Live Streaming Glossary: Essential Terms Explained

Follow a live stream from capture to playback and learn the terms that explain video quality, delivery formats, reliability, and delay.

A live stream travels through a chain: a camera or other source produces audio and video; an encoder compresses it; an ingest service receives it; the stream may be transcoded and packaged; an origin and content delivery network distribute it; and a player presents it to viewers. Knowing where each term fits makes it easier to diagnose quality, compatibility, and delay.

How a live stream gets from a source to a viewer

  1. Capture: A camera, screen capture, or other source produces video and audio.
  2. Encode: Software or hardware turns the source into a digital stream and compresses it for transmission. FFmpeg is one example of an encoder program in Google Cloud’s documentation. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
  3. Ingest: The encoded stream is sent to a platform or media service through an input endpoint. RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT are common contribution protocols.
  4. Transcode, if needed: A service may decode and re-encode the incoming stream into multiple formats or quality levels.
  5. Package: Encoded tracks and metadata are arranged for delivery, often as HLS or DASH segments and manifests.
  6. Distribute: An origin serves the packaged media, and a CDN can distribute it through servers closer to viewers.
  7. Play: A player on a phone, browser, TV, or another device requests and presents the media. With adaptive delivery, it may switch between quality versions as conditions change.

This is a useful general model, not a requirement that every platform expose the same stages. For example, Google Cloud documents SRT or RTMP inputs and HLS or DASH outputs for its Live Stream API; other services may arrange the workflow differently.

Core terms for quality and playback

Bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of encoded data sent per second, commonly measured in kilobits per second (Kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can preserve more detail, but it requires more upload capacity from the source and more delivery capacity for viewers. It does not guarantee better-looking video on its own: resolution, frame rate, codec, encoding settings, motion, and scene complexity all matter.

Resolution

Resolution describes the image dimensions, such as 1280×720. It is not a quality score or a synonym for bitrate. A high-resolution stream with too little bitrate can look worse than expected, especially in scenes with fine detail or motion.

Frame rate (FPS)

Frame rate is the number of video frames displayed per second. More frames can make motion appear smoother, but generally increase processing and data demands at a given resolution and codec.

Codec

A codec is a method for encoding and decoding video or audio. H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AAC are examples named in the cited platform documentation. Devices and platforms do not all support the same codecs. Codec efficiency alone does not determine end-to-end quality; settings, bandwidth, and playback support also matter. See Google Cloud’s documented input and output options and YouTube’s encoder settings.

Adaptive bitrate (ABR)

Adaptive bitrate delivery provides multiple encoded versions, called renditions, so a player can use a suitable one as bandwidth and device conditions change. More available bandwidth may allow a higher-bitrate rendition; a weaker connection may lead the player to select a lower one to reduce interruptions. The selection behavior depends on the player and platform.

Rendition

A rendition is one encoded version of a stream, often defined by its resolution and bitrate. Several renditions can support ABR, but a service that receives only one version does not necessarily create others.

Ingest protocols and viewer delivery formats

Contribution and ingest

Ingest is the step where a creator sends an encoded stream to a platform or media service. RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT commonly describe this contribution leg. When comparing protocols, first identify the direction: creator-to-platform ingest is different from platform-to-viewer delivery. Some platforms support additional arrangements, so these roles are common patterns rather than absolute rules.

RTMP and RTMPS

RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is commonly used to send a live contribution to a platform. RTMPS is its secure counterpart. YouTube’s published comparison says RTMPS encrypts the contribution connection; the codecs, latency options, and other supported capabilities depend on YouTube’s documented configuration. YouTube: encoder settings for live streaming.

SRT

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is another contribution protocol. Google Cloud recommends SRT over RTMP for input to its Live Stream API, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth support. That is guidance for Google Cloud’s service context, not a universal rule. The encoder or transcoder and destination must both support SRT before it can be used. Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.

HLS and DASH

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) are HTTP-based, segment-oriented delivery formats. A player requests media segments using a playlist or manifest that describes available media. Low-latency variants and configuration choices can reduce delay, but the result depends on the implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These formats are often used for viewer playback, but they are not restricted to that direction: YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion. In YouTube’s comparison, HLS and DASH support additional codec choices and suit some high-resolution workflows, while their segment-based operation typically adds more latency than RTMP or RTMPS. Which is appropriate depends on destination support, codec needs, resolution, and latency target. YouTube’s protocol comparison.

