The name shown under Claimant is the party asserting the claim—not proof that it owns every relevant right. Check the claimed asset, matched segment and territories, then verify whether the claim concerns the composition, the specific recording, or both.
First, distinguish a live interruption from a claim on the archive
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content while they are running. It may warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. If you archive the stream, YouTube says a Content ID claim on that archive is made after the stream ends. These are different events, so note whether the problem happened during the broadcast or appeared later on the archived video. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance also says that even a licensed stream can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.
A Studio copyright claim is not itself a copyright strike. A copyright takedown is a separate process: a valid removal request can remove the video and apply a strike. Check which one Studio identifies before deciding what to do. YouTube’s explanation of copyright claims describes the distinction.
Find the claimant and capture the claim details
- In YouTube Studio, open the affected video and its copyright or claim details.
- Under Content used, select See details. Find the name shown under Claimant.
- Record the claimed content or asset title, the matched segment or timestamps, the territories covered, and any policy or restriction shown.
- Check every listed claim. A video can have multiple claimants for different segments or territories; the first name is not necessarily the claimant for every portion or region.
The claimant is the party asserting the claim in YouTube’s system. YouTube says it cannot determine who owns the relevant rights. An unfamiliar claimant name therefore needs investigation, but it does not by itself show that a claim is invalid.

Work out whether the claim is for the composition or the recording
A music loop can involve distinct rights in the underlying musical work and in the particular recording. An old raga, traditional melody or composition does not make every modern performance or recording of it public domain.
The sound recording or master
This is the particular recorded performance heard in your loop. YouTube says a record label usually holds rights to the master recording, although a distributor or another administrator may act for the label, and arrangements may vary by territory. The party administering a recording’s Content ID reference might therefore have a different name from the performer or label shown on a release. YouTube’s music-rights guidance discusses these roles.
The musical composition
This is the underlying musical work, which may include lyrics. Publishers and collecting societies can administer composition rights. The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) says it administers musical works and associated lyrics; that remit does not establish that it represents the particular composition in your claim, or that it owns the recording. IPRS’s licensing information describes its stated role.

How Indian copyright roles fit
India’s official copyright guidance distinguishes a musical work from a sound recording. It identifies the composer as ordinarily the author of a musical work and the producer as the author of a sound recording, and notes that a musical recording can involve lyricists, composers, singers, instrumental performers and producers. A rights holder, administrator and Content ID claimant need not be the same person or organization. The Copyright Office also says copyright arises automatically rather than requiring registration; a registration entry can serve as prima facie evidence in court, but absence of an entry alone does not prove that a work is uncopyrighted or that a claimant lacks rights. See Intellectual Property India’s copyright overview.

Compare the actual audio you streamed with the claimed asset and the segment shown in Studio. For Content ID assets, YouTube specifies minimum metadata: a sound recording or music video should have a title, artist and record label; a musical composition should have a title and writer. Additional identifying metadata can help narrow down the work, but those fields alone do not prove a legal chain of title. YouTube’s Content ID eligibility rules set out the reference requirements.
- Match the segment: Does the timestamp correspond to the loop you used, and does the audio actually match the claimed recording or work?
- Identify the layer: Is the claim for a specific master recording, the underlying composition, or a different claimed asset? A similar melody is not automatically the same recording.
- Compare the metadata: Check title, artist, label or producer for a recording; check title and writer for a composition. Treat missing or conflicting details as questions to resolve, not as proof either way.
- Check territories: Note where the claim applies. Rights and administration may differ by region, and a claimant listed for one territory may not cover another.
YouTube requires Content ID reference owners to have exclusive rights in the territories for which they claim ownership and to submit sufficiently distinct reference material. Its ineligible-reference examples include public-domain material, karaoke recordings, remasters, sound-alike recordings and production loops or soundbeds. A match is a reason to investigate; it is not, by itself, a ruling that the reference qualifies or that the displayed claimant’s ownership is correct.

Verify the claimant’s authority for this work and territory
Use the claim’s asset title and identifiers, together with the audio and metadata, to trace the specific release or work. Look for the label, producer, publisher, distributor, performer or collecting society connected to it. Then compare that information with your licence, release documentation or other evidence of who controls the relevant rights in the claimed territory.
IPRS is a possible lead for Indian composition rights, but its general remit is not proof of representation for an individual work. Its website states that the Government renewed its copyright-society registration on 21 January 2025, retrospectively from 28 November 2022, for five years from registration. That describes IPRS’s stated registration status; it does not establish that it represents your composition or controls its recording.

Several parties may have relevant rights in one video: one for the composition, another for the master recording, and different administrators or claimants in different territories. Assess each claim against the particular asset, segment, region and evidence rather than treating one name as the owner of all rights.

Choose a response based on whether the issue is live or archived
If YouTube interrupted a licensed live stream
Ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a live stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting even if you believe your licence covers the territories where the stream is available. Keep the licence and the owner’s confirmation of allowlisting for your records.
If the archived stream has a Content ID claim
Preserve the claim details and your supporting evidence before taking action. YouTube lists having the necessary rights, a qualifying copyright exception, or believing the video was misidentified or matched in error as possible grounds for a dispute. The claimant reviews the initial dispute, not YouTube, and has 30 days to respond. If the claimant rejects it, the claim may remain; a valid removal request can remove the video and give the channel a strike. Dispute only when you have a genuine rights or identification basis. YouTube’s dispute guidance explains the process.
Credit to an artist, owning a copy of a recording, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself establish permission and is not a valid dispute reason under YouTube’s guidance.

Evidence to gather before disputing
- A copy of the licence or written permission, including the work or recording covered, territories and relevant dates.
- Studio screenshots or notes identifying the claimant, asset, segment, territories and policy shown.
- Release or catalogue information that links the exact audio to its label, producer, publisher or administrator.
- For a suspected misidentification, a clear comparison showing how the claimed asset differs from the audio in your stream.
- For a live interruption, confirmation from the rights owner that the channel has been allowlisted.
Without the specific claimant, claim details, audio, territories and relevant licence or rights documentation, it is not possible to establish who owns a particular loop or whether a specific claim is valid. The practical test is whether the claimant can be connected to the right being asserted for that exact work or recording in the territory shown.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your Indian classical music loop is part of a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; a computer, OBS and a home connection do not need to keep running. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera; you remain responsible for having rights to the music and resolving any claim.
