Video streaming delivers audio and video in pieces so a player can begin playback before receiving the entire program. In broad terms, the source is encoded and packaged, a playlist or manifest points to media segments hosted on a server or content delivery network (CDN), and the player requests, buffers, decodes, and plays those segments. When alternate versions are available, the player can switch between them as network conditions change.
What happens when you press play?
Playback is a chain of distinct jobs: preparing the media, describing where its pieces are, delivering those pieces, and reconstructing them on the viewer’s device. A player does not normally wait for the entire video file before showing anything. It fetches media data progressively while playback continues.
- The media is encoded. A recording or live audio-video feed is compressed into formats supported by the intended delivery system and playback devices. Encoding reduces the data needed to represent the source.
- The media is packaged and segmented. Encoded media is arranged for delivery, often as a sequence of segments. The segments may contain video, audio, or both, depending on the format.
- An index describes the stream. A playlist or manifest tells the player what media is available and how to request it. HLS uses playlists; MPEG-DASH uses an MPD, or Media Presentation Description.
- A server or CDN delivers the segments. The player requests them over a network, commonly using HTTP-based delivery for HLS and DASH.
- The player buffers, decodes, and presents them. It keeps some media data ready, passes encoded audio and video to decoders, and presents the result in sync.
Apple’s basic HLS deployment overview describes encoding, a server or CDN, and a receiver as parts of the system. The precise codecs and packaging vary: its example of fragmented MPEG-4 with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC or AC-3 audio is an option, not a universal recipe for every streaming service.
How do playlists, manifests, and segments fit together?
A segment is a portion of encoded media. A playlist or manifest acts as an index: it tells the client what is available and provides information needed to request it in sequence. In HLS, the index is a playlist. In DASH, it is an MPD; Google’s YouTube DASH ingestion guide describes an MPD alongside initialization and media segments for that particular platform workflow.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Alternate representations can also be described. For example, a stream may offer versions at different bit rates or resolutions. Apple’s CMAF documentation describes tracks, fragments, and switching sets that can provide alternate bit rates and resolutions. The player can use those alternatives when the format and service make them available.
Why does streaming sometimes buffer?
A player needs incoming data quickly enough to keep up with playback. It buffers some media in advance to absorb short changes in delivery speed. If the connection’s available throughput stays below what the current representation requires, the buffer can run low and playback may pause. A CDN can help distribute media, but its presence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.

Adaptive bitrate playback can respond by switching to a lower-bitrate representation when conditions worsen, reducing the data rate required at the cost of picture quality. When conditions permit, a player may use a higher-bitrate version. Apple’s HLS overview describes adapting to available connection speed. The switching behavior depends on the player, stream, and implementation; there is no single buffer size or guaranteed outcome that applies to every service.
What is the difference between HLS and MPEG-DASH?
HLS and MPEG-DASH are both HTTP-based approaches for delivering segmented media, but they use different indexing formats. Compatibility depends on the player, device, codecs, packaging, and service configuration—not just the protocol name.

| Aspect | HLS | MPEG-DASH |
|---|---|---|
| Index | HLS playlist | DASH MPD |
| Media organization | Segmented media; HLS can describe alternate streams and adaptation. | Segments are described through an MPD; CMAF documents a segmented-media model usable with HLS and DASH. |
| Delivery | HTTP; web servers and CDNs can be used. | HTTP-based; Google’s YouTube guide describes DASH delivery over HTTP/HTTPS. |
| What to check | Confirm the target device and service support HLS and meet the relevant authoring requirements. | Confirm DASH support and compatibility with the manifest and codecs. |
These are conceptual similarities and differences, not a claim that one protocol is universally better. A browser reference client such as dash.js demonstrates MPEG-DASH playback using browser media APIs, but it does not establish that every browser supports every DASH stream.

With video on demand (VOD), the source has already been recorded when a viewer starts playback. Its segments can be encoded, packaged, and hosted in advance. In a live stream, segments are produced as the event proceeds, and the player follows newly available media. In both cases, the player requests segments and decodes them; the difference is that live media is still being created.

Live latency is affected by choices throughout capture, encoding, segmentation, delivery, and playback. It is not determined by one component alone. In Google’s YouTube live ingestion protocol comparison, last updated June 1, 2026, RTMP and RTMPS are listed for normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while segment-based HLS and DASH are described as having greater latency and not being suitable for ultra-low latency. This comparison concerns sending a creator’s live feed into YouTube; it is not a universal ranking for every implementation or the same thing as distributing playback to viewers.
Google’s YouTube DASH ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026, also explains that YouTube transcodes and rechunks incoming media for its output. That is an example of a platform processing an ingested feed before distributing playback versions; it should not be assumed to describe every service.

What does a streaming service need to play a video?
The playback app must understand the delivery protocol and media packaging, and the device must be able to decode the actual audio and video codecs. Protocol support and codec support are separate requirements: a player might understand a playlist or manifest but still lack support for a codec used by the media. Service and device compatibility therefore depends on the combination of protocol, container, codecs, and implementation.
Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running
If your goal is not just to watch streaming video but to keep uploaded recordings playing continuously on a YouTube channel, a cloud service can handle the looping without leaving a computer running. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing needs to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month.
