You can run a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube Live stream without a desktop by using FFmpeg on an always-on DigitalOcean Ubuntu Droplet. FFmpeg reads a video or playlist and sends it to YouTube’s ingest server; a process supervisor can restart it after a failure or reboot. The Droplet supplies the always-on host, but it does not create content or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A prepared video file or playlist that you have the rights to stream.
- An Ubuntu Droplet in a DigitalOcean region suitable for your operation and audience.
- FFmpeg, the YouTube server URL and stream key, and a Linux process supervisor.
This workflow sends a prepared media file directly from the server to YouTube Live. It does not need OBS, a desktop GUI, or an intermediate RTMP server. DigitalOcean’s Ubuntu 22.04 Nginx-RTMP tutorial demonstrates the FFmpeg file-source pattern and indefinite loop option, but its example is not a tested turnkey 24/7 YouTube deployment.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Use the ingest address YouTube supplies; do not substitute a local RTMP address from a different server tutorial.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or exposed log. If storing it in a configuration file, restrict file access to the account that runs FFmpeg.
- Start the encoder and check that YouTube receives the feed and displays a usable preview and stream-health information. For a scheduled stream, follow the separate Go Live action in Live Control Room when you are ready to broadcast.
YouTube’s setup guide documents the server URL and key workflow and notes that a scheduled stream may require a separate Go Live action: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Create and prepare the DigitalOcean Droplet
- Create an Ubuntu Droplet. Choose a region based on your operating location and audience; no specific Droplet size is established here as a guaranteed minimum.
- Connect to the server and install FFmpeg using the current package instructions for the Ubuntu version you selected.
- Place the media file on the server and confirm that the FFmpeg process can read it. For a playlist, test each item and its transitions before relying on unattended playback.
- Check CPU, memory, network use and YouTube stream health during a representative test. Resource needs depend on the media and encoding workload, so validate the actual setup rather than relying on a generic size recommendation.
DigitalOcean Droplet prices, a guaranteed minimum size, total 24/7 bandwidth costs and region-specific performance are not established here. Check current account pricing and measure the workload you intend to run.

Send a prerecorded file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a looping file, FFmpeg needs to read the input in real time, loop it, and send the output to the RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. DigitalOcean documents -stream_loop -1 as the option for looping a file indefinitely in its FFmpeg file-streaming example. That tutorial’s destination is an Nginx-RTMP server; adapt the destination to YouTube’s supplied URL and key rather than copying the tutorial’s local address.
There is no single verified command that can be guaranteed for every media file, YouTube ingest address and server configuration. Before building a service around a command, confirm the input’s codecs and container, the required output settings, and the exact destination format shown in your YouTube Studio stream settings. Keep the real key in a protected configuration mechanism rather than publishing it inline in a script.

For an initial test, launch FFmpeg in a terminal, then check the preview and health indicators in Live Control Room. Confirm that both picture and sound are present before making the process unattended. YouTube’s current ingest and encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Choose settings and test the stream
Match resolution and bitrate to the source and the server’s available upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast, choosing a reliable quality for the connection, and monitoring stream health while live. Its 2026 guidance lists the following platform recommendations and settings—not measured performance results:

| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 bitrate at 720p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended |
| H.264 bitrate at 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| RTMP/RTMPS video codecs | H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; up to 60 fps |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Audio codecs | AAC or MP3 |
| Transport | RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport |
These bitrate examples apply to H.264 at the stated resolution and frame rate; they are not a promise that a particular Droplet, source file or network path can sustain those settings. Check the latest YouTube encoder settings guidance when configuring your stream.
Make the stream restart after failure or reboot
A terminal session alone is not an unattended streaming plan. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor configured to start on boot and restart after an unexpected exit. On Linux, systemd is one possible choice, but the DigitalOcean tutorial cited above does not provide or validate a complete YouTube-specific systemd unit.

- Test that the supervisor starts FFmpeg after a server reboot.
- Test restart behavior after stopping or interrupting the encoder.
- Bound or rotate logs so they do not grow indefinitely, and set up monitoring or alerts for failures.
- Plan how you will update the operating system and change media files without leaving the stream in an unknown state.
- After each change, verify the received preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Studio.
Do not call the setup nonstop until you have tested reboot and restart behavior. Supervision can relaunch a process; it cannot guarantee that the server, network, source media or YouTube ingest will never fail.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete archive. If retaining the full program matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and arrange a separate recording plan.
Choose the simplest architecture that meets your needs
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube channel that needs an uploaded video or playlist to loop without administering a VPS. | Cloud-hosted service rather than a server you configure and control; streams to YouTube only. |
| FFmpeg directly to YouTube Live | A prepared file or playlist, minimal architecture, and comfort managing Linux processes. | Requires command-line setup, media and resource testing, key security, supervision and monitoring. |
| DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace stack | A need for a media-server layer, protocol bridging, recording, transcoding or restreaming features. | Adds another server and configuration layer, which is unnecessary for a simple direct FFmpeg push. DigitalOcean lists RTMP, SRT, HLS, WebRTC, FFmpeg transcoding, recording and multi-platform restreaming in its SRS listing; listing features and versions may change. |
| Hosted continuous-streaming service | A preference not to administer a VPS or process supervisor. | Compare the provider’s current features, availability, prices and terms. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud options, but their current commercial details are not established here. |
| OBS on a desktop | Live sources, camera input or interactive scene switching from a desktop production setup. | Does not meet a server-only, no-desktop requirement for a prerecorded loop. YouTube describes OBS as free and open source in its encoder guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not running, or live streaming not yet enabled. | Recheck the current URL and key in Studio, confirm FFmpeg is running, and allow for first-time activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours. |
| Stream starts but YouTube reports poor health | Bitrate or output quality exceeds what the source, server or upload path can sustain, or settings do not match YouTube’s guidance. | Test at a lower suitable quality, verify the codec and keyframe interval, and monitor stream health under representative audio and motion. |
| Video plays once and stops | The input was not configured to loop. | For a single file, verify the FFmpeg invocation uses the loop behavior you intend; DigitalOcean documents -stream_loop -1 for indefinite file looping. |
| Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong | Input audio track or output audio codec is absent or incompatible. | Inspect the media and output configuration; YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. |
| Stream stops after the server reboots or FFmpeg exits | No boot-enabled process supervisor, or its restart configuration is not working. | Test supervisor startup and restart behavior explicitly, then verify a fresh YouTube preview. |
| Key is exposed in a script, repository or log | Credential stored or displayed insecurely. | Restrict access to the secret, remove public copies, and replace the key in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed. |
