OBS has two different controls that people may mean by “playlist transition times”: scene transitions control how long a cut or fade between scenes takes, while playlist settings control how media files play and repeat. For one looping video, use a Media Source; for several videos, use a VLC Video source. Neither playlist control sets a separate clock time or crossfade duration for each item.
Choose the control that matches what you want to time
- Change between OBS scenes: Set the transition type and duration in the Scene Transitions controls. This determines how long the scene change takes.
- Advance through video files: Configure a Media Source for one repeating file or a VLC Video source for a playlist. These controls determine playback, order, and looping—not a per-item schedule.
YouTube does not provide a separate playlist-transition-duration setting in the OBS workflow described here. Configure the relevant source or scene transition in OBS instead.
Loop one video in OBS
- Add a Media Source to the scene containing the video.
- Select the video file in the source settings.
- Enable Loop. OBS repeats the file after playback completes.
This is the simplest setup when the same documentary or recording should play continuously. It repeats one file; it does not create transitions between multiple playlist items.
Set up a playlist of multiple videos
OBS uses a VLC Video source for a playlist of media files. VLC must be installed, and OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide for the documented source behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- In the source properties, add the video files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the last item.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback order. Leave it off for the listed order.
- Choose the source’s visibility behavior to determine what happens when it is hidden: playback can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playing, depending on the selected behavior.
Loop Playlist repeats the playlist after it runs out of media; it does not specify how many minutes each item should play. The documented VLC Video settings also do not establish an item-by-item clock schedule or guarantee a gap-free crossfade between playlist entries.
Set the duration of a scene fade or cut
If by “transition time” you mean the time it takes OBS to switch scenes, use the Scene Transitions controls. OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions from first launch, and the active transition’s duration can be changed. Quick Transitions can also have configured durations. The duration is the length of the scene change, not a timer for advancing the playlist. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

- In OBS, locate the Scene Transitions controls.
- Select Fade or Cut, or choose another available transition.
- Set the duration for the selected transition. A cut changes scenes immediately; a fade takes the configured time.
- If using Quick Transitions, configure their durations separately where applicable.
Scene-item show and hide transitions are separate from playlist timing as well. OBS’s scene API documentation describes show and hide transition durations in milliseconds; that API detail is not a UI walkthrough or a setting for when playlist items advance.
What OBS playlist settings do—and do not—schedule
| Need | OBS control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video | Media Source: Loop | Repeats the file after it finishes. |
| Repeat several videos | VLC Video: Loop Playlist | Restarts the playlist after it reaches the end. |
| Randomize a playlist | VLC Video: Shuffle Playlist | Randomizes playback order. |
| Control playback while hidden | VLC Video visibility behavior | Determines whether playback stops/restarts, pauses/resumes, or continues while the source is not visible. |
| Make a scene change take longer or shorter | Scene Transitions duration | Changes the length of the scene change, not the timing of playlist entries. |
| Set an exact duration for each playlist item or a crossfade between files | Not established by the documented settings | The cited OBS controls do not document an item-by-item clock schedule or guarantee seamless crossfades. |

The playlist stops after the last file
Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source. For a single Media Source, enable its separate Loop setting instead.
Files play in an unexpected order
Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn it off for sequential playlist order.

Playback changes when the source is hidden
Review the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior. The selected behavior determines whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while hidden.
A scene fade does not change playlist timing
That is expected: the scene transition duration applies to a scene change. Use the Media Source or VLC Video options for playback and looping; the documented playlist controls do not provide per-item timing or a promised crossfade.
