To switch scenes during a YouTube playlist in OBS, create a scene for each layout, add the playlist to a VLC Video source, then switch scenes with hotkeys or an authenticated OBS WebSocket automation client. Scene switching changes what OBS sends; it does not schedule or restart the YouTube broadcast. A true 24/7 setup also depends on the computer, media files, and internet connection staying available.
Choose the right kind of switching
First decide whether a person will operate the broadcast or scenes must change without one. These options do different jobs:

OBS WebSocket is included in OBS Studio 28 and later, according to the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide. Enable authentication and keep its password private. Hotkeys are the straightforward choice when someone is at the controls; use WebSocket when an external tool needs to control scenes.
Build scenes and add the playlist
1. Create scenes for the states viewers need
In OBS, create separately named scenes for each distinct on-air view—for example, the main playlist, a holding screen, and a break or information screen. Scenes can combine video, images, text, capture, and other sources. OBS notes that scene and source names share a global namespace, so use distinct names rather than giving a scene and source the same name. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

2. Add a VLC Video source and set its playback behavior
- Install VLC before configuring the source. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- In the scene that should play the videos, add a VLC Video source and add the local media files in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a deterministic sequence. Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback after the last item.
- Check the source’s Visibility Behaviour settings. OBS documents options that can stop or restart playback when a source is hidden; media may also take a short time to resume when it becomes visible again.
- Test switching away from and back to the playlist scene. Confirm whether playback continues or restarts as intended, and verify every file path is accessible to the computer running OBS.
Use the VLC Video source for a multi-file playlist; it is different from OBS’s ordinary Media Source. A scene switch can hide the playlist source, so its visibility behavior determines whether it continues, stops, or starts over.
Switch scenes manually or automate them
Manual switching with hotkeys
- Open Settings > Hotkeys in OBS.
- Find the command to switch to each named scene and assign a different key combination to each one.
- Apply the settings and test every key while watching the live output preview. Avoid combinations used by other applications or routine typing.
If you use Studio Mode, prepare the next scene in the preview pane, then use the configured transition to take it live. This lets an operator check a layout before viewers see it. Scene hotkeys control the scene, not the YouTube broadcast’s start or end.

Unattended changes with WebSocket
For time- or condition-based switching, connect an external client or custom integration to OBS WebSocket. Configure the client to select the intended scene, then test the complete sequence—including what happens if OBS or the client restarts. Enable WebSocket authentication and protect the password. The OBS guide documents compatible clients, but the exact scheduling steps depend on the client you choose; there is no single universal macro or schedule described by OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube and verify the broadcast
- In YouTube’s Live Control Room, create or open the broadcast and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a public scene or recording.
- Start sending from OBS, then check YouTube’s incoming preview and broadcast status before relying on the stream.
- If this is your first time enabling YouTube live streaming, allow for activation to take up to 24 hours, as stated in YouTube Help’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guidance.
OBS controls the encoded output and its scene composition. YouTube controls the broadcast lifecycle. Switching to a holding screen does not itself stop, restart, or schedule the YouTube live event.

Prepare the setup for continuous operation
- Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS says it considers intended use, computer resources, and network conditions; it does not guarantee stable 24/7 operation.
- Test the actual scene collection, playlist files, encoder, and upload connection under realistic conditions before leaving the broadcast unattended. The sources do not establish universal computer specifications, upload bitrate, or network design for every setup.
- Back up both the OBS Profile and Scene Collection. Profiles save stream, video, and output settings; Scene Collections save scenes. One does not replace the other.
- Check media paths and visibility behavior after any scene, file, or computer change. A playlist that points to files unavailable on the running machine cannot play them.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers the Auto-Configuration Wizard and initial setup. Use it to establish a baseline, then validate the full configuration rather than assuming a wizard result guarantees a continuous broadcast.
Plan for YouTube archives and stream recovery
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The page does not establish that a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours will have a complete archive. If a complete archive is important, plan shorter broadcast segments and verify YouTube’s current behavior rather than treating one 24/7 event as a guaranteed recording.

A community resource listing for the third-party Live Stream Segmenter describes automation intended to keep streams under 12 hours. The listing gives version 1.1.4, published 2026-01-13; that is a listed plugin version and date, not evidence of guaranteed reliability. Before depending on it, check supported OBS versions, API permissions, maintenance, and how it handles failures. YouTube’s archive guidance establishes the under-12-hour rule, not the plugin’s performance.

- A hotkey does nothing: Check Settings > Hotkeys for the right scene and key combination, then test for a conflicting shortcut or a key press reaching another application.
- The playlist stops or starts over after a scene change: Inspect the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour settings. Test the chosen behavior by hiding and showing the source.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. If the order matters, confirm Shuffle Playlist is off and the files are listed in the intended sequence.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not behave as expected: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A video is missing: Check that its path is valid and the file is available on the computer running OBS.
- WebSocket control is exposed or fails to connect: Enable authentication, keep the password private, and check the external client’s connection settings and compatibility.
- YouTube has no incoming preview: Check that OBS is sending to the stream URL with the correct, private stream key; also confirm the broadcast status in Live Control Room.
- The first broadcast cannot be enabled immediately: YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The archive is incomplete or absent for a long continuous broadcast: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume one longer continuous event will produce a complete archive.
