You can stream videos stored in Backblaze B2 to YouTube Live by retrieving them through a B2 access path, feeding them in order to a media encoder, and configuring that encoder with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. B2 stores the files; it does not create or transmit the live program. The steps below describe the architecture and setup decisions. The official documentation cited here covers the component interfaces, but does not validate a particular end-to-end playlist command.
How the setup fits together
The practical chain is: B2 objects → retrieval or local staging → playlist and playback pipeline → encoder → YouTube Live. Each part has a separate job:
- Backblaze B2: stores the video and audio objects. The encoder needs a way to retrieve each item, either from staged local files or through a configured retrieval integration.
- Playlist pipeline: determines item order, repeat behavior, and what happens when an item cannot be retrieved or played.
- Encoder: produces a continuous audio-video feed and sends it to YouTube.
- YouTube Live: receives the feed at its ingestion endpoint using a stream key.
Backblaze’s S3-compatible API supports HTTPS endpoints by region, Signature Version 4, and object retrieval. Backblaze recommends that API for many new integrations that can use existing S3 tooling. See the B2 S3-compatible API documentation and B2 integration guide.
YouTube distinguishes the incoming feed, represented as a liveStream, from the viewer-facing event, represented as a liveBroadcast. A broadcast is bound to a stream. This distinction matters if you use YouTube’s API to manage or reuse stream configurations; see LiveStreams and Broadcasts and Streams.

Choose how the encoder gets B2 files
Option 1: Stage objects on the encoder host
Download the playlist files to storage available to the encoder, then have the playback process read local paths. This separates B2 retrieval from continuous playback and can make it easier to keep playing through a temporary B2 or network interruption, provided the needed files are already staged. It uses local disk space and requires a process to keep the staged playlist current.
Backblaze documents object downloads through its S3-compatible API and native download API. The native API’s download options are described at Download files with the Native API. The amount of local space needed depends on your media and staging policy; no universal figure is established here.

Option 2: Retrieve items as the playlist runs
An integration can fetch each object when needed, but the encoder must have a compatible retrieval path. Do not assume a media encoder can authenticate to a private B2 bucket just because it can read a URL. You may need an adapter, a signed access mechanism, or a separate downloader. Backblaze documents presigned downloads in its S3-compatible API material; whether your selected encoder can use them, and how it handles expiration, is vendor-specific.
Direct retrieval or staging?
| Consideration | Retrieve as needed | Stage locally |
|---|---|---|
| Startup | Playback depends on retrieval completing for the first item. | Playback can start after the required item or playlist has been downloaded. |
| Network and storage | Requires a working path to B2 during retrieval; local storage needs can be lower. | Uses local disk and requires downloads, but playback can use local files. |
| Private-object access | Requires an encoder-compatible authentication or retrieval mechanism. | Credentials can be confined to the downloader that stages objects, depending on your design. |
| Interruption recovery | Must account for failed or delayed retrievals during playback. | Already-staged files remain available locally, though new or refreshed items still require retrieval. |
These are architectural trade-offs, not measured performance results. Actual startup delay, bandwidth use, and recovery depend on your B2 region, network path, file sizes, and implementation.

Build and test playlist rotation
Use a playback pipeline that can maintain one continuous feed while advancing through your chosen objects. Define the playlist and failure behavior before relying on an unattended stream.
- Set an explicit order and decide whether the list repeats from the beginning, rotates on a schedule, or is updated by an operator.
- Decide how additions and removals reach the running process. Test whether it reads a refreshed list automatically or needs a restart.
- Check that every item’s container, video codec, audio codec, frame rate, and dimensions are compatible with the pipeline’s input and output settings. Mixed formats may need normalization before use.
- Choose what happens after a failed download, missing object, corrupt file, or unsupported format: retry, skip to the next item, or stop and alert an operator.
- Test transitions and gaps. A playlist can be ordered correctly yet still produce pauses or an interrupted feed if one item takes too long to open.
- Decide how the process resumes after a host restart and whether it should continue at the failed item or restart the playlist.
The official Backblaze and YouTube material cited here does not establish a specific FFmpeg command for indefinitely rotating private B2 objects, nor does it verify credential refresh, buffering, playlist updates, or reconnect behavior. Treat those as implementation-specific: choose an encoder and retrieval layer, then validate the complete workflow using your actual file formats and access settings before leaving it unattended.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Set up the YouTube live event and stream. In YouTube’s live control workflow, create or select the broadcast and its associated stream. If you manage live resources through the API, remember that the broadcast and stream are separate resources bound together.
- Copy the ingestion details into the encoder. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Use the current server URL and key shown for your stream; do not place the key in a public playlist, web page, or log that others can access. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Use secure ingestion where supported. YouTube documents RTMPS ingestion on port 443. Select the RTMPS server URL if it is available in your YouTube setup and supported by your encoder. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
- Start with a short representative test. Confirm the encoder is sending a feed, YouTube reports stream health, audio and video are present, and the playlist advances as intended before using the setup for a long-running broadcast.
YouTube’s API stream resource exposes ingestion details and health/status information. Monitor both the encoder logs and YouTube’s health indicators; neither documentation set promises uninterrupted service for a particular B2-to-YouTube arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Software encoder or dedicated hardware?
A software encoder on an existing computer can fill the encoder role; dedicated hardware is optional. Choose based on supported input formats and codecs, whether the device can run unattended, and what recovery and monitoring it offers. The available official guidance establishes YouTube’s need for an encoder, but does not establish that any particular encoder can fetch private B2 objects directly. If you choose hardware, confirm how its inputs receive the files and whether it can work with your chosen staging or retrieval layer.

Keep the stream manageable over time
- Protect access credentials. Keep the YouTube stream key private. Restrict B2 credentials to the access the downloader needs, and avoid embedding long-lived secrets in public playlists or files.
- Monitor both sides. Watch retrieval errors and encoder logs as well as YouTube stream health. A healthy B2 download does not prove the encoder is producing a valid feed; a healthy encoder process does not prove YouTube is receiving it.
- Plan for interruptions. Test what happens if B2 retrieval, the local network, the encoder, or YouTube ingestion drops. Reconnection and playlist-resume behavior depend on your chosen software or device and should be verified rather than assumed.
- Review YouTube rules. You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream every item and for complying with YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies. A playlist being stored in your B2 bucket does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Reused or repetitive programming may also raise policy and monetization questions; review current YouTube guidance for your channel and content.
- Check archive expectations. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Confirm the current policy and archive behavior in YouTube Help before planning around saved broadcasts.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot open a B2 object | Retrieval or authentication | Confirm the endpoint and region, object name, permissions, and whether the encoder can use the selected authentication method. If it cannot, use a configured downloader or compatible integration. |
| The first item plays but the next does not | Playlist handling or input compatibility | Check the list order, object availability, next-item retrieval, and whether the following file’s container and codecs are supported. |
| Playback pauses between objects | Retrieval latency or transitions | Determine whether the pipeline waits for downloads or reinitializes between items. Test local staging or a buffering strategy appropriate to your chosen encoder. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Ingestion configuration | Check the current server URL, stream key, RTMPS support and port 443 connectivity, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and encoder logs. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | Long-run recovery | Look for expired access, failed downloads, process exits, network interruption, or YouTube disconnects. Confirm that retries and restarts behave as intended; the platform component documentation does not specify your encoder’s recovery behavior. |
| A scheduled broadcast is not paired with the expected feed | YouTube resource selection | Verify that the intended liveBroadcast is bound to the intended liveStream, especially if you manage these resources through the API. |
