You can run a YouTube radio-style livestream by using OBS Studio to show a still image while looping prerecorded audio, then sending the encoded stream to YouTube Live Control Room. For a do-it-yourself setup, OBS, a computer that stays on, and a stable upload connection are the core pieces. This can keep a broadcast running for long periods, but YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee that a single stream will stay live indefinitely.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
- A computer that can run OBS and remain powered on for the broadcast.
- An image file for the stream’s visual layer and one or more audio files you have permission to use in a worldwide livestream.
- A reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate.
Check channel eligibility before building the schedule around a launch. YouTube’s rules can change, so confirm the current requirements in YouTube Studio if your channel’s status is uncertain.
Choose a single track or a playlist

A playlist gives you more programming variety but requires you to maintain its order and contents. A single looping file is simpler to manage. In either case, make sure the audio itself is suitable to repeat for the duration you intend to broadcast.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live Control Room
- Prepare cleared media. Confirm that the image and every recording are cleared for YouTube livestreaming worldwide, including any replay. Do not rely on personal streaming access or a generic “royalty-free” label as proof of the necessary rights.
- Create a scene in OBS. Add an Image source and select the still image. Size and position it to fill the canvas without unintended cropping or blank borders.
- Add looping audio. For one file, add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. For multiple files, install VLC if needed, add a VLC Video source, select the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Confirm that audio plays and that the image remains visible in the scene.
- Create the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings, then Stream, and configure the service and server/key using the values from Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Use a compatible output. YouTube’s encoder error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. Even when the picture is a still image, the encoder must send a valid video stream.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Listen for the audio, confirm that the image displays correctly, and check the stream-health indicator before beginning the public broadcast.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on OBS and Live Control Room, especially at launch. Verify that playback continues, the connection remains healthy, and the audio has not stopped or become silent.
Budget upload bandwidth and plan for interruptions
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. That is a recommendation for spare capacity, not a guarantee of stability; other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce what is available to OBS. Test the actual upload connection under realistic household or workplace use before committing to a long broadcast.

- Use a reliable connection and avoid saturating it with other uploads.
- A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to connect the computer to a compatible router. It does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.
- Run a test with audio and motion comparable to the intended broadcast, then check the preview and health indicator before launch.
- Remember that a local setup depends on the computer staying powered, OBS and the media source continuing to run, and the network sustaining the upload.
Copyright, archived replays, and monetization
Clear rights for the music and image
YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Confirm that each license covers YouTube livestreaming, the relevant territories, and any archived replay. A license for personal listening or for another platform may not cover this use.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its copyright guidance says it may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if third-party material remains. Even a licensed track may require the rights owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID. If a stream is interrupted, review the notices in Live Control Room and resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner before restarting.

Do not assume a 24-hour event will produce a complete replay
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived as a complete replay. If an archive matters, consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions and verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
Do not assume this format qualifies for monetization
YouTube offers livestream revenue mechanisms such as ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships, subject to eligibility and settings; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Those features alone do not establish that a repetitive 24/7 stream of prerecorded audio and a static image qualifies under current channel monetization policies. Check the policies applicable to your channel and format rather than building a budget around expected live-stream revenue.
