How to Compare Video Quality at Different Bitrates for a YouTube Loop Stream

Compare bitrate variants from the same YouTube loop source, then judge picture detail alongside upload headroom and live stream health.

To compare bitrate quality fairly, encode the same loop at several bitrates while keeping resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder settings, and source segment constant. Compare the same moments at the same display size, then check stream health and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are useful reference points, not guarantees of what viewers will receive: YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats.

Start with the right bitrate reference

Choose a YouTube recommendation matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to stream. YouTube’s current live encoder settings page lists these 1080p examples:

Codec Resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264 1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not universal quality thresholds. The official table also lists other resolutions and frame rates; consult the matching row at YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. The page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 support for RTMP/RTMPS.

Build a fair bitrate comparison

  1. Choose one representative source loop. Include both relatively still or low-motion sections and moments with fine detail or movement. That helps reveal different failure modes rather than judging a bitrate from an easy scene alone.
  2. Make several encodes, changing target bitrate only. Keep the source, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, encoder preset, color handling, and timing the same. Select a range around the matching YouTube recommendation so the comparison shows what changes below and above that reference.
  3. Record what was actually encoded. For each variant, note the target setting and actual encoded or observed bitrate. The target and measured rate may differ; do not label a variant only by its intended setting.
  4. Compare identical timestamps side by side. Use the same playback size and viewing conditions. Inspect texture and fine detail, edge definition, gradients, motion, blocking, and banding. Keep notes by timecode so a visual difference can be revisited rather than remembered.
  5. Repeat the live test under comparable network conditions. Use audio and motion similar to the intended stream, then monitor YouTube stream health and messages. Record dropped frames or health warnings separately from visual quality.

A useful comparison record includes codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, encoder preset, source segment, target and actual bitrate, viewing size, and network conditions. If any of those change between variants, you may not be isolating bitrate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use objective metrics as supporting evidence

Full-reference metrics compare an encoded version with its source. Netflix’s VMAF project describes a perceptual video-quality assessment algorithm and includes implementations of PSNR, PSNR-HVS, SSIM, MS-SSIM, and CIEDE2000. VMAF is also available as an FFmpeg filter when FFmpeg is built with libvmaf. FFmpeg documents using the filter with a reference and a distorted input: FFmpeg libvmaf filter documentation.

Keep metric comparisons aligned

For each encode, compare the same source sequence with frames and timing aligned. Keep dimensions and preprocessing consistent across variants. Netflix’s VMAF FAQ warns that comparing absolute scores for 1080 video and 480 video at their native resolutions is an “apples-to-oranges comparison.” If you compare resolutions, make the preprocessing and display dimensions consistent rather than ranking native-resolution scores as though they were directly interchangeable.

Use a score to support inspection, not replace it. The cited sources do not establish a fixed conversion from a local VMAF, SSIM, or PSNR score to the quality every viewer will see on YouTube.

Include upload capacity and stream stability

A locally encoded file can look good and still be a poor live-stream choice if the connection cannot sustain its bitrate. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. A shared connection may provide less bandwidth to the stream than its nominal connection speed suggests. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Measure available upload capacity under conditions similar to the planned stream, not just the connection’s advertised maximum.
  • Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom when assessing whether a bitrate is sustainable.
  • Watch stream health and dropped-frame warnings during live tests; record reliability separately from image quality.
  • Do not choose a higher bitrate solely because its local encode looks better if the upload connection cannot support it consistently.

Interpret the result for viewers carefully

YouTube states that it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Your side-by-side source comparison can show the quality differences among your encodes, but it cannot guarantee identical playback quality for every viewer. The useful choice is therefore the variant that delivers the visual detail your loop needs while remaining within available upload capacity and maintaining healthy stream delivery.
