To rotate prerecorded videos in a YouTube livestream, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video source playlist and turn on Loop Playlist. Install VLC first; for just one video, OBS’s built-in Media Source has its own Loop option. This automates playback, not the computer, network connection, or broadcast uptime.
Set up an OBS playlist that repeats
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection process.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or mismatched, the VLC Video source may not be available. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add a VLC Video source to your OBS scene. Open the scene where the videos should appear, add a source, choose VLC Video, then add the local video files to its playlist. Arrange the playlist in the playback order you want; choose shuffle if you want the order randomized.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This makes the source restart from the playlist after it reaches the final file. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but check it rather than relying on the default. The VLC Video source also provides visibility behavior, network caching, and audio-track settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube and start the encoder. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if offered, or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Start streaming in OBS, then check the live preview and audio in YouTube Studio.
For a single video
Add OBS’s built-in Media Source instead of VLC Video, select the file, and enable its Loop option. Media Source is suited to repeating one clip; VLC Video provides a playlist for rotating multiple files.
What looping does—and what it does not
A playlist loop handles which prerecorded clip plays next. It does not keep OBS running, restore power, repair a lost internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube stays connected. The documented OBS and YouTube setup does not promise recovery after a computer, application, power, or network failure. If unattended continuity matters, plan how those failures will be detected and handled rather than treating Loop Playlist as a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived. Do not assume a stream running longer than that will produce a complete archive.

Choose the connection method that fits your setup
YouTube describes encoder software running on a computer as well as standalone encoder hardware. For a local OBS playlist, the computer must remain capable of playing the files and sending the stream. Before choosing hardware, verify that the specific model supports playlist rotation and determine how it handles disconnections; the official guidance cited here does not establish those capabilities for any particular model.
HLS is a separate ingestion option with its own requirements, not a set of settings that applies to every OBS workflow. YouTube specifies MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also states HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup requirements and Google’s HLS ingestion guide before configuring an HLS encoder.

Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from the OBS source list: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC with a 64-bit OBS installation.
- The playlist stops at the last clip: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Only one clip repeats when you expected a rotation: Confirm that all files were added to the VLC Video playlist. For a single file, use Media Source’s Loop option; it does not provide a multi-file rotation.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, use the current server URL and stream key for the selected stream, and check the stream preview in YouTube Studio. First-time channel activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The broadcast stops even though looping is enabled: Looping controls media playback, not encoder or network recovery. Check whether OBS is still running and connected, and investigate computer power and internet interruptions.
