Set your FFmpeg stream to YouTube’s recommended live video bitrate for its codec, resolution, and frame rate—not to a special rate for 24/7 streaming. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, and 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no interval longer than four seconds. The right target still has to fit your stable upload capacity.
Choose a bitrate for the stream you are sending
Bitrate means the rate of the encoded incoming video. Choose the row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate FFmpeg will send to YouTube. The table below reproduces YouTube’s recommended live-stream video ingestion rates; the figures are for video, not an audio-inclusive total. YouTube’s separate upload-video bitrate guidance is for prerecorded uploads and is not the table to use for a live stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings list these recommendations.
| Input codec | Resolution and frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |

| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| H.264 | 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.264 | 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1440p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1440p, 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 480p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| H.264 | 360p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a given connection or source will deliver a particular viewing experience. If your connection cannot sustain the selected rate reliably, a lower resolution or frame rate—and its corresponding recommended bitrate—may be a better operational choice than trying to force a higher-quality input.
Does YouTube need a different bitrate for a continuous stream?
No duration-based adjustment appears in YouTube’s published encoder guidance: an always-on stream does not have a different target simply because it runs for hours or days. Its duration changes the operational stakes, not the published bitrate recommendation. A rate that briefly works but exceeds stable upload capacity can starve the stream later.

Set the accompanying encoder parameters
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s Live API health guidance likewise says to use a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less. Configuration issues for LiveStream resources was last updated September 14, 2026 (UTC).
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for live streaming. Use the ingest address and stream key provided by YouTube Studio rather than making up an endpoint. Google’s RTMPS guide describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through SSL/TLS and specifies port 443 for integrations using that protocol.
- Audio, when configuring it: YouTube’s advanced-setting recommendations list AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio.
- Supported live codecs and frame rates: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
Verify FFmpeg syntax for your installed build
The YouTube guidance establishes the desired output behavior, but it does not document FFmpeg command-line syntax. FFmpeg builds can differ in available encoders and options, so there is no safe universal command to copy here. Check the documentation matching your installed FFmpeg version and the encoder you selected before configuring bitrate, rate control, keyframe/GOP behavior, or any buffer limits. A generic bitrate option by itself does not establish that the output is CBR or that its keyframes meet YouTube’s requirements.
- Identify the FFmpeg version and the specific video encoder enabled in that build.
- Consult that version’s documentation for the selected encoder’s bitrate and rate-control options, and determine how it configures a closed GOP and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Set output codec, resolution, frame rate, and video rate to the matching YouTube row. Configure audio separately if the stream contains audio.
- Use the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio; keep the key private. Select RTMPS when using YouTube’s recommended transport and the Studio-provided ingest details support it.
- Run a test stream and confirm the received resolution, frame rate, bitrate behavior, audio/video presence, and health before leaving an always-on broadcast running.
Test the connection and monitor stream health
First test upload reliability at the intended quality. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, then watching stream health and its review messages. For a continuous broadcast, use a representative sample rather than a brief static image alone: content with motion and audio can expose problems a quiet test misses.

During the test and after going live, inspect the stream health panel in YouTube Studio. The Live API also exposes stream state and health for integrations: active means data is being received, and health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. Its documentation distinguishes resolution and frame rate as stream properties; when automatic detection is requested, both must be set to variable. Most creators can use Studio’s health panel rather than the API. LiveStreams resource documentation
Troubleshoot common ingest warnings
YouTube’s health diagnostics can identify bitrate, GOP, codec, audio/video, backup-stream, and ingestion problems. Use the warning to narrow the check; do not assume changing bitrate will fix every fault.

| Health warning or symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Bitrate too high or too low | Compare the configured video rate with the selected codec/resolution/frame-rate recommendation, then check the actual health panel. Confirm the connection can sustain the intended stream rather than relying only on the configured value. |
| Long or overly short GOP; open GOP | Check the encoder’s actual keyframe/GOP behavior against the two-second target and four-second maximum. Confirm the GOP is closed if the diagnostic identifies an open GOP. |
| Video ingestion starvation | YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth playback. Check connection stability and whether the selected quality exceeds sustainable upload capacity; test a lower matching resolution or frame rate if needed. |
| Unsupported codec | Verify the output codec is one YouTube supports for live encoding and that FFmpeg is using the encoder you intended. |
| Missing audio or video; multiple audio/video streams | Inspect the output stream mapping and confirm the intended audio and video tracks are present without unwanted duplicate streams. |
| Backup-stream settings mismatch | Check that primary and backup stream settings agree where YouTube reports a mismatch. |
Copyright and continuous-stream eligibility
Bitrate and encoder compliance do not establish that you have permission to broadcast the material or that a channel meets YouTube’s rules for a live stream. Before running a continuous stream, verify rights for every recording, music track, and other included material, and check YouTube’s current live-stream requirements in Studio. A healthy ingest signal is a technical status, not a copyright or policy clearance.
