Either AWS Lightsail or DigitalOcean can host a VPS that runs an encoder and sends a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live. Neither is established as the better-performing or more reliable choice for this job: compare the plan and transfer allowance for your region, the resources your encoding method needs, setup effort, and how you will monitor and recover the stream. YouTube is the destination; the VPS is the machine running the encoder.
How a VPS playlist stream works
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format for streaming. In a VPS setup, software such as FFmpeg reads or loops the playlist and sends its output to YouTube using the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. The VPS is not the streaming destination, and renting one does not itself make a channel live; you still configure and operate the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the server URL and stream key in an encoder and starting the stream. First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours, so allow for that before a planned launch.
Lightsail vs DigitalOcean: what the evidence supports
| Decision point | AWS Lightsail | DigitalOcean | What to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting role | Can host a VPS encoder; no Lightsail-specific playlist recipe is established here. | Can host a VPS encoder. DigitalOcean documents an SRS Marketplace stack that includes FFmpeg and supports streaming to YouTube. | Choose based on your comfort with Linux administration and the particular setup you plan to maintain. |
| Plan cost and transfer | Compare current pricing and included transfer for your intended region and plan at AWS Lightsail pricing. | Compare current pricing and included transfer for your intended region and plan at DigitalOcean Droplet pricing. | There is no defensible universal price winner without matching region, plan, transfer needs, and current prices. |
| CPU and memory | No provider-specific encoder benchmark established. | No provider-specific encoder benchmark established. | Size against your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether you re-encode or stream-copy; nominal vCPU and RAM alone do not prove equal performance. |
| Packaged streaming stack | No Lightsail-specific stack documented here. | DigitalOcean documents an SRS Marketplace option incorporating FFmpeg, with support for RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, and SRT, plus transcoding and restreaming capabilities. | The SRS listing is an implementation option, not a benchmark or proof it is the best fit for a single playlist. |
| Reliability | No end-to-end YouTube broadcast uptime guarantee established. | No end-to-end YouTube broadcast uptime guarantee established. | Plan for monitoring, restart behavior, and recovery; a hosting provider alone cannot guarantee that YouTube stays live. |
DigitalOcean’s SRS catalog snapshot was generated on 13 March 2024 and includes package versions, so treat its listed versions as a snapshot rather than a statement of what is current. The official documentation establishes that a possible stack exists, not comparative performance between providers.

Choose a plan for the actual workload
Estimate whether the VPS will encode or relay
If the software re-encodes video, CPU demand depends on the source and target codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and the amount of work happening simultaneously. A stream-copy workflow avoids the video-encoding step, but the source still needs to be compatible with the path to YouTube. Do not assume that two plans with similar advertised vCPU and memory will sustain the same workload; no like-for-like benchmark for these providers is established here.
Check transfer as well as monthly price
Continuous streaming sends data out to YouTube for as long as the feed runs. Compare the plan’s included transfer with your expected outbound stream volume and check the provider’s current billing terms for your selected region. Prices and allowances can change; review the official Lightsail pricing page and DigitalOcean Droplet pricing page before choosing. The available evidence does not establish a current, region-matched cost comparison, so it would be misleading to name one provider cheaper in general.

Set up the VPS-to-YouTube workflow
- Confirm the channel can go live. Enable YouTube Live in advance; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Select and provision a VPS. Choose a Lightsail or DigitalOcean plan in the region and size appropriate to your workload. Check the current price, included transfer, CPU, and memory before creating it.
- Prepare the playlist encoder. Install and configure an encoder or a streaming stack on the VPS. DigitalOcean documents an SRS Marketplace image that incorporates FFmpeg; OBS is also described by YouTube as free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. The cited documentation does not prescribe a specific playlist-loop command or Lightsail image, so use instructions for the exact software and operating system you select.
- Configure the YouTube destination. In the encoder, enter the YouTube Live server URL and the stream key from YouTube Studio, following YouTube’s setup flow. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in a public script or log.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start the encoder, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming feed is present and the intended stream is live. Test the complete playlist and loop behavior before relying on it continuously.
- Operate it, not just launch it. Monitor the encoder process and YouTube status, decide how the process should restart after failure or a VPS reboot, and maintain a recovery plan. Neither provider comparison evidence nor the documented SRS stack establishes uninterrupted end-to-end broadcasting.
YouTube limits, rights, and archive expectations
YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and that it may remove or restrict streams. The same help page states a simultaneous limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Ensure you have the rights and permissions for every item in your playlist; those platform rules do not determine whether a particular recording is cleared for use.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, as explained in its encoder help page. That statement does not promise a single complete archive for a feed that runs longer than 12 hours. Plan archive expectations accordingly rather than treating an indefinitely running stream as one guaranteed recording.

Common problems and what to check
- The stream does not start: Confirm live streaming is enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first activation, and check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder process is running, the VPS has network connectivity, and the encoder is configured for the intended output. Review its status and logs without exposing the stream key.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Check whether the encoder process exited, the VPS restarted, or the connection was lost. Configure monitoring and a tested restart/recovery procedure; automatic end-to-end recovery is not established for either VPS provider.
- The VPS struggles with the stream: Determine whether the workflow is re-encoding and inspect resource use under the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test an appropriately sized plan rather than inferring capacity from plan labels.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: Check stream duration against YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive behavior; the cited guidance does not guarantee one full archive for longer continuous streams.
- A stream is restricted or removed: Review YouTube policy compliance and the playlist’s rights and permissions; changing VPS providers does not resolve content-policy or copyright issues.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to provision and maintain a VPS, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
