You can send a video file from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg if your exact NAS, DSM release and FFmpeg build support the required codecs and RTMPS connection. The basic workflow is to prepare a YouTube live event, run FFmpeg in real time against YouTube’s current ingest URL and private stream key, then verify the stream in Live Control Room. Synology compatibility and encoding capacity vary by model, so test the full setup before relying on it.

Before you begin: check the Synology NAS

Synology does not have one universal FFmpeg setup that applies to every NAS and DSM release. First check whether your exact model and installed DSM version can run an FFmpeg build that supports your media, the required output format and RTMPS. A container is one possible packaging route where Container Manager is available, but support depends on the model, CPU architecture and selected image.

Compare a native or binary installation with a container using these practical checks:

  • Availability: Is the installation route supported on this exact NAS and DSM release?
  • Architecture and codecs: Does the build match the NAS CPU architecture and include the encoders and protocols required for your source and YouTube output?
  • Media access: Can FFmpeg read the chosen video path without exposing more NAS files than necessary?
  • Key security and operations: Can you keep the stream key private and arrange useful restart behavior and logs?
  • Sustained capacity: Can the NAS encode the selected resolution and frame rate continuously without falling behind? Measure this on the device; model names alone do not establish performance.

Do not assume a particular package, container image or real-time encoding limit is compatible until you verify it for your hardware and software.

Prepare the YouTube Live event and stream key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the current ingest URL and stream key provided for that event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots or share command logs that expose it.
  3. Use the values for the actual event rather than an example endpoint. YouTube’s Live API allows the ingestion URL and stream name to be entered separately or together as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; the current values supplied for your stream are authoritative.
  4. Choose RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live streaming, and its guidance specifies port 443 and hostname/SNI requirements. Use the current RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides.

Choose a configuration that fits the source and connection

For a conservative SDR setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are a practical baseline. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio, but support in your local FFmpeg build and compatibility with your source must be confirmed. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no interval longer than four seconds. Match the frame rate and GOP length: at 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds; at 60 fps, use 120 frames for the same interval.

YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists these H.264 ingestion bitrates. The minimum and recommended values are YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a NAS can encode at that rate. Check measured upload capacity and leave reliable headroom.

Output Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder settings, reviewed 2026-10-03. The appropriate rate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; it is not a universal setting. If the NAS cannot keep up, lower the resolution or frame rate, or consider stream copy only if the source codecs and container are suitable for the YouTube output.

Run FFmpeg from the NAS

FFmpeg documents a real-time streaming pattern using -re, an FLV output and an RTMP-family destination. For an endlessly repeated file, its -stream_loop -1 input option loops indefinitely. The following illustrative command shows the shape for an H.264/AAC transcode; it is not a tested Synology command. It assumes 30 fps, an FFmpeg build with libx264, AAC encoding, FLV muxing and RTMPS support, and a YouTube-compatible endpoint:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the input path and destination with your actual file and the current YouTube values. The example’s 5000k target is illustrative, not a recommended bitrate for every video; select a suitable rate from YouTube’s guidance and your measured upload. Its 60-frame GOP assumes 30 fps. Adjust GOP, frame rate, bitrate, resolution and audio options to the source and event. Do not paste the placeholder destination literally, and do not expose the real key in shared output or public scripts.

Check what your FFmpeg build actually supports before starting. In particular, confirm the video and audio encoders, FLV output and RTMPS/TLS support. YouTube’s live encoder guidance advises testing upload capacity and selecting a reliable bitrate, and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

Test and confirm the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg with the event’s current ingest values and check its output for connection or encoding errors.
  2. In Live Control Room, verify that YouTube is receiving the stream and review stream health and any warnings before making the event public.
  3. Test with representative audio and movement, not just a silent or static sample. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  4. Confirm that the broadcast itself is configured and started in Live Control Room. Sending media with FFmpeg and starting the audience-facing YouTube broadcast are distinct steps.
  5. Monitor the NAS and YouTube stream health throughout a trial run long enough to reveal sustained encoding or network problems.

YouTube’s stream resource can report states such as active, inactive or error, with configuration issues that may include low bitrate, unsupported audio codec or an excessively long keyframe interval. Use the actual warning to guide the adjustment rather than changing settings at random.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube receives no video

Recheck that the ingest URL and stream key came from the selected, current Live Control Room event and that FFmpeg is sending to the full correct destination. Also confirm that the broadcast is started in Live Control Room; a running FFmpeg process alone does not establish that the audience-facing event is live.

Connection times out or TLS fails

Verify that the destination is the YouTube-provided RTMPS endpoint, outbound port 443 is reachable, and the local FFmpeg build handles TLS and hostname/SNI requirements. Google’s implementation guidance warns that attempting cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint can time out. If the build cannot connect securely, use a compatible build and the current endpoint rather than silently switching to a mismatched destination.

YouTube reports stream-health warnings

Use the specific diagnostic. Low or high bitrate calls for checking the target against the source, YouTube’s guidance and measured upload; an unsupported audio codec or sample-rate problem calls for checking the audio encoder and sample rate; a keyframe warning calls for correcting the GOP interval. YouTube’s current guidance recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.

The NAS drops frames or cannot sustain the stream

Encoding capacity depends on the NAS hardware, FFmpeg build, source and settings; no general performance figure applies to every Synology device. Reduce resolution or frame rate and test again. Stream copy can avoid re-encoding only when the source codecs and container are appropriate for the required output. If you use a container, also check resource limits and whether its image has the necessary codec and protocol support.

The file loops but the live event ends

Check the event’s configuration and start state in Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s media-delivery process and YouTube’s broadcast are separate resources, so looping input does not by itself start or maintain the audience-facing broadcast.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

A stream key and technically healthy signal do not grant permission to broadcast a video. Before streaming a documentary or other recording, confirm you have the rights or a valid licence for the video, music and other included material. YouTube may detect copyrighted content in a live stream; its copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg can connect. Review YouTube’s current rules and use the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a repeat or long-running broadcast.

Likewise, looping a recording does not automatically make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube evaluates channel content under its monetization policies, including whether content is sufficiently original and adds value; technical streaming setup is not a substitute for meeting those rules. Check YouTube’s current policy for your channel and content before relying on revenue from a stream.
