Use impressions and click-through rate to assess reach and thumbnail appeal; watch time, average view duration, and retention to understand viewing; average and peak concurrent viewers to describe the live audience; and chat, reactions, likes, or subscriber gains as distinct interaction and outcome signals. No single number explains a stream’s performance on its own.
Match each metric to the question it answers
YouTube describes live performance as a viewer journey through appeal, engagement, and satisfaction. Its guidance notes: “Different formats are meant to support your channel goals, whether it’s meaningful community or broader audience reach.” That is a reason to set a goal before interpreting a dashboard, not to treat one metric as a universal score.

How to read metrics together
Separate reach from viewing depth
High CTR with weak viewing duration raises a different follow-up question from low impressions with strong retention. The first pattern may justify investigating whether the stream fulfilled the expectation set by its title and thumbnail; the second may prompt a look at how people could discover it. Neither pattern proves a cause. Compare the measures and investigate the relevant stream details rather than treating correlation as an explanation.
Choose a goal-relevant outcome
A community-focused stream may call for attention to chat and sustained attendance, while a reach-focused stream may put more weight on impressions and CTR. Subscriber gains or reminders set can matter when they align with the stream’s purpose. Activity is not automatically satisfaction, and a high peak does not establish that viewers watched for long.

Compare like with like
- Compare the same metric at the same level: an individual video with another video, or channel-level figures with channel-level figures.
- Use comparable time windows and filters, and distinguish live from on-demand viewing where the report allows it.
- Compare reach, conversion from impression to viewing, viewing depth, simultaneous audience, interaction, discovery source, and the outcome relevant to your goal as separate dimensions.
- Use your own typical streams and goals as context; do not treat a single stream or an unsupported industry benchmark as a universal standard.
Where to find YouTube Live metrics
While the stream is live
In Live Control Room, check stream health and the real-time metrics available for your streaming method. For the computer workflow, YouTube lists concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. The available live metrics differ between phone and encoder workflows.
After the stream ends
Live Control Room offers a quick snapshot that can include views, new subscribers, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, duration, average view duration, and reactions. For video-level reporting in YouTube Studio, open Content, select Live, open a stream, and choose Analytics. Video reports include average and peak concurrent viewers, audience-retention moments, reactions, and reminders set. Channel-level reporting includes average and peak concurrent viewers across streams and hours streamed.

For broader audience and discovery reports
YouTube Analytics includes watch time, retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Live reports can include peak concurrent viewers and chat messages, and can be downloaded as CSV. Some breakdowns may be limited, so read them as context rather than definitive explanations.
Why real-time and post-stream counts may differ
YouTube says Analytics data is based on Video ID, is processed and despammed, and measures different information from Live Control Room. Live-stream reports are available at video level, with metrics appearing in Analytics within minutes after the stream ends. Treat real-time dashboard figures and processed post-stream reports as related views, not necessarily identical measurements.

What changes for a dual stream?
For streams sent in horizontal and vertical formats, Live Control Room combines the metrics. YouTube documents a way to select vertical-only metrics in Studio after the stream has ended for 24 hours: use Advanced Mode and a playback-location breakdown. Keep that reporting distinction in mind when comparing formats.
