The server can stay online without a home computer, but Hetzner provides the virtual machine—not a ready-made playlist-looping workflow. You must choose, configure and monitor an encoder, and validate its playlist and restart behavior before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. The channel must also meet YouTube’s age and policy requirements. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- A video or playlist you have the rights to stream. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; a playlist being available to you does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- A Hetzner Cloud account, a server plan with enough resources for your chosen encoder, and a working internet connection from that server.
- An encoder that can play the intended playlist continuously, publish to YouTube Live, and recover appropriately after errors. The exact package, looping command and restart setup depend on the encoder you select; the official YouTube and Hetzner material cited here does not validate a particular implementation.
Create and budget for the Hetzner server
Hetzner Cloud servers are virtual machines. In the Hetzner Cloud Console, create a server and select a plan, location and operating-system image. Enable public networking if the encoder needs direct internet access. Configure an optional firewall and storage volume only as your workload requires. Hetzner says a server can be resized, but check plan availability and the implications for your selected server before changing it. See Hetzner’s Cloud server overview.
Before creating a server, compare the encoder’s CPU, memory and storage needs with the current plans. Also check the included outgoing traffic for the specific plan and location: Hetzner’s traffic information distinguishes Cloud product families and locations. Its pricing documentation records a price adjustment effective June 15, 2026, so use the live Hetzner Cloud pricing page and traffic documentation rather than relying on an old estimate. Prices, traffic allowances, currency and tax treatment can vary. Hetzner states that servers continue to be billed until deleted, even if powered off.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event and choose the stream settings appropriate to your channel. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions explain how to connect encoder software. Copy the stream key from the event settings and enter it only in the encoder’s stream destination. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Set up the playlist in the encoder. Configure the selected encoder to play the videos in the intended order and repeat them, if that behavior is supported. Follow that encoder’s current official documentation for playlist syntax, output format and restart handling. Do not assume that YouTube or Hetzner supplies a playlist loop automatically.
- Choose an ingestion protocol the encoder supports. YouTube supports encoder streaming. If you specifically configure HLS ingestion, YouTube’s requirements include HTTPS, transport stream segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are HLS-specific requirements, not general settings for every encoder; YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Check the current YouTube HLS ingestion guidance before applying these values.
- Keep enough network headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total streaming bitrate. For example, if the encoder’s total output bitrate is 10 Mbps, provision at least 12 Mbps of sustained upload capacity as a planning target. This is headroom guidance, not a guarantee of stable delivery; measure the server’s actual outbound path and allow for variability.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Check the YouTube preview, confirm the event’s audience/access setting, and verify that both video and audio are working before making the broadcast public.
Validate continuous playback and monitor it
A successful initial connection does not prove that a playlist will loop indefinitely. Test the full sequence, including the transition from its last item back to the first, and observe the stream for long enough to catch failures relevant to your use case. Separately verify what the encoder does when a source file is unavailable, the process exits, the server reboots, or YouTube disconnects it. Configure restart and alerting behavior using the chosen encoder’s authoritative documentation; no single restart command can be recommended without knowing that implementation.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube recommends checking the event preview, confirming that viewers can access the event, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Keep an operator able to inspect the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; that is a viewer playback limitation, not evidence that the encoder must stop at 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream DVR guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, live-streaming eligibility and any restrictions. If enabling live streaming for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder output: Check that the event is active, the encoder is using the correct stream key and destination, and the server has working outbound connectivity. If you changed or reset the key, update the encoder.
- The stream buffers or drops: Compare sustained server upload capacity with the encoder’s total bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the selected Hetzner plan and location’s traffic terms as well as network performance.
- The playlist stops or fails to repeat: This is an encoder configuration or process-management issue, not a setting supplied by Hetzner Cloud. Check the selected encoder’s playlist and error-handling documentation, then test the sequence from end to end.
- HLS ingest is unstable or has unexpected delay: Confirm the HLS-specific HTTPS, segment-duration and rolling-playlist constraints in YouTube’s current HLS guidance. HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
- The server is powered off but costs continue: Hetzner says billing continues until the server is deleted. Review the active server and associated resources in the Console if you intend to stop incurring charges.
When to use a hosted encoder instead
A self-managed Hetzner VM gives you control over the server and encoder, but you are responsible for selecting and maintaining the playlist software, monitoring the process and validating recovery. If you prefer not to administer a VM, YouTube’s encoder list includes hosted options, including Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream.so as a 24/7 cloud studio. Check each provider’s current documentation and terms to confirm that its workflow, recovery behavior and costs fit your needs.
