First check whether the black screen is in OBS’s preview/program output or only on the platform receiving the stream. If OBS itself is black, verify that the scene contains the right visible source and that it targets the intended file, display, window, or application; then follow the checks for your operating system. A correct OBS preview and a black remote stream are separate symptoms, and the available OBS guidance here does not establish a platform-delivery fix.
Start by locating where the picture disappears
- Look at the OBS preview or program output. If it is black there, troubleshoot the scene and its source.
- If the OBS preview is correct but viewers see black, the capture checks below do not establish the cause. Treat it as a separate streaming-platform or delivery problem rather than changing scene-capture settings without evidence.
Identify what the nature ambience scene is meant to show: a media file or looped clip, a live camera or capture input, a display, a window, or an application. Display Capture is only one possible source type; it is not automatically the right choice for footage or a camera.
Check the scene and its source
- In the affected OBS scene, find the intended video source in the Sources list. Confirm it is present and visible; a hidden source or a scene without the intended source cannot show the expected picture.
- Open the source’s properties. If it captures a display, window, or application, select the intended target rather than assuming OBS has chosen the right one.
- Match the source type and instructions to your operating system and version. OBS lists different capture options for Windows, macOS, and Linux; steps for one platform may not apply to another. See the OBS Project’s Sources Guide and Display Capture documentation.
Use the right capture-source branch for your system
Windows
OBS supports Display Capture on Windows. If a Windows laptop with hybrid graphics shows a black display capture, OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide describes a capture-method issue involving OBS and the display running on different GPUs. The guide, published in 2021, says the newer method is available with OBS 27 or later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later. Check your installed versions and current settings before relying on those labels, since the page is older and settings may change.
- Try the automatic capture method first.
- If that does not work, the guide recommends manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method.
- If you previously changed OBS to use a power-saving GPU, the guide recommends returning OBS to the default high-power GPU setting.
These are OBS’s documented checks for the laptop display-capture case, not a universal fix for every black video source.

macOS
Choose the capture source that matches your macOS version. The older Display Capture source is listed for macOS 10.15 through 12.6 and marked deprecated from macOS 13 onward. Confirm both the source type and selected target in OBS’s Display Capture documentation and macOS Screen Capture documentation.
Linux
OBS documents XSHM and PipeWire capture methods for Linux, with PipeWire requiring Wayland. Use the source compatible with your session and follow OBS’s Display Capture documentation; do not apply Windows or macOS instructions to a Linux setup.

Distinguish a black screen from OBS feedback
If you see an endless tunnel of repeated OBS windows rather than a black image, that is the Video Feedback Effect. OBS says it occurs when OBS captures the display on which OBS itself is visible. Minimizing OBS can stop the feedback. OBS also documents ways to hide its window from capture on Windows and macOS 13 or later; on macOS, this requires a macOS Screen Capture source in Display Capture mode. See the OBS Video Feedback documentation.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview is black for a clip or loop | Whether the intended media source is present and visible in the scene | Check the source and its properties; display-capture instructions may not apply to a media file. |
| OBS preview is black for a display, window, or application | Capture source availability for your OS/version and the selected target | Use the matching Windows, macOS, or Linux branch above. |
| Black display capture on a Windows laptop | OBS and Windows versions, capture method, and GPU configuration | Follow the documented laptop checks, verifying current labels and versions. |
| Repeated OBS windows appear recursively | Whether OBS is capturing the display where its own window is visible | Minimize OBS or use the documented hide-from-capture option for your platform. |
| OBS preview is correct, but the platform stream is black | The symptom is outside the scene-capture problem addressed here | Seek platform-specific guidance; the cited OBS capture material does not establish an encoder, bitrate, ingest, or account remedy. |
