There is no single Castr switch that restarts every ended YouTube live event. Choose the setting that matches what you mean: YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop let an encoder start and stop a broadcast; Castr’s Backup can take over when a primary input fails; and Castr’s Infinite Loop repeats prerecorded video 24/7.
Choose the behavior you need
| What should happen? | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| An encoder starts or stops a YouTube broadcast | YouTube Auto-start and Auto-stop | Allows the encoder to initiate or stop streaming; these are YouTube settings, not a Castr restart control. YouTube Help |
| The live input drops and another source should take over | Castr Backup | Uses a second encoder or a backup VOD when the primary input fails. Castr Help Center |
| Prerecorded video should repeat continuously | Castr Infinite Loop | Plays uploaded video continuously as a 24/7 stream. Castr Help Center |
| A separate broadcast should begin at a chosen time | Castr Schedule Date Time | Schedules a start; the scheduler uses your device’s time zone. Castr Help Center |
Set up encoder-driven YouTube Auto-start and Auto-stop
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. Find its stream settings. YouTube’s current interface labels may change, so confirm the controls in the stream settings for the broadcast you intend to use.
- Enable Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube documents that these options allow the encoder to start or stop the stream. They do not make a disconnected encoder reconnect or replay an ended event. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Connect the YouTube destination in Castr. Use the account/API connection, or configure the YouTube server and stream key. Castr notes that a stream-key connection may require editing stream description details in YouTube’s dashboard. Keep the server URL and key private. Castr Help Center
- Test before going public. Turn destinations off while checking the source in Castr preview, then test the YouTube destination as an Unlisted or Private stream. Monitor Analytics > Input Health during the test. Castr Help Center
Use Castr Backup for a failed primary input
Backup addresses input continuity, not the automatic restart of a finished YouTube event. Castr’s help article says to use the Backup tab to keep a stream running if the primary encoder fails. The documentation reviewed does not state which plans include Backup, so check availability in your account before relying on it. Castr Help Center
- Disable the stream before changing Backup. Castr says Backup cannot be toggled while the stream is live or when it has a Linked source.
- Open the Backup tab and enable Backup. Choose the failover mode that matches your standby source.
- Configure the backup input. Encoder Level requires a second encoder pointed at the backup ingest URL. File Level plays a backup VOD when the live input drops.
- Update and test your connection details. Enabling Backup changes the stream keys. Make sure the relevant encoder uses the updated details and test the failover before depending on it for a public broadcast.
Loop prerecorded video or schedule a start
For continuous playback
Enable Castr’s Infinite Loop mode for uploaded video. Castr says playback goes live immediately when enabled and streams 24×7. This is for prerecorded content, not a camera feed or a command to restart a previous encoder event. Castr Help Center
For a selected start time
Use Schedule Date Time when you want a single scheduled start rather than continuous repetition. The scheduler follows the time zone set on your device, so verify that zone before saving the schedule. Castr Help Center

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Run separate broadcasts with the encoder offline between them
If you are ending one broadcast and later starting another, Castr recommends switching destinations off while the source is offline, then enabling them again when the encoder source is live. This is a manual destination workflow; Castr’s guide does not describe it as an automatic event restart. Castr Help Center
Troubleshoot connection and restart problems
- YouTube does not connect: Castr’s troubleshooting guide recommends deleting and re-adding the destination. Castr Help Center
- The stream key fails: Generate a new key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the Castr connection. Keep the replacement key private. Castr Help Center
- The source drops but the stream should continue: Check that Backup was enabled while the stream was disabled, that the selected backup source is configured, and that the encoder or VOD is available. Remember that activating Backup changes stream keys.
- You expected a finished event to restart by itself: Auto-start/Auto-stop govern encoder start and stop, Backup covers a failed input, and Infinite Loop repeats uploaded video. Select the control for the actual trigger; none is a universal restart switch.
