To change tracks automatically, build the playlist in the software sending your audio to YouTube—not in YouTube itself. One local-file method is to add a VLC Video Source in OBS, load the tracks in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS then sends the resulting audio and visuals to YouTube Live. The playlist can advance and repeat, but keeping a stream live around the clock also depends on the computer, power, internet connection, media files, and stream connection.
Where the playlist belongs
YouTube Live receives an encoder’s outgoing feed. Track selection and playback therefore happen upstream, in a playout source or encoder workflow. YouTube’s HLS media playlists and segments are part of video delivery, not a song queue. See YouTube’s HLS setup information and Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
For a straightforward playlist of local audio files, OBS with a VLC Video Source is one route. The interface can vary by operating system and software version; the steps below follow the workflow described by iTechGuides, and have not been independently verified here for every OBS or VLC release.
Set up automatic track changes with OBS and VLC
1. Confirm YouTube Live is available
Open YouTube Studio and create or configure the live stream. In YouTube’s encoder setup guide, initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. If this is your first stream, allow for that delay before planning a launch.

2. Build the OBS scene
Create the scene that viewers will see, such as a still image, a visualizer, or other video elements you have the rights to use. Add a VLC Video Source, then select or add the local audio files in the intended playback order. Enable the source’s playlist-loop option so playback returns to the beginning after the final track.
Check the current OBS and VLC controls on your installation: labels and placement can change. Make sure the VLC source’s audio is routed into the OBS mix, and that the scene has a valid visual output. A playlist can be playing correctly while the stream still has silent audio or an unintended blank visual.

3. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you created. Enter those encoder details in OBS using its streaming configuration, then start streaming from OBS. YouTube’s guide explains the encoder connection at Create a live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not show or share it publicly.
4. Verify playback before relying on it
- Confirm YouTube Studio receives the live feed and that the intended scene appears.
- Listen to the stream output to verify audio is present and not muted or routed to the wrong source.
- Observe a track change, then verify that playback returns to the first track after the playlist ends.
- Check that the visual remains present during transitions and while the playlist loops.
- Keep the computer, OBS process, network connection, and source files available for the full time you expect the broadcast to run.
There is no universal test procedure established for every operating system and software version, so confirm the behavior on the setup you will actually use.

What a looping playlist does—and does not—guarantee
Loop Playlist automates playback order; it does not make the whole broadcast independent of the machine running OBS. A desktop shutdown, power loss, network interruption, missing media file, encoder failure, or dropped connection can stop the feed. For a continuous channel, decide who will monitor it and how playback will be restarted if the local host or connection fails.
Remote hosting or radio automation software may suit operators who need remote access, scheduled rotations, or additional control. These are categories to evaluate, not endorsements of a particular provider. Compare where schedules are maintained, what monitoring and restart controls are available, how transitions and visuals are handled, and how the music-rights workflow is managed.

Make sure the tracks are cleared for live streaming
Having an audio file or a license does not automatically ensure a YouTube live broadcast can use it without interruption. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube says a match may result in the stream being replaced by a placeholder and a warning; unresolved content can lead to interruption or termination. Details are in Copyright issues with live streams.
Confirm that your rights cover public live streaming of each recording. If a rights owner requires the channel to be added to its Content ID allowlist, arrange that before relying on the licensed track in the broadcast. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.

Does YouTube archive a 24/7 stream?
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance concerns recordings, not uninterrupted operation: it does not establish that a 24/7 live event will remain connected or be archived as one continuous video. Check YouTube’s current encoder guide for the applicable details.
