Best FFmpeg Bitrate for 720p Bhajan Videos in a YouTube 24/7 Stream

A practical 5 Mbps starting point for 720p30 bhajan streams, with YouTube’s bitrate range, FFmpeg settings, testing advice, and troubleshooting.

For a 720p, 30 fps H.264 YouTube live stream, start with a video bitrate of 5,000 kbps. That is a practical starting point within YouTube’s published 3–8 Mbps recommended range for 720p30—not a bitrate YouTube specifically prescribes for bhajans or 24/7 broadcasts. Use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and make sure your sustained upload can carry the video and audio reliably.

Recommended FFmpeg bitrate and YouTube ingest settings

YouTube’s current live-ingestion guidance, retrieved on October 3, 2026, lists a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate for H.264 at 720p30. A 5 Mbps target is a reasonable first setting within that range. YouTube does not set a separate bitrate for devotional music, still imagery, or continuous streams.

Setting Starting value for this stream Qualification
Resolution and frame rate 1280 Ă— 720 at 30 fps Keep the recommendation matched to the actual frame rate; YouTube lists the same bitrate bounds for 720p60, but that is a different frame-rate case.
Video codec and bitrate H.264; 5,000 kbps target 5,000 kbps is an editorial starting point. YouTube’s published 720p30 H.264 figures are 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoder settings.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second GOP is 60 frames.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS Use the protocol supported by the encoder and configured in YouTube’s live destination.

These are YouTube live-ingestion settings, not recommendations for uploading a finished video file. Encoder behavior varies with FFmpeg’s chosen encoder and its options, so a bitrate flag alone does not guarantee true CBR output.

Set the bitrate to match your video and connection

Start at 5 Mbps for a typical 720p30 stream

For a mostly static devotional image with an audio track, 5 Mbps is a sensible initial target, but it is not a genre-specific optimum. Compare 3, 5, and 8 Mbps with the same codec, resolution, and frame rate. Look at picture quality and stream health on your actual setup rather than assuming that a higher number is automatically better.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a lower or higher point based on evidence

  • If the internet connection’s sustained upload is limited or variable, try a lower video target within YouTube’s published range and test whether the stream remains stable.
  • If the video has considerable movement or fine detail, compare a higher target within the range, provided the upload connection has reliable headroom.
  • Include audio bitrate as well as video bitrate when estimating the required upload capacity. Leave capacity for normal network variation rather than planning to use every available bit.

YouTube’s bitrate range is guidance for ingest, not a promise that a particular connection, encoder, or 24-hour run will stay uninterrupted.

Translate the settings into FFmpeg options

For 720p30 H.264, -b:v 5000k expresses the 5,000 kbps target, and -g 60 expresses a 60-frame GOP—two seconds at 30 fps. Use an encoder configuration that implements CBR in the way YouTube expects. These options illustrate the target; they are not a tested, universal FFmpeg command or preset. FFmpeg’s rate-control details depend on the encoder and its configuration.

  1. Confirm the source frame rate. Use the actual output frame rate when calculating GOP length: for a two-second interval, set the GOP to twice the frames per second.
  2. Configure the selected H.264 encoder for CBR. Check that encoder’s documentation for the appropriate rate-control options; do not assume that setting only -b:v enforces CBR.
  3. Set the video target and keyframe interval. Start at 5,000 kbps and a two-second interval for 30 fps, then verify the encoder’s output.
  4. Configure audio separately. Use AAC or MP3, and for stereo use YouTube’s recommended 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz.
  5. Send the stream to the YouTube ingest destination. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the key assigned to the intended live destination and do not share or publish it.
  6. Test before relying on the stream. Confirm the outgoing stream’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate behavior, keyframes, audio, and YouTube stream health.

Test a 24/7 stream before leaving it running

YouTube advises testing before the live event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health during the event. For a continuous bhajan channel, test the actual playlist or recording, audio levels, encoder settings, network path, and the process that will keep FFmpeg running. A short successful test can catch configuration problems, but it cannot establish that a setup will operate reliably for every future 24-hour period.

  • Check that the video is truly 720p at the intended frame rate and that audio plays without clipping, silence, or synchronization problems.
  • Observe YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the test runs; reduce the target if the connection cannot sustain it consistently.
  • For an extended run, watch for encoder overload, network interruptions, and source-file or playlist endings. A bitrate choice by itself does not restart a process or recover a dropped connection.
  • Before broadcasting devotional recordings, confirm that you have the necessary rights to both the audio and visuals. YouTube’s live settings include rights-management controls, but those controls do not establish that a particular recording is cleared for use.

Common bitrate and stream problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check or change
Repeated buffering or poor stream health The sustained upload path cannot reliably carry the configured stream, or the connection is fluctuating. Test at a lower video target within YouTube’s range, account for audio bitrate, and monitor the connection and YouTube stream health.
Picture quality is weaker than expected The target may be too low for the material, or the encoder may not be producing the intended output. Compare quality at 3, 5, and 8 Mbps with other settings held constant; inspect the outgoing stream and verify encoder configuration.
YouTube reports keyframe or encoder-setting warnings The encoded stream may not match the intended keyframe interval, frame rate, or rate-control setup. Verify the actual output. For 30 fps, a two-second GOP corresponds to 60 frames; YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync Audio encoding, source levels, or synchronization may be misconfigured. Check the audio codec, sample rate, stereo bitrate, source levels, and sync during a test using the intended recording.
The stream stops when the source ends or FFmpeg exits The local streaming process or input has ended; bitrate settings do not provide process supervision or recovery. Check the input and the mechanism used to keep the process running, and test recovery behavior before depending on an unattended broadcast.
