For a reliable workflow, prepare each broadcast in YouTube Studio (or manage it through the YouTube Live Streaming API), then have cron start an encoder with the correct stream URL, stream key and playlist. First clarify what “playlist” means: a sequence of local video files, or a YouTube playlist of published videos. Those are different workflows.
What cron can—and cannot—schedule
A crontab entry has five time fields—minute, hour, day of month, month and weekday—followed by a command. Ubuntu’s Noble crontab documentation says cron checks entries every minute and runs commands as the owner of that crontab. Cron can launch an encoder script at a chosen time; it does not by itself create a YouTube event, confirm that the encoder connected, or guarantee that a scheduled broadcast went live.
Think of the setup as two coordinated schedules: YouTube’s broadcast schedule and the local cron schedule. YouTube Studio prepares the event; the encoder sends video to it when started. If you need an entirely unattended transition to live, decide how that transition is handled rather than assuming that starting FFmpeg completes every Studio action.
Decide what “playlist” means
Local video files in sequence
If you mean files stored on the Ubuntu machine, FFmpeg can combine them for streaming. Its concatenation FAQ describes a concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding when the inputs and container parameters are compatible, and a concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed. Test with the actual files: incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates or audio layouts can prevent a clean join or require conversion.

A YouTube playlist of published videos
A YouTube channel playlist is not automatically a live broadcast. The cited FFmpeg guidance concerns local media concatenation, while the YouTube Live Streaming API describes live broadcast and stream resources. Do not assume that scheduling a normal playlist schedules it as a live stream; build a separate playback-and-encoder workflow if that is the intended result.
Prepare each YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe preparing the event there.
- Record the stream settings securely. Use the server URL and stream key shown for the event or stream. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, repositories and logs, and use separate keys or configurations where your channel setup calls for them.
- Configure the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance. It lists H.264 as a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. The guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Apply settings appropriate to your source and verify the encoder’s actual output.
- Test the handoff. Start the encoder manually first, confirm its preview appears in Live Control Room, then use the Studio “Go live” control if that is part of your workflow. YouTube’s documented preview-and-go-live process means that an encoder starting successfully is not proof that the broadcast is live.
The API is an optional development path for applications that create, schedule, manage and associate broadcast and stream resources. It adds API implementation work; it is not a prerequisite for cron to start an encoder pointed at an already prepared event.

Set India-local cron times on Ubuntu
Use the IANA time-zone name Asia/Kolkata when your cron implementation supports a per-crontab time zone. Ubuntu Noble’s crontab(5) page documents CRON_TZ, but the Ubuntu Jammy page documents the classic cron implementation without establishing identical per-table support. The package and behavior can differ by Ubuntu release. Check the manual for the installed package and verify the schedule with a harmless test job before relying on it.
If per-crontab time zones are unavailable, configure the host’s time zone intentionally and verify the time cron uses. The time zone used for schedule interpretation can differ from the daemon’s time zone in log timestamps.

Illustrative crontab entries
CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata
15 8 * * 1-5 /home/streamer/bin/start_playlist_a.sh >> /home/streamer/logs/playlist_a.log 2>&1
45 20 * * 1-5 /home/streamer/bin/start_playlist_b.sh >> /home/streamer/logs/playlist_b.log 2>&1
These lines illustrate separate weekday jobs and per-job logs; they are not a tested end-to-end streaming command. Replace the example times, paths and scripts. Confirm that the target cron accepts CRON_TZ. If both day-of-month and weekday fields are restricted, ordinary cron semantics allow a run when either field matches—not only when both match.
Use a per-playlist script or a dispatcher
- Separate scripts and entries: easier to inspect when playlists have distinct schedules, keys or stop behavior.
- One dispatcher: useful when a single configuration selects which playlist to launch, but it must handle the schedule and prevent unintended duplicate runs.
- Overlapping jobs: check whether the host has enough CPU, memory and network capacity and whether the YouTube events and keys are configured for the intended simultaneous streams. Those limits depend on the specific setup.
Cron provides a limited environment compared with an interactive shell. Use absolute paths, define required environment variables in the script, make scripts executable, and ensure their user can read the media and write the logs. A crontab belongs to a user, so install it for the account that has the required file and process permissions.

Build and validate the local playlist workflow
- Place and inspect the media. Confirm every file exists, is readable by the cron user, and has compatible streams if you intend to concatenate without re-encoding.
- Choose the concat method. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when the files are suitable for stream-copy concatenation; use a concat filter and re-encode when they are not. Follow FFmpeg’s documentation and test the exact playlist, not just one representative file.
- Make the script explicit. Set working directories, use absolute executable and media paths, keep the stream key out of public text, and define whether playback should stop at the end or repeat. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the source formats, output settings and event configuration.
- Run it manually as the cron user. Confirm media playback, encoder connection, Studio preview and the intended live transition before adding the job to cron.
- Add one job and inspect its log. Capture both standard output and errors, then verify that the expected process started at the intended India-local time.
- Test stop and recovery behavior. Decide how a scheduled run ends, how duplicate processes are avoided, and what action follows a failed connection. Cron starting a process does not itself supervise the stream or prove that YouTube accepted it.
Keep the stream compliant and understand the archive limit
Only stream media you have the rights to use, including music, footage and any third-party material. YouTube’s live-stream guidance should be checked alongside your channel’s applicable copyright and monetization policies; a technically successful playlist is not permission to broadcast its contents. Do not assume that repeating or compiling videos makes them eligible for monetization.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder stream instructions. That statement is limited to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise about longer broadcasts.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The job runs at the wrong hour: check the host time zone, whether the installed cron supports
CRON_TZ, and the five-field schedule. Verify with a harmless logging entry. - The script works in a terminal but not from cron: cron has a limited environment. Use absolute paths, define needed variables and working directories, and check file permissions for the crontab owner.
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: verify the event, server URL, stream key, network access and encoder output. Confirm that the key belongs to the intended stream.
- The preview appears but the event is not live: follow the Studio transition required for that broadcast, or implement and validate an API-managed workflow if unattended broadcast management is required.
- Playback stops at a file boundary or fails on a file: inspect codec and container compatibility. Use the concat method suited to the inputs and re-encode where necessary.
- Two streams interfere or duplicate: check for overlapping cron entries, stale encoder processes, shared resources and whether the configured events and stream keys are distinct as intended.
- The log is empty or incomplete: confirm the cron user can write to the log directory and that output redirection is in the crontab entry; also inspect the system’s cron logs.
