To add a graphic overlay to a live stream, add it as a source in your streaming software, then size and position it in the scene preview. In OBS Studio, use an Image source for a static logo, border, or label, and a Browser Source for web-based elements such as alerts or chat. In Streamlabs Desktop, install an overlay from its library, import an existing overlay file, or build a scene with image sources.

Choose the right overlay workflow

What you want to add Suitable approach What to expect
A static logo, border, or label OBS Studio Image source Adds an image file or slideshow to a scene.
Alerts, chat, or other web-rendered content OBS Studio Browser Source Displays web content in the scene and may depend on the widget service and internet connection.
A ready-made themed design in Streamlabs Desktop Streamlabs overlay library Lets you choose a design and install selected components into a scene collection.
An existing Streamlabs overlay package Import an .overlay file Uses the Scene Collections import workflow.
Streamlabs overlay features inside OBS Streamlabs plugin Requires a compatible Windows and OBS setup; check the current plugin documentation.

Image and browser sources serve different content types. The available official documentation does not establish that one is always faster or lighter than the other.

Add a static graphic in OBS Studio

  1. Open the scene you want to use, or create a new scene for the layout. Scenes contain the sources that make up your stream.
  2. In Sources, add an Image source and select the graphic file.
  3. Select the source in the preview and adjust its size and position. Keep key parts of the camera, gameplay, presentation, captions, and platform interface unobscured.
  4. If the graphic should appear only in certain layouts, add it only to the relevant scenes or scene collection.
  5. Preview the complete scene at your output canvas dimensions. Confirm that the graphic is visible, aligned, and not covering important content before you go live.

Add a web-based overlay in OBS Studio

  1. Get the overlay page or widget content from the service that provides it. Treat account-specific widget URLs as private when applicable.
  2. In OBS, add a Browser Source to the scene. OBS describes this as an embedded browser for web content; its documentation names alerts and chat boxes as common uses. The OBS Project’s Browser Source documentation says it “allows you to perform all sorts of custom layout, image, video, and even audio tasks.”
  3. Enter the appropriate page or widget content. Set the source width and height to fit the overlay’s intended canvas.
  4. Check that the source appears in the preview, then resize and position it as needed.
  5. Preview the whole layout before streaming to make sure the widget is visible and does not obscure the main video.

If the overlay does not appear, confirm the URL is correct and available, the dimensions are suitable, and the source is visible rather than hidden behind another source.

Use overlays in Streamlabs Desktop

Install an overlay from the library

  1. Browse the overlay library and choose a design.
  2. Select the components you want, then install them into the scene collection.
  3. Review the resulting scenes and sources so the installed elements fit your layout.

Import an existing overlay file

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Scene Collections.
  3. Choose Import Overlay File and select the .overlay file.
  4. Review the imported collection and position or adjust its elements for your scene.

Build a scene manually

  1. Create or select a scene collection and make the scenes you need.
  2. Under Sources, add image files for the graphic elements.
  3. Arrange and size each source in the preview, then check the full scene before streaming.

Use the Streamlabs plugin with OBS

Streamlabs documents an OBS plugin workflow: install the plugin, open its overlay settings, and select an overlay. Its quick-start documentation lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements. Some changes may require restarting OBS. Plugin requirements and interface labels can change, so check Streamlabs’s current documentation before installing.

Fix common overlay problems

  • The image is missing: Check that the selected image file is available and that the source is visible in the scene.
  • The browser overlay is blank: Verify the widget URL, confirm the page is available, and check the source width and height.
  • The overlay is behind other content: Check source visibility and its placement relative to other scene elements; reposition or resize it in the preview.
  • The overlay is cropped or misaligned: Compare the source dimensions and placement with the output canvas, then adjust and preview again.
  • A plugin change does not appear: Restart OBS if the change requires it, and verify that the operating system and OBS version meet the plugin’s current requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud
