If a 24/7 YouTube livestream from your VPS appears stuck on one video, first find out which part of the chain has stopped: the source or playlist, the encoder, the VPS, YouTube ingestion, or a viewer’s playback. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that new video frames are reaching YouTube. Check each stage and YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings.
Why is my 24/7 YouTube live stream stuck on one video?
The visible symptom does not identify the cause. A playlist may have stopped advancing, an encoder may be stalled while its process remains active, the VPS may be unable to sustain the output, YouTube may be receiving an irregular feed, or the problem may affect only a viewer’s playback. YouTube’s Live API represents the incoming feed as a liveStream resource with status and health information, including issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, and starved video (LiveStreams resource; Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources).
Diagnose these stages separately and note the time each symptom occurs. If you have no source, encoder, host, or stream-health evidence from when the freeze happened, the root cause cannot be identified from the frozen picture alone.
How to diagnose a frozen stream from a VPS

Verify that the source or playlist advances
Confirm the intended input is playing and that the playlist has not ended, become stuck on one item, or started repeating an unintended item. Check that the file is not itself a still image or frozen decode. Record the last input timestamp before the symptom and whether it continues to advance afterward.

Inspect the encoder, not just the service status
Review FFmpeg or OBS logs around the freeze and check the process state. Look for an exited or repeatedly restarting process, read or decode errors, stalled output timestamps, encoder overload, and reconnect loops. A service manager reporting “active” is not evidence that the encoder is emitting frames to YouTube.

Check the stream’s health and record the exact message or issue code and its timestamp before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s

Compare the actual output with YouTube’s encoder guidance
Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The recommendations vary by codec and video format; a setting suitable for one resolution or frame rate is not automatically suitable for another.

Check sustained VPS egress and resource headroom
Compare actual sustained outbound throughput with the configured bitrate. Check for packet loss or disconnects, and inspect CPU use or encoder saturation and relevant host logs around the incident. An advertised network capacity does not establish that the VPS sustained the stream’s required output at the time of the freeze.

Change one setting and retest
After identifying evidence for a likely cause, adjust one relevant setting at a time. Test with movement and audio similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s health messages while it runs. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder guidance).
Encoder settings that can affect smooth playback
Use the current YouTube guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from another stream. The figures below are YouTube recommendations listed on its encoder settings page accessed on 2026-10-03; they are not guarantees that a particular VPS or network can sustain the output.

A live FFmpeg process can remain running while the source is stalled, the output timestamps stop advancing, or the host cannot deliver data steadily enough. YouTube’s videoIngestionStarved issue specifically identifies insufficient incoming video for smooth streaming; it is a useful ingestion signal, not by itself an explanation of whether the source, encoder, or network caused the shortfall.

OBS’s official connection guide says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or inability to keep up with the configured bitrate (Stream Connection Troubleshooting). That guidance is useful for understanding the network symptom, but OBS interface-specific instructions are not FFmpeg commands. On an FFmpeg VPS, inspect the encoder output, host metrics, and network evidence instead.
If YouTube reports healthy ingestion but viewers still see a freeze
If stream health is good and only some viewers report the problem, do not assume a universal encoder fix. Preserve the health status and timestamps, the live URL, and the affected viewer’s device, browser, and player details; note whether other viewers can reproduce the freeze. That evidence helps distinguish a viewer-side playback issue from a feed problem.
