You can keep a prerecorded YouTube Live stream running from a low-cost VPS by having FFmpeg send a compatible file to YouTube over RTMPS, looping or restarting the process under a supervisor, and checking YouTube’s stream health—not just whether FFmpeg is still running. The biggest cost-saving move is to avoid real-time encoding when the source already matches your output requirements. There is no universal minimum RAM or vCPU count: the file, encoding mode, resolution, frame rate, and VPS provider’s sustained outbound capacity all matter.
First decide whether FFmpeg needs to encode the video
A 24/7 stream can put very different loads on a small VPS depending on what FFmpeg does with the media.
Use stream copy when the source is already compatible
If the file’s video and audio codecs already work with YouTube’s ingest settings and the desired output, FFmpeg can pass the streams through while remuxing them as needed. This avoids the ongoing CPU work of decoding and encoding every frame. Check the actual file before choosing this mode; a container such as MP4 or MKV does not by itself tell you whether its audio and video codecs or stream parameters are suitable.
Inspect a file with ffprobe, for example:
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,bit_rate,sample_rate,channels -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4
Compare the reported codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio properties with the output you intend to send. Stream copy is not a fix for an incompatible codec, an unwanted resolution or frame rate, or damaged media.

Re-encode only when the source needs conversion
When you must change resolution, frame rate, codec, or other stream properties, FFmpeg has to encode in real time. That uses CPU continuously, and the load depends on the source, encoder, preset, output settings, and available hardware acceleration. Test the exact file and command for long enough to reveal sustained load; a brief start-up test does not establish that a VPS can encode around the clock.
Do not choose a VPS solely from a claimed RAM or vCPU minimum. The available evidence does not establish a universal minimum for either: source characteristics and encoding mode change the requirement. For a bitrate-limited stream, the host’s sustained outbound capacity is also essential.
Choose output settings the VPS can sustain
Start with a modest resolution and frame rate that suit the material, then select a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations and verify that the VPS can deliver it continuously. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the output. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance.

Allow headroom beyond the target stream bitrate for network variation and other outbound traffic. A plan’s advertised bandwidth or transfer allowance is not proof of uninterrupted, sustained egress at the needed rate; check the provider’s terms and test from the VPS. If the connection cannot reliably sustain your chosen output, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than repeatedly pushing an unstable feed.
| Setting or choice | What to use or check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video bitrate | Use YouTube’s current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264, 720p at 30 fps is listed at 8 Mbps and 480p at 30 fps at 4 Mbps. | The VPS must sustain the outbound stream, not merely have enough storage or memory. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. | Keep the encoder output aligned with the platform’s ingest guidance. |
| Rate control | YouTube’s current settings include CBR as a recommendation; check the table for your selected codec and format. | A predictable bitrate helps you plan sustained egress. |
| Protocol | Prefer RTMPS for an ordinary low-latency stream where supported. | It encrypts the connection between encoder and ingest. |
The current YouTube guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and also lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with codec-specific settings. Do not treat the H.264 figures above as universal values for every codec or resolution. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” For protocol trade-offs, YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ordinary low-latency streaming; HLS and DASH generally involve higher latency. Consult its encoder guidance and ingestion protocol comparison.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming on the channel. Complete any YouTube account or channel requirements shown in YouTube Studio before scheduling your first broadcast.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room, configure the broadcast, and locate its stream key and ingest details. YouTube’s labels and availability can change, so follow the current Studio interface.
- Use the RTMPS ingest details YouTube provides. Do not guess an endpoint or path. Google’s documentation describes the RTMPS URL, valid endpoint and path, TLS connection, and port 443 requirements; use the destination supplied for your broadcast and ensure the VPS network permits the connection. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. Restrict access to the file or service configuration that contains it, and regenerate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Check rights before scheduling a loop. A 24/7 broadcast does not exempt a channel from copyright rules. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s policies and the status of the channel before relying on a continuous broadcast. Repeatedly replaying material is not, by itself, proof that it complies with copyright or YouTube monetization rules.
Run FFmpeg headlessly and make the loop recoverable
A VPS has no need for a desktop session: FFmpeg can run as a background service. The command below is a starting pattern for a file that has already been checked for compatibility. Replace the input path and ingest URL with your own values. Do not paste a real stream key into a command that other users can inspect or that may be recorded in shell history or process listings.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/video.mp4
-c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-re reads the file at its normal playback rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input; -c copy avoids re-encoding; and -f flv selects the RTMP-family output container expected by this style of ingest. This example is only appropriate when the source streams are compatible. If conversion is needed, replace copy mode with tested encoder settings that match YouTube’s current recommendations and your VPS capacity. Use YouTube’s actual RTMPS endpoint and path rather than the illustrative placeholders.
For secret handling, place the key in a configuration mechanism with restrictive permissions and use a service manager to launch FFmpeg; avoid embedding it in a publicly readable script. Configure the service to restart after an unexpected exit, and inspect its logs when it does. A supervisor can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but it cannot make an inadequate network connection reliable or establish that YouTube is receiving valid audio and video.
On a long-running broadcast, test loop boundaries as well as ordinary playback. Confirm the video starts again cleanly, audio is present and appropriately synchronized, and FFmpeg does not exit when it reaches the end of the file. For multiple videos, build and validate a playlist rather than assuming that concatenated files with different codecs or stream parameters will join cleanly.

