The dependable starting point is to configure OBS interactively, then launch it automatically in the same user’s graphical desktop session. A service that starts before login may fail if it has no access to a display.
Choose the right meaning of “background service”
If you want the stream to resume automatically after you log in, use your desktop session’s startup mechanism to launch OBS as your regular Ubuntu user. That fits OBS’s Linux requirement for an X window system or Wayland. A conventional system service that starts before anyone logs in is a different deployment: do not assume it can render without a graphical display.
OBS’s system-requirements page also specifies an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and cautions that meeting the requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record. See the OBS system requirements.
- Desktop-session startup: the practical choice for an Ubuntu machine with a graphical desktop. It still depends on login/session behavior, display access, and the user’s media and audio permissions.
- Headless server or pre-login daemon: not established as a generally supported OBS Linux workflow by the cited OBS documentation. Validate the specific display stack, package, audio setup, and session persistence before relying on it.
Install OBS and prepare the Ubuntu user account
Install OBS using the method appropriate for your Ubuntu release and package source. OBS’s official Linux installation article, published in 2021, gives PPA and apt instructions and names Ubuntu 18.04 or newer; that historical threshold is not a guarantee that the same instructions or package status are current for every release. Check the current OBS Linux installation page and your distribution’s package information before following version-specific commands.

- Sign in to the Ubuntu desktop as the account that should run the stream.
- Open OBS interactively once and complete the initial setup. Confirm that the user can read the video files and any playlist entries from their permanent locations.
- Configure the scene, looping source, YouTube connection, and output settings described below. Start a short test stream manually before setting up automatic launch.
Set up a single looping video or a playlist
One video: Media Source
- In OBS, select or create the scene for the stream.
- In the Sources dock, choose + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local media file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Check the OBS preview and listen to the audio. Let the video reach its end and confirm that playback begins again.
OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The source’s Loop property repeats a file when it finishes. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.
Several videos: VLC Video source
- Install VLC if the VLC Video source is not available in OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source and create or select the playlist of local files.
- Enable Loop Playlist (OBS documentation says it is enabled by default), then verify playlist order and playback in the preview.
Match application architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source. Keep playlist files at stable paths readable by the Ubuntu account that will launch OBS; a playlist that points to files in a temporary or disconnected location will not be reliable after restart.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live safely
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS’s stream settings, choose the YouTube integration if available in your installed version, or use the custom server and key fields with the values supplied by YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public unit file, screenshot, article, or log excerpt. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled broadcast, check Live Control Room for the preview and event state. A connected encoder does not by itself prove the event has become public; auto-start and auto-stop behavior depends on the stream settings.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the stream URL, key, preview, and event controls. After the encoder connects, verify the stream on the intended YouTube watch page.
Choose output settings and test the stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a starting point, then make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with room for normal network variation. For H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Its cited table recommends these bitrates:

These are YouTube Help recommendations on the encoder-settings page accessed 2026, not guarantees of quality or connection stability. The complete page covers other resolutions, codecs, and minimums; confirm its current table and use RTMPS where available. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
Before relying on automatic startup, perform a representative test. OBS’s Quick Start guide encourages a test before the first stream, and YouTube advises testing representative movement and audio while monitoring stream health. For a loop setup, check the repeat boundary, audio continuity, stream health, YouTube watch page, OBS restart, and startup after a login or reboot. Also observe what happens after an internet interruption; recovery behavior depends on the connection and event settings.

Launch OBS automatically in the desktop session
Once manual streaming works, configure Ubuntu’s graphical-session startup to launch OBS as the same user who owns the scene configuration and can access the media. The exact menu labels and startup tools vary across Ubuntu desktop versions, so use the session’s available Startup Applications or equivalent graphical autostart setting and add the OBS launch command there. OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, but that switch does not turn OBS into a headless daemon or solve missing display access. Review OBS launch parameters.
- Open the desktop session’s startup-applications settings and add OBS as a startup application.
- Use the OBS executable provided by your installation. If you add
--startstreaming, first verify the scene and YouTube event are configured as intended; automatic launch can begin transmitting immediately. - Sign out and back in, or reboot for a controlled test. Check that OBS opens under the intended account, the media source plays, the encoder connects, and the YouTube event reaches the expected state.
A systemd user service may be an operational option in a specific environment, but it is not a universal recipe established by OBS’s launch-parameter documentation. If you use one, validate the graphical session and display environment, audio devices, file permissions, package path, login persistence, and restart behavior on the actual Ubuntu machine. Do not put a real stream key in a readable service file or logs.

Plan for long sessions and archiving
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an archive for a continuous session longer than 12 hours or that a single OBS session can run indefinitely. If uninterrupted multi-day playback or a complete archive matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior for your account and event settings, and plan how you will detect and recover from a stopped encoder or lost connection.
Troubleshoot common failures
