Can a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W Run a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube Stream?

A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can plausibly encode and stream H.264 to YouTube, but a stable 24/7 FFmpeg setup depends on the hardware path, workload, network, and a tested recovery plan.

Yes, conditionally: the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can encode H.264 video up to 1080p30, and Raspberry Pi documents a camera workflow where the FFmpeg/libav backend uses hardware H.264 encoding when available. But those capabilities do not prove that a particular FFmpeg setup can run unattended around the clock. Treat 24/7 operation as something to test and engineer for—not a guaranteed result.

What the Zero 2 W can—and cannot—tell you

Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2024 product brief lists a 1 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A53, 512 MB of LPDDR2 memory, and H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. The board also has 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. These are published hardware specifications, not results from a sustained-load test of FFmpeg or a complete YouTube streaming setup. Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W specifications.

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes rpicam-vid using the FFmpeg/libav backend to encode and stream audio and video; it says libav uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. That does not certify every generic FFmpeg command, camera, filter chain, or audio setup. Verify that your actual input and software build use the intended hardware path. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

The distinction matters: a board’s ability to encode H.264 is not the same as proof that the whole pipeline—capture, encoding, audio, filters, network transmission, and recovery—will stay healthy 24 hours a day.

Choose a workflow that fits the Pi

Forward an already encoded H.264 stream when possible

If your camera or source can supply H.264, avoid decoding and re-encoding it without a reason. Unnecessary processing can add work to a board with only 512 MB of memory. If the Pi must encode camera frames, favor the documented hardware H.264 route where your camera software and build support it; do not assume that installing FFmpeg alone enables hardware encoding.

Keep extra processing modest

Overlays, scaling, filters, audio mixing, local recording, and simultaneous encoding can all change the workload. Start with the simplest pipeline that meets your needs. Add one extra operation at a time and observe whether the Pi and YouTube ingest remain stable. The available official sources do not publish comparative Zero 2 W benchmarks for these combinations.

Use a dependable physical setup

The board has a microSD slot. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and lists a 5 V, 2.5 A supply for Zero models in its setup guidance. Recording locally, retaining logs, or adding overlays may increase storage and resource needs; account for those separately. Raspberry Pi setup guidance.

Set YouTube ingest targets, then test your pipeline

For H.264, YouTube Help recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. Its general recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with a recommended audio bitrate of 128 Kbps. YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS as the encrypted option. These are platform recommendations, not proof that the Pi can sustain a particular configuration. • Orange Pi Single Board Computers is open source.
  • Resolution and frame rate: 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 3 Mbps is a sensible first test target; try 1080p30 only if your complete setup keeps up. The Pi’s published H.264 ceiling is 1080p30, not a guarantee of sustained performance with your chosen software.
  • Bitrate: measure your upload capacity and leave room for fluctuations. The Zero 2 W’s Wi-Fi specification does not establish the performance of your access point or internet connection.
  • Keyframes and audio: configure the encoder to match YouTube’s recommendations where your tool exposes those settings. Check the outgoing stream rather than assuming the software’s defaults are suitable.
  • Protocol and stream key: use the RTMPS ingest option when available, and enter the YouTube stream key into your streaming setup without sharing it. A leaked key can let someone else broadcast to your channel; if exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.

YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitor stream health during operation. YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Build a real 24/7 test and recovery plan

Before leaving the stream unattended, test the assembled system for a meaningful period with its actual camera, audio, filters, resolution, bitrate, power supply, Wi-Fi access point, and internet connection. A brief successful broadcast cannot establish day-and-night reliability. No official source cited here reports a Zero 2 W FFmpeg 24/7 uptime result.

Orange Pi Zero 2W supports Android 12 TV, Debian11, Debian12, Ubuntu22.04, Ubuntu20.04 ,Orange Pi OS(Arch)and other operating systems.

During the test, watch for dropped frames and YouTube stream-health warnings. Also check the Pi’s CPU load, temperature, memory pressure, and network stability. These measurements help identify bottlenecks; they are not themselves evidence of a guaranteed runtime. If changing one setting, repeat the test under comparable conditions so you can tell whether the change helped.

Plan for interruption rather than assuming it will not happen. Decide how the FFmpeg process will be restarted after a crash, what should happen after a Wi-Fi or power outage, and how you will know the stream stopped. Restart behavior and monitoring must be configured by the operator; the cited camera and YouTube documentation does not establish a built-in 24/7 recovery mechanism for a Zero 2 W FFmpeg setup.

Troubleshoot common failure points

  • Encoding overload or dropped frames: reduce resolution or frame rate, remove nonessential filters, and confirm that the intended hardware encoding path is actually active. If the input is already H.264, avoid needless re-encoding.
  • YouTube reports a bitrate or keyframe problem: check the encoder’s actual output settings against YouTube’s H.264 guidance: CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds, with the recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate.
  • Stream health varies or the connection drops: run an upload speed test, reduce the target bitrate if capacity is insufficient, and investigate Wi-Fi stability. A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection is a board specification, not a guarantee of a reliable route to YouTube.
  • No audio, distorted audio, or ingest warnings: verify that audio is present in the outgoing stream and check the codec, stereo channels, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations. Confirm that your pipeline is not adding unnecessary audio processing.
  • The stream stops when the process or power fails: check the power supply and configure an operator-managed restart and alerting plan. A restart can restore the process, but it does not prevent the original failure or prove continuous uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud
