Use Replay Buffer when you want to save recent footage on demand. They solve different retention problems: Replay Buffer is not a full-stream archive, and YouTube’s live DVR is a separate viewer control that lets people seek back during a broadcast.
Replay Buffer or continuous recording?

These are different workflows, not interchangeable settings. Replay Buffer preserves only a recent segment when triggered; continuous recording is the relevant choice for a complete local archive. Their exact behavior can vary with OBS version and configuration. See the OBS Studio overview.
Set up Replay Buffer for moments worth keeping

In OBS, open the output settings and enable Replay Buffer. The exact location and labels can vary by installed version and output mode.

Set the maximum replay time and maximum memory limits. These are limits, not a universal RAM-per-minute formula; memory use depends on output settings and encoder behavior.

Assign a save hotkey, then use it when you want to preserve the recent segment. Check the hotkey before relying on it during a live broadcast.

Run a short test and confirm that the saved clip contains the intended interval and audio. OBS interface strings warn that replay saving is unavailable while recording is paused, so verify the behavior in your installed version.
Replay Buffer is useful for capturing a moment without retaining every hour of a long broadcast. Clips you save still need storage, and the buffer itself uses memory. It should not be treated as a continuous archive.

Choose a recording path on a drive with enough free space for the intended retention period. The required capacity depends on encoder, quality, resolution, frame rate, and duration; OBS does not give one universal drive-capacity recommendation.

Choose a recording format. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. OBS says it can remux a recording after recording stops if you need another container; test the workflow before depending on it. No format prevents every failure. See the standard recording output guide.

Choose recording quality in the recording output settings. “Same as stream” uses the stream’s settings, reducing divergence between the live feed and local copy, but recordings using that preset cannot be paused. Recording at a different quality uses additional system resources.

Match quality to your archive needs and hardware. OBS describes “High Quality” as a medium-file-size preset and “Indistinguishable” as a larger-file option that can affect performance on weaker or older hardware. The “Lossless” preset is especially storage-intensive: OBS Project reported around 7 GB per minute of video for lossless quality in its 2023 guide. That figure applies to that preset, not to typical recordings at other settings. See the recording encoder presets guide.

Start a representative test recording and check the file, audio, and available storage before relying on a long-running archive. For a 24/7 setup, test a sustained run and monitor storage rather than assuming a brief successful start proves the workflow is safe.

Keep YouTube’s live controls separate
YouTube DVR controls whether viewers can seek back during a live stream. It does not enable OBS Replay Buffer or create a local recording. A recording may be available after a stream even when viewers could not seek back during it. Details are in YouTube’s DVR help.
For the stream itself, YouTube recommends choosing encoder settings that provide a reliable stream for the available connection, testing with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health during the event. It recommends RTMPS. YouTube also advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Consult its live encoder settings guidance for encoder settings; there is no universally safe bitrate, resolution, or encoder choice for every computer and connection.

No replay clip is saved: Confirm Replay Buffer is enabled, the save hotkey is assigned and registering, and recording is not paused. Check the relevant controls in your OBS version.

The archive is incomplete: Replay Buffer only saves a recent segment on demand. Use continuous recording when the goal is to retain the full local stream.

Recording stops or the file is damaged after a crash: Use the MKV workflow OBS recommends for resilience, and test remuxing if another container is required. This reduces a particular failure risk but does not guarantee recovery from every interruption.

OBS or the computer struggles while recording: A recording quality different from the stream adds resource demand; higher-quality presets can also mean larger files, and Indistinguishable may affect weaker or older hardware. Reassess quality and test under representative conditions.

The drive fills sooner than expected: Estimate capacity from your actual settings and retention duration, then check free space during a sustained test. The lossless figure of around 7 GB per minute is not a general estimate for other presets.

Viewers cannot seek back: Check YouTube’s DVR setting. It is independent of OBS recording and Replay Buffer.

The live stream is unstable: Test the upload connection and encoder settings with representative movement and audio, then monitor YouTube stream health. Adjust for the available connection rather than assuming a setting that worked in a short test will suit continuous operation.
