Use YAML as the schedule your own controller reads—not as a file YouTube can execute. A controller can parse time blocks, then tell OBS or another playout application which scene or media source to send to each channel. YouTube receives the resulting live audio and video; it does not use the YAML to switch content.
What the schedule controls—and what it does not
A YouTube live broadcast and its incoming video feed are separate resources. A liveBroadcast represents the watchable event, while a liveStream represents the audio/video feed sent to YouTube. The Live Streaming API can manage broadcast events and their lifecycle, but scheduling a broadcast is not the same as scheduling which media an encoder plays. Google documents the Live Streaming API resources and workflow.
A YouTube playlist is a collection of YouTube videos. Creating or editing that playlist does not make it the source that an encoder sends to a live event. For a live feed assembled from prerecorded material, the playout application must select and play the files; the schedule controller must cause that selection at the right time. YouTube’s playlist API documentation describes playlist resource operations, not live-feed playout.
The practical design is therefore: YAML holds the intended schedule; a controller validates and interprets it; OBS or another playout system changes scenes or media sources; and each properly configured YouTube destination receives its own output.

Design a schedule that can be operated safely
Choose explicit fields
Include a stable identifier for each output, a time zone, a start and end time or clearly defined recurrence, the scene or playlist to select, and a fallback action. Give every time an unambiguous zone—such as an IANA time-zone name—and use the same conversion rules throughout the controller. These are design recommendations, not YouTube API requirements.

Validate before starting
- Reject an unknown output or scene instead of silently selecting a different one.
- Check that referenced media exists and is readable before the schedule begins.
- Detect overlapping blocks when overlaps are not allowed, and identify gaps that lack an intentional fallback.
- Reject invalid time zones and ambiguous timestamps.
- Log the parsed schedule and the next planned transition so an operator can check the expected state.
Connect YAML to OBS or another playout system
YAML is the controller’s input, not a native YouTube scheduling format. The controller must parse the file and translate each schedule entry into a playout action. OBS automation is one possible building block: the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin supports date/time and media conditions, scene-switch actions, and a Macro Schedule tab for actions at a specified date and time. Its OBS Project Forums listing reports a minimum OBS version of 31.1.1 and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; the listing was last updated 2026-08-07. The documented plugin capabilities do not establish native YAML ingestion. Unless you verify a separate integration that reads your file, you need custom code or a service to validate the YAML and trigger the relevant OBS actions. Treat the plugin as an automation interface, not as proof that a complete multi-channel YAML scheduler is built in.

Implementation sequence
- Organize the playout. Create a scene or source configuration for each content block, and verify that each scene plays the intended media.
- Build the controller. Parse and validate the schedule, resolve each output and scene, calculate the next transition in the declared time zone, and trigger the corresponding playout action at that time.
- Configure each YouTube destination. Authorize API requests with the account that owns the channel. Create or associate the broadcast event and incoming stream for the correct channel, following Google’s documented workflow. Google’s common multi-channel pattern calls for a different stream for each channel; do not assume one stream resource serves all channels. - Test transitions and failure cases. Confirm the selected scene and outgoing feed for each destination, and check controller logs before relying on the schedule.
Run each channel as a separate destination
Each channel needs its own correct authorization and stream setup. The API request must be authorized by an account that owns the channel, and the channel-specific broadcast and stream must be associated according to the API workflow. A schedule can coordinate these outputs, but it does not merge their credentials or make one channel’s stream automatically serve another. Google’s LiveStreams resource documentation.
Keep output identifiers in the schedule separate from credentials. Store credentials in an appropriately protected configuration or secret store rather than putting stream keys directly into a shared YAML file. That is an operational security recommendation; the cited API documentation does not prescribe a particular secret-management system.

Plan for missed transitions and interruptions
A schedule is only dependable if its failure behavior is deliberate. Decide what should happen when the controller misses a trigger, OBS restarts, a media file disappears, authorization expires, or the network connection drops. Log each attempted transition and its outcome, and make the next scheduled state recoverable after a restart. Monitor each outgoing feed independently; the sources do not establish a guaranteed number of simultaneous outputs, gapless switching, automatic recovery, or a particular computer’s capacity.
- Missed trigger: On startup, compare the current time with the schedule and choose an explicit catch-up rule rather than assuming the previous action ran.
- OBS or controller restart: Re-read and validate the schedule, identify the currently intended block, and verify the active scene before continuing.
- Missing media: Fail validation or select the declared fallback; log the missing path for correction.
- Expired authorization or interrupted network: Check the affected channel’s API/output state and credentials, then restore the feed deliberately. Do not assume that a scheduled broadcast event repairs an interrupted encoder feed.
Keep YouTube content and channel rules in view
Playlist automation does not grant rights to the videos or music being played. Use content you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling a recurring feed. A technically valid schedule cannot make unauthorized content permissible. The API references above explain resource behavior; they are not a complete statement of YouTube’s current content-policy requirements.
