To send a Hindi video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg, configure a live HLS ingest—not a static VOD playlist. YouTube provides an HTTPS ingest URL in Live Control Room; the encoder must send it short MPEG-TS segments and an updating media playlist. Hindi itself calls for no special container or codec setting. The relevant requirements are YouTube’s HLS protocol and the audio and video you are sending.
Understand the format: live HLS is not a VOD playlist
A local .m3u8 file and a folder of .ts segments are not, by themselves, a YouTube Live stream. Live HLS is an upload protocol: an encoder sends media segments and updates a media playlist to the HTTPS endpoint generated for the stream. YouTube’s setup guidance covers the endpoint and encoder settings in Set up an HLS stream; the protocol details are in the YouTube Live Streaming API HLS ingestion guide.
The program language does not alter those ingest requirements. Keep the Hindi audio as the program audio and encode it to the supported format described below. Captions, if needed, are a separate consideration from spoken audio.
Configure YouTube Live for HLS
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and set up the live stream in Live Control Room.
- Choose HLS as the stream protocol. Use the HTTPS stream URL YouTube generates for that stream. Do not substitute a URL for a different protocol or copy a stream key into a public command, post, or screenshot.
- Keep the URL and stream key private. YouTube’s HLS URL includes credentials that identify the stream. If they are exposed, replace or reset them through the stream controls before using the stream again.
- Use one encoded audio-and-video stream at the resolution you intend to send. YouTube accepts media playlists for HLS ingest and ignores master playlists, so do not send a master playlist with multiple quality variants as the ingest playlist.
Required media and encoder settings

YouTube Help recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 Kbps for stereo; for 5.1 it recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Those are audio recommendations, not settings specific to Hindi. The API’s HLS media requirement is more specific: one AAC track.

Choose segment length and codec deliberately
Segment duration
YouTube recommends segments of 1–4 seconds and prohibits segments longer than 5 seconds. Shorter segments can reduce latency, but YouTube notes they may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. There is no single best duration for every stream; choose within the documented range and validate actual ingest behavior for your setup.
H.264 or HEVC
YouTube’s HLS guidance supports H.264 and HEVC. HEVC may offer 25%–50% more compression than H.264 at the same quality according to the API guide, but that is not a guaranteed bitrate reduction for a particular video. Prefer H.264 when embedded 608/708 captions are required: the guide says those embedded captions work with H.264, not HEVC. YouTube describes separate caption POST requests for HLS ingestions.

Why a generic FFmpeg command is not enough
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer exposes controls for segment type, target duration, playlist size, and HTTP method, including -hls_segment_type mpegts, -hls_time, -hls_list_size, and -method PUT. Its documentation explains those muxer options and gives generic HTTP output examples in the FFmpeg formats documentation.
Those options do not establish that an arbitrary command implements YouTube’s full ingest protocol. YouTube specifies segment naming and sequence behavior, playlist updates, acknowledgements, HTTP responses, and limits on outstanding segments. A command that creates a local playlist or uploads files to a generic HTTP server is not automatically compatible with the YouTube endpoint. Therefore, there is no safe, universally valid copy-and-paste FFmpeg command to provide without verifying its request sequence against the current protocol and the specific generated stream URL.

If you build an FFmpeg-based sender, check its implementation against YouTube’s protocol guide—not just whether it produces a playable local HLS package. Confirm that it sends MPEG-TS segments over HTTPS, updates the media playlist for each segment, respects the segment and outstanding-request limits, handles YouTube responses, and uses the generated URL correctly. Never publish a real stream URL or key in a command example.
Hindi audio and captions
Hindi speech, music, or narration is simply the program audio; the documented ingest rules do not prescribe a Hindi-specific codec. For the API’s HLS media requirements, use one AAC track. If your video has multiple language tracks, select the intended Hindi track before encoding rather than sending multiple audio tracks in the ingest.

Captions are distinct from audio. The API guide allows captions to be sent through separate HTTP POST requests for HLS ingestions. Embedded 608/708 captions are supported with H.264 but not HEVC. Do not assume that an FFmpeg WebVTT subtitle rendition in a master playlist will be accepted as a YouTube Live ingest caption track: YouTube ignores master playlists for this purpose.

Also consider whether the content is appropriate for your channel and whether it complies with YouTube’s live-streaming policies. Encoding a prerecorded program as a live stream does not change the underlying rights or policy obligations.
Troubleshoot common HLS ingest problems
