YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation explicitly supports HEVC (H.265), making HLS the clearest documented route for sending H.265 video from a remote server. The trade-off is higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC. YouTube’s documentation conflicts on whether RTMP/RTMPS accepts HEVC, so verify the current ingest protocol in Live Control Room before relying on that route.

Choose the ingest protocol before configuring the server

For a documented HEVC path, use YouTube HLS ingestion. Its guide specifies HEVC video in a muxed M2TS stream with AAC audio. HLS uploads media playlists and segments over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST, and YouTube specifies segments of one to four seconds. Because it is segment-based, HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC; YouTube does not publish a measured end-to-end delay for this particular workflow. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide explains the format and transport requirements.

RTMPS may be attractive when lower latency matters, but HEVC support is not unambiguous in YouTube’s published guidance. The current live encoder settings page lists H.265, including for HDR over RTMP(S), while Google’s protocol comparison, last updated June 1, 2026 UTC, lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS and HEVC for HLS. Do not assume the pages have been reconciled. Check the protocol shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder supports that exact route before an event.

Consideration HLS RTMPS
HEVC documentation Explicitly listed in YouTube’s HLS guide. Settings page lists HEVC, but the protocol comparison lists H.264 only; verify support for your current stream.
Latency Usually higher because delivery is segment-based. YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ordinary content, especially low latency; no exact delay is established here.
Media and transport Muxed M2TS, HEVC video, AAC audio; HTTPS playlist and segment uploads. RTMP carried over TLS using the correct ingest URL and application path, port 443, and SNI.
HDR Supported with HEVC and specified 10-bit color metadata. YouTube’s settings page says HDR via RTMP(S) supports H.265, subject to the documentation conflict above.
Best fit Clearly documented HEVC ingest, including high-resolution or HDR delivery where greater latency is acceptable. A possible lower-latency choice if Live Control Room and the encoder confirm HEVC compatibility.

See YouTube’s protocol comparison and its HDR live-streaming guidance for the relevant distinctions.

Check the source file and server first

Before sending an existing H.265 recording unchanged, inspect its video profile, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio codec, and container. Passthrough avoids re-encoding the video, but it does not make an unsupported container or audio track acceptable. For HLS, YouTube’s documented requirements are muxed M2TS, HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and no more than 60 fps. The guide supports one audio track.

  • Confirm the source is HEVC/H.265 rather than a differently encoded file with a misleading filename.
  • Check that the frame rate does not exceed 60 fps and that the GOP is closed.
  • Check the audio codec and track count; for HLS, use AAC and a single audio track.
  • Check that the server can sustain the chosen outbound bitrate with additional headroom for protocol overhead and network variation. YouTube’s recommended stream bitrate is not a guarantee of what a particular server connection can deliver.

If the video is already HEVC but its audio or container fails these requirements, remux or transcode the necessary parts rather than assuming the entire file can be copied unchanged. The official requirements establish the target format, but do not validate a particular file or FFmpeg command.

Configure HLS ingest for HEVC

  1. Get the HLS ingest address. Obtain it through the YouTube Live API or the creator interface. The interface route is described as beta and may change; use the address provided for your stream rather than constructing one from a guessed URL. See the HLS guide.
  2. Prepare the media stream. Use muxed M2TS containing HEVC video and AAC audio, with a closed GOP and frame rate at or below 60 fps. HLS sends media playlists and segments; YouTube specifies segment durations of one to four seconds.
  3. Upload over HTTPS. Send the playlist and its segments to the supplied endpoint using HTTP PUT or POST. The HLS guide describes a rolling playlist, TS segments, no byte range, and HTTPS upload. Follow the playlist and upload behavior required by that guide rather than substituting a master playlist.
  4. Keep the server process and network path available. Monitor the uploader and the server’s outbound connection while the event is live. A valid encoding does not help if the process stops or the server loses connectivity.
  5. Confirm reception in Live Control Room. Check that YouTube receives both picture and sound and that stream health does not show warnings before you direct viewers to the watch page.

Set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It recommends no more than 60 fps. The following HEVC bitrate figures are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are guidance, not independent test results.

Output Recommended HEVC bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These are HEVC recommendations; do not substitute H.264 figures. Choose a bitrate that the remote server’s stable upload connection can sustain, allowing overhead and fluctuations. The figures and general encoder guidance are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

Use RTMPS only after checking HEVC compatibility

If Live Control Room offers RTMPS for the stream and your encoder confirms HEVC support for that configuration, obtain the ingest address from Live Control Room or the YouTube Live API. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide for the endpoint details.

  • Use the supplied address with the rtmps protocol and its valid server and application path.
  • Connect over TLS on port 443 and provide SNI with the correct server hostname.
  • Keep the stream key private; treat it like a password and do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, or shared configuration.
  • If TLS fails, check that the endpoint and port are correct. If the connection times out, confirm that the client is using RTMPS rather than plain RTMP.

Because YouTube’s protocol pages conflict about HEVC over RTMP(S), a successful endpoint connection alone should not be treated as proof that the intended codec is accepted. Verify the received stream and health status in Live Control Room before relying on it.

Preserve HDR metadata when HDR is the goal

YouTube’s documented HLS HDR format uses HEVC, 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG transfer, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and matching source color metadata. The source’s actual color characteristics must agree with the output metadata; labeling ordinary SDR footage as HDR does not make it HDR. Check both the file and encoder output rather than changing metadata blindly. YouTube also lists H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S), but the separate protocol comparison conflict still makes HLS the clearer documented choice when HEVC acceptance must be certain.

For encoder options and HDR compatibility details, consult YouTube’s HDR guidance and the HLS requirements.

Test and monitor the actual remote workflow

YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance calls for testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and warning messages during the event. Use the same source, server, protocol, bitrate, audio path, and intended duration as the real stream.

  1. Start a test transmission and confirm that Live Control Room receives video and audio.
  2. Check stream health and address any warnings before the event begins.
  3. Open the watch page and confirm playback, sound, and the expected quality rendition.
  4. Monitor the server-side uploader and network path as well as YouTube’s stream health while live.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive video from an HLS stream Incorrect ingest address, playlist type, transport, or media format. Use the HLS address issued for the stream; confirm HTTPS PUT or POST, media rather than master playlists, and the required M2TS/HEVC/AAC format.
Video arrives but audio is missing or rejected Unsupported audio codec or track configuration. For HLS, check for AAC and a single audio track in the muxed stream.
Connection stalls or drops Server connectivity or upload capacity is insufficient, or the sending process stopped. Inspect server logs and outbound network stability; compare available sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate plus overhead.
RTMPS reports an SSL or TLS error Wrong endpoint, port, or hostname/SNI configuration. Use the supplied RTMPS address, port 443, TLS, and SNI matching the server hostname.
RTMPS times out The client may be attempting plain RTMP or using an incorrect endpoint. Confirm the URL uses RTMPS and re-check the application path and ingest address.
RTMPS connects but HEVC is not accepted The documentation conflict reflects a real compatibility or configuration issue. Check the stream’s current protocol in Live Control Room and the encoder’s supported codec/protocol combination; use documented HLS if you need an explicit HEVC route.
HDR looks washed out or is not recognized as HDR Color metadata does not match the source or the required HDR format. Verify 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and matching source metadata.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a different workflow from operating your own remote encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial registration.
