YouTube Live Streaming Limits: OBS and a Backup Encoder

YouTube’s 10-stream channel cap and 3-stream key cap apply simultaneously. Here is how to prepare OBS and test a backup encoder without assuming how YouTube counts your configuration.

A YouTube channel can have up to 10 active streams, and a single stream key can have up to 3 active streams. Both limits apply at once: reaching either cap prevents another stream from starting. YouTube does not specify exactly how every primary-and-backup encoder arrangement is counted, so test your configuration in Live Control Room rather than assuming a standby encoder is exempt—or automatically counts as a second stream.

How YouTube’s active-stream limits apply

YouTube Help states that a channel may have 10 active streams and a stream key may have 3 active streams. These are simultaneous caps, not alternatives: a channel below its channel-wide cap can still hit the per-key cap, and vice versa. If either applicable limit is reached, another stream cannot start. YouTube’s active-stream limits do not explain how every encoder failover setup is counted while both encoders transmit.

These limits concern active streams. A configured backup that is not transmitting is not described as an active stream by the cited limit guidance. If the primary and backup are both sending, however, do not infer from the documentation whether YouTube will count that exact arrangement as one stream or two. Confirm the behavior with your own event and ingestion configuration.

Does a backup encoder count as another stream?

The published limit alone does not settle that question for every OBS-plus-backup setup. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder—or unplugging its Ethernet cable—and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. That recommendation supports testing the handoff, not assuming that switching will work automatically for every combination of software, hardware, stream key, and ingestion settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends validating the actual rollover.

Be precise about what you are testing: whether the backup begins delivering to the intended event, whether the viewer’s player changes over, and whether another stream can be started without encountering a channel or key limit. The documentation does not guarantee a universal failover behavior or define how all simultaneous backup-ingestion arrangements are counted.

Prepare OBS and the backup path

Check the event and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select or schedule the event. Confirm that you are configuring the intended broadcast and that its viewer page is available.
  2. In the encoder, enter the stream key and the correct ingestion details. YouTube allows custom stream keys for reuse and provides a way to reset a key if it is compromised. Keep the key private, and verify that both the primary and backup are pointed to the intended event and server details. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream-key instructions.
  3. Check the stream count before starting. If other broadcasts are already active on the channel or key, account for both caps: 10 active streams per channel and 3 per key.

Match encoder settings to the stream

For the selected resolution and frame rate, use the bitrate range and protocol guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the intended resolution and frame rate, so do not choose a value without checking the current table for that format.

Use settings the primary and backup can both sustain, and verify that the configured protocol matches the server details. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general ingestion. OBS is listed among encoders supporting YouTube HLS output; when using HLS with backup ingestion, YouTube’s instructions say to copy the Backup server URL. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so protocol choice can affect delay. These instructions do not establish that every OBS version automatically monitors and switches between encoders. See YouTube’s encoder settings and HLS ingestion instructions.

Budget upload bandwidth for both encoders

YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with another 20% headroom. For example, if the two configured feeds are each 6 Mbps, the recommendation implies planning for at least 14.4 Mbps of sustainable upload (6 + 6, then 20% headroom). That is a planning calculation from YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured guarantee of network performance. See YouTube’s guidance for a primary and backup encoder.

A backup does not protect against every shared failure. If both encoders depend on the same computer, power supply, router, or internet connection, a failure of that shared dependency can affect both paths. YouTube’s guidance recommends sufficient bandwidth and a failover test; it does not prescribe a particular redundant network or power architecture.

Test failover before the event

  1. Set up well ahead of airtime. YouTube’s preparation tips recommend setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a handoff will work.
  2. Preview in Live Control Room. Check that the event is accessible and that audio and video are correct before relying on the backup.
  3. Trigger the handoff deliberately. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then verify that the viewer’s player rolls over to the backup.
  4. Check the return path. Confirm what happens when the primary comes back, and make sure the intended encoder is delivering to the correct event. Avoid experimenting on an important live event; use a test event where practical.
  5. Check local recordings. YouTube’s preparation checklist also recommends checking local archive files, so a stream issue does not leave you without a local copy if your workflow records one.

Troubleshoot common limit and failover problems

  • A new stream will not start: Check how many streams are active on the channel and on the specific key. Either cap can block another stream.
  • The player does not roll over: Recheck the backup’s stream key, event, ingestion server, protocol, and encoder settings. Repeat YouTube’s recommended test by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, and observe the event in Live Control Room.
  • The backup connects but video or audio is wrong: Confirm that it is sending the intended source and that its resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio match the production requirements. Preview before the event rather than relying on a successful connection alone.
  • Both feeds are unstable: Compare combined encoder bitrates with sustainable upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check for shared network or power dependencies that could affect both encoders.
  • HLS backup ingestion is not reaching the right destination: Verify that the backup server URL was copied from YouTube’s HLS instructions and that the encoder supports the selected protocol.
  • A stream key may be exposed: Keep it private and reset it using YouTube’s stream-key controls before using it again.

Encoder redundancy, relays, and channel limits

Software encoders such as OBS and standalone hardware encoders are ways to encode a production; YouTube describes encoders as useful for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video equipment, and more advanced productions. It recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but does not say that a second hardware encoder is mandatory. Choose equipment only after confirming it supports the protocol and settings you need. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers these general options.

A cloud relay addresses a different need: YouTube describes cloud encoder services as ways to distribute one high-quality feed to multiple channels, resolutions, or platforms. That does not establish that a relay raises YouTube’s active-stream limits or guarantees failover. Check the particular service’s destination limits, failover behavior, and plan terms before relying on it. YouTube’s guidance discusses cloud encoder services in the context of distribution.
