Check the full FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room health messages first; then determine whether FFmpeg is intentionally changing the frame rate, falling behind while encoding, unable to send the configured bitrate over the server’s connection, or using a setting YouTube has flagged. Without the command, logs, server measurements, and health message, there is no reliable single flag to prescribe.
1. Capture evidence before changing the command
Save the exact FFmpeg command and complete stderr output, including the period when drops occur. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing either. Record the FFmpeg version, input source and frame rate, output resolution and frame rate, configured video bitrate, and the corresponding YouTube Live Control Room health message.
Watch FFmpeg’s reported input and output rates, speed, and drop or duplicate counters over time. A counter alone does not tell you whether frames were discarded deliberately to meet an output rate or lost because processing could not keep up.
For machine-readable progress, FFmpeg provides -progress. For timestamp and latency investigation, it provides -debug_ts; FFmpeg warns that this debug output format can change, so avoid relying on a portable parser for it. See the FFmpeg documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check whether FFmpeg is deliberately dropping frames
Inspect the command for an output -r option. During video encoding, FFmpeg’s output -r duplicates or drops frames to create the requested constant frame rate. If it does not match your intended output, remove it or set the intended rate to one that suits the source and YouTube stream plan. Confirm the effect in the log rather than assuming every drop is a performance failure.
Do not substitute input -r without understanding the source. FFmpeg documents that input -r ignores stored timestamps and assumes a constant input frame rate. For relevant raw inputs, FFmpeg recommends using -framerate when unsure. Input and output frame-rate options do different jobs; changing the wrong one can make timing worse.

3. Inspect filters and changing input properties
If the source can change resolution or pixel format while running, check for filtergraph reinitialization in the log. FFmpeg enables reinitialization by default when relevant input frame properties change, and buffered frames are lost when it reinitializes. Its specialized -drop_changed option instead drops frames with changed parameters and defaults to false. These are clues for inputs whose properties vary, not general-purpose fixes for a slow stream. See the FFmpeg documentation before changing either behavior.
4. Check the server’s sustained outbound capacity
Compare the configured outgoing bitrate with sustained bandwidth available from the remote server—not just a brief peak or the nominal speed advertised for an instance. Leave capacity for audio and network overhead, and check for congestion or competing traffic during the drop period. YouTube advises choosing a quality the connection can reliably support; its error guidance says to consider lowering resolution when available bandwidth is insufficient for the selected resolution.

YouTube’s published minimum and recommended video bitrate settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026, not bandwidth guarantees or performance measurements.
| Ingest format | AV1 or H.265 video bitrate Minimum / recommended |
H.264 video bitrate Minimum / recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 / 12 Mbps | 6 / 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 / 10 Mbps | 5 / 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
Use the row that matches the actual ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not copy a bitrate from a different format. YouTube’s official bitrate table includes additional formats as well. If your measured connection cannot sustain the chosen setting, test a lower resolution or frame rate and check whether both FFmpeg’s counters and YouTube’s health status improve. 5. Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest requirements
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages against the settings FFmpeg is actually sending. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, supported codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says they should be no farther apart than 4 seconds. Its error guidance says a 30 fps stream should send a keyframe every 60 frames.
YouTube recommends 128 Kbps audio for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Its error guide also calls out 44.1 kHz audio and one or two supported channels in relevant configurations. Check the applicable requirement for your exact setup rather than applying those audio values indiscriminately. A health warning with a timestamp is more useful than changing settings that YouTube has not flagged.

6. Reduce encoding load only if measurements point to it
If FFmpeg’s encoding speed falls behind real time and server measurements show the encoder or CPU is saturated, test a less demanding configuration—such as lower resolution, lower frame rate, or a less intensive encoding setup—one change at a time. Compare the same periods’ FFmpeg progress and YouTube health messages. The available case information does not establish that any particular server is short of CPU or that upgrading it will fix the drops.
If considering a larger server, base the decision on observed encoder lag or CPU load, sustained outbound bandwidth, egress limits, and network route. A hardware or provider change is conditional on identifying that bottleneck, not the first troubleshooting step.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Drops appear when an output -r is set |
Whether the requested output rate differs from the source or intended stream rate | Remove the accidental conversion or choose the intended output rate, then inspect the counters again. |
| Encoding speed falls below real time | FFmpeg progress and host CPU or encoder load during the same interval | Test a lower-demand resolution, frame rate, or encoding configuration; consider a larger host only if measurements confirm the processing bottleneck. |
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bandwidth | Sustained outbound capacity versus the configured video bitrate, plus competing traffic | Reduce the output bitrate or resolution as appropriate and verify stream health after the change. |
| YouTube flags a keyframe, codec, or other ingest setting | The timestamped Live Control Room message and the actual FFmpeg output settings | Correct the setting named by YouTube; for keyframes, use the recommended 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Drops coincide with a source property change | Input resolution or pixel-format changes and filtergraph reinitialization messages | Address the changing input or investigate the relevant FFmpeg reinitialization behavior; do not apply specialized drop options as a general fix. |
| There is no clear cause in the counters | Complete FFmpeg logs, timestamped YouTube health messages, source rate, host load, and sustained outbound capacity | Collect these together and change one variable at a time so the result identifies a cause rather than masking it. |