WebRTC and RTP

WebRTC and RTP are associated with real-time communications where interactive, very low delay matters. They are not interchangeable with every broadcast workflow. Sub-second delivery is difficult when network conditions vary; reducing buffers may mean accepting visible artifacts or interruptions. The IETF discusses these tradeoffs in RFC 9317.

Packaging, origins, and content delivery networks

Manifest, playlist, and segment

In segmented HTTP streaming, a manifest or playlist describes media tracks and available renditions. The player requests segments as playback proceeds. HLS and DASH use this kind of delivery model; the manifest is an instruction map, not the video itself.

Packaging and packager

A packager formats encoded tracks and metadata for a delivery format. Packaging can arrange or multiplex media without re-encoding it. That differs from transcoding, which changes the encoded media itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Origin

The origin is the service or storage location from which packaged content is served before downstream distribution. It may be an origin server or another service that supplies the CDN.

CDN

A content delivery network (CDN) is a distributed network of servers that delivers content toward viewers and helps spread delivery load. It operates downstream of the origin or packager; it does not encode the creator’s source video. AWS describes this role in its CloudFront introduction.

Transcoding

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media into a different codec, bitrate, resolution, or set of renditions. It is distinct from packaging, which can change the delivery arrangement without changing the encoded media. A service may transcode one incoming stream into multiple outputs; not every workflow needs to.

Latency, buffering, and continuity

Latency

Latency is the delay between capture and playback. A conversational broadcast may prioritize near-real-time interaction; a conventional live program may accept a longer delay in exchange for steadier playback. Network transit is only part of the total.

Glass-to-glass latency

Glass-to-glass latency measures the time from the real-world event being captured to the corresponding media playing on a viewer’s device. Encoding and decoding, ingest, distribution, and buffering can all contribute. It is therefore broader than a network ping or network latency alone. The IETF’s rough categories are ultra-low latency under 1 second, low-latency live under 10 seconds, non-low-latency live from 10 seconds to a few minutes, and on-demand hours or more; these are broad technical categories, not promises for any particular platform. IETF RFC 9317 (2022).

Buffer and buffering

A buffer temporarily holds media data to smooth out delivery variation. Waiting to build a buffer can improve continuity but add delay. If the player runs out of buffered data, playback can pause while it waits for more.

Live-to-VOD

Live-to-VOD is a service feature that makes a live event available as video on demand during or after the event. It is a separate capability from the live delivery path and is not available in every service or configuration.

Choosing settings: bitrate is not a universal recipe

There is no single bitrate that guarantees good live video. The required rate depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, encoding parameters, amount of motion, and visual complexity. You also need enough upload capacity for the outgoing stream and headroom for normal network variation.

Google Cloud’s current Live Stream API documentation gives these H.264 input recommendations for its own service context. They are not universal requirements for YouTube or other destinations:

Input resolution and frame rate Google Cloud recommendation for H.264 input
720p at 25/30 FPS 8 Mbps
720p at 50/60 FPS 15 Mbps
1080p at 50/60 FPS 20 Mbps
2160p at 50/60 FPS 50 Mbps

Check the destination’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your encoder before applying any recommendation. Google Cloud’s figures are documented for that API’s input configuration, not as a guarantee of quality or a minimum upload speed for all streams. Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.

A practical way to use the glossary when troubleshooting

  • Video looks soft or blocky: Check the selected rendition, bitrate, resolution, codec support, and source detail. Raising resolution alone may not improve the image if bitrate or upload capacity is insufficient.
  • Playback pauses: Investigate network variation, available bandwidth, and buffering. ABR may switch to a lower rendition if one is available and the player supports it.
  • Audio or video will not play on a device: Check codec and format compatibility along both the platform and playback path; a codec accepted at ingest is not automatically supported by every viewer device.
  • Viewers are far behind the live event: Check the latency mode and buffering behavior, then examine whether the workflow uses segment-based delivery. A CDN helps distribute media but does not by itself determine glass-to-glass delay.
  • Encoder cannot connect: Confirm the destination’s ingest protocol and endpoint requirements, whether encryption is expected, and whether the encoder supports the selected protocol. Do not switch from RTMP to SRT unless the destination accepts SRT.