Test the real feed and monitor YouTube’s health
Before depending on the broadcast, run a representative test with the actual file, settings, VPS, and destination. Watch YouTube’s live control room while the stream is being ingested. YouTube recommends pretesting and monitoring stream health and any messages it reports. A running FFmpeg process proves only that the process exists; it does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
- Check the video and audio at the YouTube end. Confirm the preview appears, motion is smooth enough for the content, audio is present, and the stream is not unexpectedly silent or distorted.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. The Live API documents statuses and diagnoses including low bitrate, unsupported video codec, no audio, and video starvation. Use the actual alert to guide your fix rather than changing settings blindly. See YouTube Live API stream status and health documentation.
- Check the VPS at the same time. Review FFmpeg output, service logs, CPU load when encoding, and network usage. A process restart, encoder overload, or network bottleneck can each interrupt delivery for different reasons.
- Observe at least one complete loop. This catches a file-end or playlist transition problem that a short test may miss.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits at the end of the video | The input was not configured to loop, or the loop option is in the wrong place for the intended input. | Use an input loop such as -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i, then confirm the process survives a full file duration. |
| YouTube reports low bitrate or video starvation | The VPS egress is unstable, another task is using bandwidth, or real-time encoding cannot keep pace. | Check the VPS’s network and encoder load; lower output demands or remove unnecessary encoding, then retest the complete path. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported video codec | The source was passed through even though its codec or stream parameters are not accepted for the broadcast. | Inspect with ffprobe; use a compatible source or re-encode to a codec and settings supported by YouTube’s current table. |
| YouTube reports no audio | The file may have no audio stream, the selected stream may be wrong, or the audio codec may not be suitable. | Check the file’s audio stream with ffprobe, verify the intended audio reaches the output, and encode to a supported audio format if needed. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 among its supported audio options. |
| FFmpeg is running but the YouTube preview is unhealthy or absent | Wrong ingest details or key, a TLS or port problem, invalid media, or a stalled upstream connection. | Compare the destination and key with the current YouTube Studio broadcast, verify the RTMPS connection requirements, and use YouTube’s health message and FFmpeg logs to narrow the cause. |
| The service restarts repeatedly | FFmpeg is exiting due to an input, configuration, resource, or connection error. | Read the service logs before changing restart policy. Fix the underlying error and test again; automatic restarts alone can conceal a recurring failure. |
| Video and audio are out of sync or loop transition is rough | The file’s streams or timestamps may not transition cleanly, or the source itself may have an issue. | Test the precise input and transition, inspect timestamps and stream properties, and prepare a compatible file or playlist rather than assuming stream copy will repair media. |
When a VPS is the wrong kind of “low-cost”
A VPS can reduce hands-on operation, but it does not remove the need to validate media, protect credentials, watch health signals, and account for sustained outbound traffic. Compare hosting on the variables that affect this workload: CPU allocation for re-encoding, sustained bandwidth and transfer terms, memory, storage for the source files, region availability, and renewal pricing. No particular provider or plan is established here, so verify those terms directly before committing.
If you prefer not to maintain an FFmpeg service, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running: it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. StreamNeo says its copy-mode option can avoid re-encoding where media is compatible; that is a vendor claim, so check the service details and your own source requirements. Compare the VPS approach with StreamNeo based on whether you want to administer the server yourself or hand off the continuous playback.
