To make a highlight video from a livestream, save the broadcast or record it locally, mark promising moments while live, then review those moments, trim each clip so it has enough context, and publish it in a format suited to its destination. YouTube, TikTok LIVE Studio, and Twitch each offer ways to mark or create highlights; downloaded footage gives you more editing control.

Before the stream: make sure you have footage to edit

A highlight is only possible if you retain the source recording. Check the platform’s replay or recording settings before going live. TikTok LIVE Studio requires you to choose a save path and recording format before recording starts. Its listed formats are MP4, MOV, and MKV. On Twitch, enable Past Broadcast storage if you want livestreams saved as VODs. Platform retention and menus can change, so check the current settings in the relevant app or help center.

TikTok LIVE Studio’s local recording captures the software canvas, but not audience information such as gifts or comments. If those on-screen elements matter to the story, confirm what your chosen recording method captures before the broadcast.

Mark moments while you’re live

Marking moments as they happen is usually faster than searching a long recording from beginning to end. YouTube and Twitch document stream markers that timestamp moments for later review. A solo streamer can add a marker and keep broadcasting; a team can have someone track moments while the host continues.

YouTube Live

Insert a stream marker when an interesting moment happens. After the broadcast, use the marker to find the section when creating a highlight in YouTube Studio. YouTube also supports creating a highlight while streaming when someone on the team can handle the editing.

TikTok LIVE Studio

During a LIVE, click the highlight button to record the past two minutes of content; TikTok also documents Ctrl+1 as a way to trigger it. TikTok says it can generate highlights based on viewer interactions, comments, and gifts in the LIVE replay. Those generated moments are starting points to review, not a substitute for checking that a clip works on its own.

Twitch

Use Stream Markers to timestamp moments in a VOD for later editing. Twitch also offers clips—shorter captures made from a live stream or past broadcast—and a Highlighter for selecting VOD segments. Twitch’s official guidance describes assembling multiple segments into a highlight. Its help pages and interface may change; check the current Twitch Help Center for the latest menu names and controls.

Review the recording and choose complete moments

  1. Open the saved VOD or local recording after the stream.
  2. Review markers or platform-generated suggestions first, then scrub other sections if you are looking for additional moments.
  3. For each candidate, keep enough lead-in to explain what is happening and enough follow-through to show the result or reaction.
  4. Remove dead air, unrelated setup, and pauses that do not add meaning. A clip should make sense to someone who did not watch the full broadcast.
  5. Decide whether the moment works best as a single highlight or as one segment in a longer compilation. There is no universal ideal clip length; let the moment and destination determine it.

Make the highlight in the platform or edit the footage separately

Native tools are convenient when you want a straightforward trim and quick publishing. Downloading the recording for a separate editor is more useful when you need substantial control over framing, captions, audio, or transitions. The available controls differ by platform:

Approach What it supports When it fits
YouTube Studio highlight Trim a livestream timeline using handles or timestamps; choose mute or unmute, add a title and description, set privacy, and create the highlight. YouTube says it is published automatically. Use it for a simple highlight from a YouTube livestream when timeline trimming and YouTube publishing are sufficient.
TikTok LIVE Studio highlights Access highlights from the ending popup or LIVE Center; delete, download, crop, or post them. When posting, choose a cover and add a title and description. TikTok recommends further editing for subtitles, music, transitions, and post-dubbing. Use it for quick TikTok-focused clips, or download footage when you want more editing before posting.
Twitch Highlighter or clips Use VOD segments in Highlighter or create shorter clips from a live stream or past broadcast. Twitch’s official indexed guidance describes Stream Markers and multi-segment highlights. Use native tools for Twitch clips or VOD highlights; consult the current help center for exact controls.
Downloaded footage in a separate editor Editing depends on the software and source recording; the reviewed platform guidance does not establish one required editor or universal export settings. Choose this route when you need editing choices beyond the platform’s native trim, crop, or publishing tools.

Create a YouTube highlight

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the livestream recording and start the highlight workflow.
  2. Trim the timeline by dragging its handles or entering timestamps. Use your stream markers to locate candidate moments.
  3. Choose whether the highlight is muted or unmuted, then enter a title and description.
  4. Set the privacy option and create the highlight. YouTube’s documented flow automatically publishes it.

YouTube describes a highlight as a shorter, edited version of a livestream. Its workflow is useful for selecting a portion of the recording; if you need more elaborate editing, work from a downloaded source instead.

Find and prepare TikTok LIVE Studio highlights

  1. After the LIVE ends, open the ending popup or LIVE Center to find highlights.
  2. Review each suggested or manually captured moment. Delete clips you do not want to keep, or download a clip for further editing.
  3. Crop the clip for its intended presentation. Add subtitles when dialogue needs to work without sound; TikTok also recommends considering music, transitions, or post-dubbing during further editing.
  4. When posting, select a cover and enter a title and description.

TikTok LIVE Studio’s local recording is another option if you want to edit from the full source. Set the save path and format before starting the recording; changing those settings after the stream cannot recover footage that was never captured.

Use Twitch clips or Highlighter

Make a clip when you want a short capture of a moment from a live stream or VOD. Use Highlighter when you want to select VOD segments for a highlight; markers help you find the moments. Twitch’s official search-indexed help describes these tools, but exact interface locations and shortcuts should be verified in its current Help Center.

Frame and label the clip for its destination

Choose a crop that keeps the important action visible, particularly if the source is a wide livestream and the destination uses a different frame. Check the crop from beginning to end: a speaker or key detail can move out of frame even if the opening looks right. There is no single aspect ratio or export setting established for every platform and type of highlight.

Trim for clarity rather than an arbitrary duration. Add captions if viewers need to follow speech without sound, and check that music or other audio is appropriate to publish. Give the clip an accurate title and description, and select privacy or a cover where the platform offers those choices. YouTube’s highlight flow includes title, description, mute choice, and privacy; TikTok documents a cover, title, and description when posting.

Common problems and fixes

The replay or recording is missing

Confirm that replay storage or local recording was enabled before the broadcast. Twitch requires Past Broadcast storage to be enabled for VOD retention. TikTok LIVE Studio’s save path and format are set before recording starts. If no recording was saved, markers alone do not recreate the missing video.

You cannot find the best moment in a long VOD

Use stream markers as navigation points and review those sections first. If you did not mark moments, scrub the recording and note timestamps before making trims; trying to polish while searching makes it harder to judge the clip as a whole.

A clip feels confusing when watched alone

Restore a little context before the key moment and keep the outcome or reaction afterward. Remove unrelated setup, but do not cut so tightly that the viewer cannot tell what prompted the moment.

The crop hides a speaker or important action

Review the entire clip after cropping, not only its first frame. Adjust the framing or use a wider version if the action cannot remain visible in the intended crop.

The TikTok LIVE recording lacks comments or gifts

TikTok LIVE Studio’s local recording captures the software canvas and does not include audience information such as gifts or comments. If those elements are essential, check the capture setup before the next LIVE rather than assuming they will appear in the local file.

The Twitch controls do not match a guide

Twitch’s help pages and interface can change. Verify the current Highlighter, clip, and marker instructions in Twitch’s Help Center instead of relying on an old menu path or shortcut.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you also want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos between livestreams, StreamNeo is a separate way to run a 24/7 YouTube stream: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it does not replace the recording and editing workflow for making highlights.
