YouTube says an administrator can mark a school account as under 18, which limits access to channel and live-stream features. If you are 18 or older, ask the school administrator to review that age designation; then sign in again and complete YouTube’s channel-creation steps. If the designation is already correct, check the channel’s verification and restriction notices.
Why a school account may not be able to live stream
A school-issued Google Workspace for Education account is managed by the school, including its access to YouTube. YouTube Help says that when an administrator marks a user as under 18, the school YouTube account is moved to a limited version of YouTube. The limits can include creating or using a channel and live streaming. This is an account setting, not a problem with your camera, encoder, or internet connection.
YouTube says this school-account change does not affect your personal Google or YouTube account. A family-managed supervised account is different: YouTube says supervised kid accounts are for personal accounts, while similar controls for school Workspace for Education accounts are managed by administrators.
If you are 18 or older: ask the school administrator to review the account
- Contact the school administrator or IT help desk. Explain that YouTube’s guidance for school accounts directs adults to ask the administrator to mark the account over 18.
- Ask them to check the age designation and applicable settings. Workspace settings can apply to selected users, organizational units, or configuration groups. Google says group settings override organizational-unit settings.
- Wait for confirmation that the account was updated. The administrator, not the student or channel owner, controls the school-managed setting.
- Sign in to YouTube again and complete the channel-creation workflow. If live streaming remains unavailable, check the channel’s notices and the separate eligibility requirements below.
Google’s Admin console also has an “Unrestricted YouTube access” control at Apps > Additional Google Services > YouTube > Permissions. It requires the Service Settings administrator privilege and concerns viewing YouTube content. It is distinct from the school account’s over-18 designation, and it does not override the Education restriction on under-18 users viewing content marked 18+.

If you are under 18
YouTube’s school-account guidance describes live streaming and channel features as limited for school accounts designated under 18. It does not describe the over-18 account remedy as an option for underage users. Follow your school’s policy and do not misstate your age to regain access.
If the age designation is correct, check other live-stream requirements
The school age setting is only one possible cause. YouTube’s live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 to live stream. Check the notice for the specific channel in YouTube Studio or your account before concluding that the school setting is responsible.

- Channel verification: Confirm that the channel has completed YouTube’s verification requirement.
- Recent restrictions: Look for a live-stream restriction within the past 90 days. YouTube’s restrictions guidance also discusses copyright and Community Guidelines enforcement, age requirements, certain channel conditions, and daily streaming limits.
- Correct channel: Make sure you are checking the channel that you intend to stream from; eligibility and notices attach to the channel and account state.
YouTube says a channel with an active live-stream restriction cannot use another channel to get around it. Do not try to bypass an active restriction by streaming from a different channel.
What the school administrator can check
Administrators manage YouTube settings in the Google Admin console and can apply them by organizational unit or configuration group. If the adult user’s age designation appears correct but the feature is still blocked, ask the administrator to check which settings apply to that user, including any group-level configuration. The general “Unrestricted YouTube access” permission controls viewing access; it does not itself change the under-18 designation described in YouTube’s school-account guidance.
