Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your upload speed falls during a livestream, lower your encoder’s video bitrate until it stays within the connection’s reliable capacity. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate. In OBS, dynamic bitrate adjustment can help avoid network-related dropped frames, but it lowers picture quality and does not fix the connection. Then check other upload traffic, Wi-Fi, the route to the ingest server, and your network equipment.
First, identify what is actually failing
In OBS, check the dropped-frame indicator and your streaming platform’s stream-health messages. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. See OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Do not confuse broadcaster-side dropped frames with viewer buffering. If OBS reports no network drops but viewers say the stream stalls, their connection, location, or device may be the problem. A lower bitrate may still help viewers receive the stream, particularly when the platform does not provide transcoding, but diagnose the two symptoms separately. OBS covers this distinction in its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.
Lower the bitrate before changing everything else
The encoder sends data at the bitrate you set; when stable upload capacity falls below that demand, frames can be lost on the way to the platform. Reduce the video bitrate in your streaming software, then watch the dropped-frame indicator and stream health. Make a modest change and observe the result rather than changing several network settings at once.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS Project’s 2024 guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate. Treat this as a heuristic, not a guarantee: speed tests are snapshots, and household uploads, network overhead, and fluctuations can leave less capacity available during the stream. The stable capacity at the time of broadcast matters more than a best-case test result.
Platform encoder recommendations are not the same thing as upload-speed guarantees. For YouTube, the current live encoder settings guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists 720p at 30 or 60 fps as 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended with AV1/H.265, or 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended with H.264. For 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended with AV1/H.265, or 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended with H.264. These are YouTube ingestion settings, not universal upload-speed thresholds; use the current table for your chosen settings and codec.

Reduce resolution or frame rate if bitrate alone is not enough
A lower bitrate can preserve the stream while making the image softer or more prone to compression artifacts, especially in fast-moving footage. If the picture becomes unacceptable, reduce resolution or frame rate as well, then select a bitrate that the connection can sustain. For a documentary stream with mostly talking heads, slides, or archival footage, a lower frame rate may be less noticeable than it would be for fast action. Judge the result using your actual program material.
Choose continuity versus picture quality deliberately: a lower, stable setting is often preferable to a high-quality feed that repeatedly drops. Stay within the target platform’s current ingest guidance. Resolution and frame rate affect bitrate demand, while platform features can impose other trade-offs; YouTube, for example, does not offer its low-latency option at 2160p/4K.

Use OBS dynamic bitrate as a fallback
OBS includes an option called “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” It lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may prevent network-related dropped frames and help the stream remain connected. OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying connection and that video quality will fall while bitrate is reduced. Enable it as a continuity measure, not as a substitute for finding the cause.
Work through the likely causes in order
- Stop competing uploads. Pause cloud backups, file transfers, uploads, and other devices’ heavy upstream activity. Retest with the same stream settings so you can tell whether the available upload capacity was the issue.
- Try another ingest server. If your software or platform lets you choose one, test a different server. A failure limited to one server or service path can help isolate a routing problem; changing servers is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
- Test wired Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Use a suitable cable and repeat the test from the same location and with the same settings. Buy a cable only if you need one for this comparison.
- Check network software and devices. VPNs, security software, network-management or prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, faulty cabling, or device problems can affect the send path. Where practical, change one item at a time and test again.
- Restart the modem and router. If the issue continues, check the equipment and connections rather than assuming the router needs replacing. OBS advises contacting your ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve it. Share when the drops occur, what you observed, and which tests you tried. Provider-side changes or congestion along the route may be outside your control; your ISP can investigate its part of the path.
Test before going live and monitor the stream
A speed test helps, but it cannot establish that a particular live stream will remain stable. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, testing before going live with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its advice is to “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a short private or otherwise appropriate test with the same encoder settings and network conditions you expect to use for the program.
