You can use FFmpeg to send an authorized playlist of Malayalam movie songs to a YouTube live event, but the playlist and encoder do not grant music rights or prevent YouTube from interrupting the stream. First clear the rights for the specific recordings and musical works, then build and test a compatible playlist, connect FFmpeg to the event’s ingest details, and monitor the broadcast. For a 24/7 stream, the computer running FFmpeg and its internet connection must remain available—or you can use a cloud service such as StreamNeo to loop uploaded videos without keeping a home computer on.
Clear rights for every song before you stream
A Malayalam film song can involve rights in both the underlying musical work and the particular sound recording. In India, the Copyright Act distinguishes those categories and addresses public performance and communication to the public. Those general legal provisions do not identify who owns an individual song or establish that a particular licence covers your proposed stream.
Make an inventory of the exact tracks and recordings you intend to use. Contact the relevant label, distributor, publisher, or other rights holders and obtain written permission that covers the actual uses you plan. Ask specifically about:
- Public online livestreaming on YouTube, including the territories in which viewers may watch.
- Monetization, if you intend to monetize the broadcast.
- Whether YouTube may keep an archive or replay after the live event ends.
- Any limits on the duration, channel, or other conditions of the permission.
A download or personal-listening licence is not, by itself, evidence of permission to livestream. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music. If the rights holder permits the use, ask it to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still cause problems if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.

Do not assume that an Indian statutory broadcasting-licence route automatically covers a creator’s 24/7 YouTube stream. Whether a particular route applies depends on the facts and the relevant legal requirements; the general statutory provisions do not settle eligibility for this use.
Prepare a playlist FFmpeg can read
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a plain-text list and presents the listed files one after another. Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one entry per file:
file '/media/song-01.mp4'
file '/media/song-02.mp4'
file '/media/song-03.mp4'
Use paths to files you have permission to stream. Quote or escape paths correctly if they contain special characters, and check that every listed path exists on the machine running FFmpeg. The files need matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases, for concat demuxing to work reliably. If the tracks differ, normalize them to compatible technical parameters before relying on a single concat list.

Duration accuracy matters: FFmpeg’s documentation warns that incorrect duration information can create artifacts, and that adjusting a timeline can produce gaps when stream lengths differ. A file list alone does not guarantee gapless transitions. Play the output through several track changes and inspect both sound and picture; fix mismatches before leaving the stream unattended.
There are two practical ways to prepare the material:
- Use a concat list: convenient when you want to reorder or replace individual tracks, provided the files have compatible streams and accurate timing.
- Prepare one normalized media file: can simplify input handling, but changing the catalog then means preparing the combined media again. It still requires permission for every included recording and work.
The documentation does not establish a benchmark showing that one approach is universally better. Choose based on how often you update the playlist and how well your files match.

Create the YouTube event and connect FFmpeg
- Enable live access in advance. For a first livestream, YouTube for Artists says account verification should be completed at least 24 hours before going live. Check current eligibility and feature availability in YouTube Studio.
- Create or schedule the live event in YouTube Studio. Retrieve the ingest details for the event. In YouTube’s API model, a live broadcast is associated with a live stream; Studio provides the corresponding setup for creators.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Use the ingest settings for the protocol you selected. For a basic RTMP workflow, use the event’s configured ingest URL and stream key and follow the current encoder guidance shown by YouTube Studio. Do not copy HLS-specific settings into an RTMP setup.
- Test before scheduling a long broadcast. YouTube for Artists recommends testing an unlisted stream. Confirm the event receives audio and video and watch several playlist transitions before switching to a public broadcast.
For compatible files and an RTMP ingest URL plus key combined into the value of an environment variable, a schematic FFmpeg invocation is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL"
Set YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL on the streaming machine to the complete ingest destination supplied for your event; do not put the key in a public script or repository. This example uses stream copy, so it does not convert mismatched files or choose a common resolution, codec, bitrate, or frame rate. Use it only when the listed media’s streams are compatible and accepted by the configured ingest. If conversion is needed, set the output video and audio parameters to values supported by YouTube’s current guidance and your source material; the appropriate values depend on the media and ingest configuration, so there is no single bitrate or resolution that can be prescribed for every playlist here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe command loops the concat input, but it does not prove the whole setup will stay online indefinitely. Keep the FFmpeg process running, ensure the host and network remain available, and monitor YouTube Studio for stream status and notices. A process restart after a crash or network failure requires an operational plan outside this command.

Use HLS only when you have chosen HLS ingestion
YouTube supports HLS as an ingest option, but it has protocol-specific encoder requirements. Its developer guidance specifies muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and one audio track. It describes HLS segments generally lasting one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds.
Those requirements apply to HLS implementations, not universally to every YouTube livestream or a basic RTMP command. If you choose HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS playlist, sequence, and segment requirements for the implementation you use. Do not treat an RTMP command as an HLS setup, or assume HLS is inherently superior for a continuous music stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test transitions, watch for enforcement, and plan for the archive
During an unlisted test, check the stream dashboard and listen across multiple transitions. Confirm that the picture is present, audio is audible, and the event continues after the playlist reaches its end and loops. Recheck the rights scope for an archive: YouTube may make a Content ID claim after the stream ends if the live event is archived.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party material. It may replace the picture with a placeholder, warn the operator, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the material continues. A licence does not guarantee uninterrupted playback; for licensed content, YouTube advises asking the owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Territory restrictions on rights do not remove the need to resolve allowlisting.
A credit line, noncommercial intent, short excerpt, audio-only presentation, or unlisted test is not a technical or rights workaround. None should be treated as a guarantee against Content ID action or interruption. If a notice appears, check its details in Studio, contact the relevant rights holder or distributor, and follow the platform’s process rather than repeatedly restarting the same disputed material.
Keep the stream running around the clock
A self-hosted FFmpeg stream depends on the machine running the encoder, its power, and its network connection. A home computer that sleeps, loses power, or disconnects can stop the broadcast; continuous operation also means managing monitoring and recovery when the process or YouTube connection fails.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
