, the title still needs to be built into the uploaded video or handled by a compatible live title source; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not go live from a camera.
