TikTok named Yung Lean’s “Ginseng Strip 2002” its most popular song globally in 2022, ahead of Nicky Youre and dazy’s “Sunroof” and WILLOW’s “Wait a Minute.” The ranking is TikTok’s global year-end list, based on the company’s internal research and trend analysis from January through October—not a complete chart of every day of 2022 or a ranking with a published per-song formula. TikTok’s year-end list is best read as a snapshot of songs that caught on across the platform.
What were TikTok’s most viral songs in 2022?
These are the ten songs in TikTok’s global year-end list, in the order published. TikTok did not provide a numerical score or specify a single per-song measure in the accessible list, so the positions should not be treated as a video-creation count or a streaming chart.
- “Ginseng Strip 2002” — Yung Lean
- “Sunroof” — Nicky Youre & dazy
- “Wait a Minute” — WILLOW
- “Beat Automotivo Tan Tan Tan Viral” — WZ Beat
- “Cool for the Summer” — Demi Lovato
- “Jiggle Jiggle” — Duke & Jones & Louis Theroux
- “Me Porto Bonito” — Bad Bunny & Chencho Corleone
- “About Damn Time” — Lizzo
- “L$d” — Luclover
- “Una Noche En Medellín” — Cris Mj
The list’s research window was January through October 2022, even though TikTok presented it as a year-end roundup. Its ordering identifies TikTok’s picks, but the company did not publish a precise ranking formula in the list.
Why these songs stood out
“Ginseng Strip 2002” and “Sunroof” led the global list
Yung Lean’s “Ginseng Strip 2002” took the top spot, with “Sunroof” close behind, according to TikTok’s description. Their placement reflects the platform’s global year-end editorial ranking, not a claim that either song topped every country’s chart or every possible measure of use.

A summer revival, a dance track and a Bad Bunny favorite
TikTok linked Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” to a sped-up summer trend. It also called “Me Porto Bonito” the most popular of Bad Bunny’s many songs trending on the platform in 2022. Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” appears eighth in the global ten.
Regional Latin music reached the global ten
At number ten, Cris Mj’s “Una Noche En Medellín” was described by TikTok as the biggest hit in a strong year for regional Latin music on the platform. The list also includes WZ Beat’s “Beat Automotivo Tan Tan Tan Viral,” among other songs from different genres and markets.

Why UK and Japan rankings look different
A song’s position depends on where a list applies and what it counts. TikTok published separate country lists and categories in 2022, so they should not be merged with the global top ten.
| List | Geography and measure | What led it |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok global year-end list | Global; TikTok’s list does not state a precise per-song metric. Its internal research and trend-analysis window was January–October 2022. | “Ginseng Strip 2002” — Yung Lean |
| TikTok UK year-end list | UK; explicitly ranked by video creations. | “Sunroof” — Nicky Youre and dazy |
| TikTok Japan year-end chart | Japan; domestic data from January 1 to November 30, 2022, divided into most played, most used in videos, most liked and most shared categories. | “Chiguhagu” by THE SUPER FRUIT led most played; “PAKU” by asmi led most used in videos. |
The UK top five were “Sunroof,” “Ginseng Strip 2002,” “L$d,” “Own Brand Freestyle” and “Reggae & Calypso.” The rest of that UK top ten included “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God),” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Jiggle Jiggle,” “Captain (whistle)” and “About Damn Time.” This is a video-creation ranking for the UK, not the global list.

In Japan, “Edison” by Wednesday Campanella placed second in the most-played category behind “Chiguhagu.” Those results illustrate why plays and video uses cannot be treated as the same measure; likes and shares are separate categories too.
How TikTok’s list compares with Spotify
Spotify’s global year-end streaming list put Harry Styles’s “As It Was” first and “Me Porto Bonito” fourth. That is streaming context, not a TikTok chart. Spotify also published a separate “Most Viral Artists Globally” list, defining viral artists by how often Spotify music was shared to social platforms. Its sharing-based measure is distinct from TikTok’s year-end song ranking.

What TikTok said about music trends in 2022
TikTok UK reported that “13 out of the 14 Billboard Hot 100 number ones were driven by significant trends on TikTok” and that “10 of the 12 number ones on the UK Official Singles Chart had a viral moment.” These are TikTok’s own claims in its 2022 UK report, not independent findings that TikTok alone caused chart success. The same report said “Sun and Moon” had 678,000 video creations; that figure refers to a UK breakthrough-artist entry, not a song in the global top ten.
Commenting on the breadth of trends, Paul Hourican, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Operations, said: “This year, we’ve seen music from every genre and every market take off globally on TikTok.” The remark appeared in TikTok UK’s global-music commentary.

How to read a TikTok year-end song ranking
Before comparing a song’s position across lists, check four things:
- Geography: Is the ranking global, UK, Japan or another market?
- Measure: Does it count video creations, plays, likes or shares—or, in Spotify’s case, streams or social sharing?
- Period: What dates does the list cover? TikTok’s global 2022 ranking used January–October analysis, while Japan’s chart covered January 1–November 30.
- Publisher: Is it TikTok’s list, a country-specific TikTok chart or a ranking from another platform?
Those distinctions explain how “Ginseng Strip 2002” could top TikTok’s global year-end list while “Sunroof” led the UK video-creation ranking and “Chiguhagu” led Japan’s most-played category.
