Multistreaming—also called simulstreaming—sends the same live program to more than one platform at the same time. It gives viewers another place to watch and can simplify distribution, but it does not guarantee audience growth. To do it, choose local encoding or a cloud relay, confirm each destination is ready to receive a stream, and test your bandwidth and stream health before going live.
What multistreaming does—and what it cannot promise
YouTube describes simulstreaming as going live with the same content across platforms at the same time. A multistream setup can make a documentary screening, interview, or live discussion available on several services without asking viewers to move to one particular platform.
That wider availability is an opportunity, not proof of growth. The reviewed platform and vendor guidance does not establish that simulcasting by itself increases viewership. Viewers still need to find the program, and audiences on different platforms may behave differently.
Choose how to send the stream
Local encoding: more control, more work for your setup
With local encoding, software on your computer processes and sends the stream to multiple destinations. YouTube identifies control and the possibility of the highest quality as reasons to choose this route, provided the computer has a powerful CPU. Your machine and connection must handle the configured outputs; test them under realistic conditions rather than assuming they will.

Cloud relay: one feed distributed by a service
A cloud relay receives one stream from your encoder and forwards it to the destinations you select. YouTube describes this approach as simpler and lighter on the computer, and potentially useful when targeting more than two channels. Services may charge a subscription, and features and limits vary by provider and plan.
For example, Restream documents an OBS workflow in which you connect accounts or use its stream key, select destinations in the service, choose Restream under OBS Settings > Stream, and click Start Streaming. The service then distributes the broadcast to the selected channels. These are Restream’s own setup instructions; confirm its current integrations and plan limits before relying on them. How to stream to multiple platforms at once
- Prepare the accounts. Verify the channel you will stream from and enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation takes at least 24 hours after the first request. Check that every destination account is active and in good standing.
- Check each platform’s current rules. Confirm eligibility, content requirements, and simulcasting terms with every destination. Policies differ and can change; one platform’s terms should not be assumed to apply to another.
- Pick local encoding or a relay. Use local outputs if you need direct control and your computer and upload connection can support them. Use a cloud relay if you prefer to send one feed for distribution or target several channels.
- Get the connection details. For direct RTMP connections, collect the correct server URL and stream key for each destination. Where supported, account connection can replace manual key entry. Keep stream keys private: anyone with a key may be able to broadcast to that channel.
- Estimate and test upload capacity. If sending distinct outputs locally, add their configured bitrates to estimate the total upload demand. YouTube gives an illustrative example: a 6 Mbps stream plus a 4 Mbps stream makes a 10 Mbps combined target; its 1.5–2× planning rule implies 15–20 Mbps upload for that example. This is not a universal threshold: codec, resolution, frame rate, network conditions, and relay workflow affect actual needs. Test with typical audio and video movement, ideally under the conditions you expect during the event.
- Run a low-risk test. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise low-risk broadcast where available. Check each destination for picture, sound, framing, and any platform-specific layout issues. Confirm that chat and comments are manageable for your team.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health alerts and check the other destinations during the test and event. If upload is unstable, a wired Ethernet connection may help with local connection reliability when your equipment supports it; it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet provider.
Compare services and workflows on the details that matter
There is no universally best service established by the available platform and vendor documentation. Before choosing a workflow, compare:
- Which destinations are supported and whether your accounts are eligible.
- Whether you send one feed to a cloud relay or encode multiple outputs locally.
- Your computer’s CPU or GPU capacity and reliable upload bandwidth.
- Whether chats and comments can be brought together, and how your team will respond.
- Whether you need separate horizontal or vertical layouts, or destination-specific titles.
- Scheduling and analytics features, if you need them.
- Current plan limits and price, checked directly with the provider.
Vendor pages describe their own capabilities, not an independent comparison of results. Choose based on your destinations, production needs, and the limits that apply to your accounts.

Copyright and content checks before going live
Multistreaming does not remove the need to meet each platform’s rules. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the documentary footage, music, photographs, and other material in the program, and review each destination’s current copyright and live-content requirements. A stream accepted by one platform is not necessarily cleared or eligible on another.
