You can usually continue an interrupted YouTube upload for up to 24 hours: return to youtube.com/upload and select the same video file from your computer. Google Drive does not provide a documented direct way to resume a YouTube upload; it is a separate service for storing and uploading files.
Continue the YouTube upload within 24 hours
YouTube Help says that if you had to stop an upload, you have up to 24 hours to continue where it left off. The documented method is to reopen the upload page and choose the same file from your computer. YouTube’s instructions do not describe a separate resume control or a Drive-to-YouTube transfer.
- Open youtube.com/upload in a browser and sign in to the channel where you started the upload.
- Select the same original video file from your computer. Avoid choosing an edited, re-encoded, or otherwise different copy when continuing the interrupted transfer.
- Wait for the upload to resume and complete. Keep the browser open and the connection stable while it transfers.
The 24-hour period is the continuation window described in YouTube Help, not a promise that every upload will recover in every circumstance. If the window has passed, or YouTube shows an error instead of continuing, use the error text to identify the next step.
If the video is in Google Drive
YouTube’s documented continuation method asks you to select the same file from your computer. If the only copy is in Drive, first make the original file available on the computer, then select it on YouTube’s upload page. This is an application of YouTube’s instruction; YouTube and Drive do not document a direct Drive-to-YouTube resume feature.

Drive’s help page covers problems uploading a video into Drive, which is a different transfer. For a Drive upload that itself is stuck, Drive suggests checking the connection and available storage, trying a private or incognito window or another browser, and trying the desktop or mobile app. Those steps do not resume a YouTube upload. When an upload is slow or appears stuck
A slow transfer is not necessarily a failed one. YouTube identifies file size and type, connection quality, upload traffic, and video quality as factors that can affect how long an upload takes. Its guidance is to let a slow or apparently stuck upload finish when possible. Check YouTube’s upload guidance before restarting and transferring the file again.

- Use a stable internet connection and avoid interrupting the browser while the upload is progressing.
- Allow more time for large or high-quality video files and during busy upload periods.
- If progress stops and YouTube displays an error, note the exact message; a repeated resume attempt may not fix a format, account, or browser problem.
Diagnose an error before trying again
YouTube’s common uploading errors guide distinguishes issues such as network or browser problems, unsupported formats, account or channel restrictions, and daily upload limits. Follow the remedy for the error shown rather than treating every failure as an interrupted transfer.
- Network or browser message: check that the connection is working, then try an up-to-date browser.
- Format message: confirm the video is in a format YouTube accepts. If you create a new export, it is a different file; do not substitute it when attempting to continue the original transfer.
- Account, channel, or limit message: check the channel status and the specific restriction described in YouTube’s error guidance. Waiting or changing the browser will not necessarily resolve an account-level limit.
Check file limits and browser requirements
YouTube Help states that an upload can be no larger than 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. It recommends an up-to-date browser for files over 20 GB. These are YouTube’s current help figures as accessed in 2026; confirm the current upload requirements before preparing a particularly large or long file, since platform rules can change.
