YouTube does not document a setting that makes an existing live broadcast start or loop from a chosen point for every viewer. If you are watching a live stream, you can use DVR controls when the broadcaster has enabled DVR, but those let you navigate available stream history; they do not set a shared start point. If you are broadcasting prerecorded video, set the start position and loop the source in your streaming software before it reaches YouTube.
First, identify which “loop” you mean
- Watching someone else’s active live stream: you can seek through available DVR history if DVR is enabled, but YouTube’s documented controls do not provide a universal start-at-this-point rule for the broadcast.
- Broadcasting your own prerecorded video: control the source before it goes live. In OBS, you can play a local file from a selected position and enable looping, or create a rotating playlist.
- Embedding an ordinary video: YouTube’s embedded-player API supports a start time and a single-video loop. Those player parameters are not documented as controls for an active live broadcast.
This distinction matters: changing a source changes what you broadcast, while seeking in a player changes only your own playback.
If you are watching an existing YouTube Live stream
Use DVR controls when they are available
YouTube’s LiveBroadcast API describes pause, rewind, and fast-forward controls for viewers when DVR is enabled. They let you move within the stream history available to the player. How far back you can seek depends on the available DVR history and player behavior. These controls do not establish a persistent start position shared with other viewers. YouTube LiveBroadcast API documentation
Can I make a live stream start from the beginning when I join?
The official YouTube documentation reviewed does not document a setting that makes an active live broadcast begin at a chosen point for each viewer. If the player offers a DVR timeline, you can try seeking within the available history; if it does not, a viewer-side start parameter is not a substitute.

What YouTube’s embedded-player start and loop parameters do
The YouTube IFrame Player API documents start as a positive integer representing seconds from the beginning of a video. Seeking targets a nearby keyframe, so playback can begin just before the requested time—usually no more than about two seconds earlier. This describes video-player behavior, not a way to set a start point on an active live broadcast. YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters
The same documentation describes loop=1 for a single video. For an IFrame embed, YouTube instructs you to set playlist to the same video ID as well. This repeats the player’s video; it does not document looping an arbitrary segment between two timestamps or controlling a current live broadcast.

Set a prerecorded source to a chosen point and loop it in OBS
- Add the video: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Choose the start position: Before sending the source to the live output, use its playback controls to seek to the desired point. OBS’s cited Media Sources documentation covers local-file playback and loop/restart controls, but does not specify a timestamp field for seeking; the exact controls can vary by OBS version. Check the preview to confirm the position.
- Enable repeat: In the Media Source settings, enable Loop. OBS will replay the file after it reaches the end.
- Choose what happens when the source becomes visible: Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if you want it to restart whenever it is activated. If you leave this off, playback follows the source’s visibility behavior rather than being instructed to restart on activation.
- Check the output before going live: Watch and listen to the OBS preview to verify the starting point, picture, and audio. Then start the stream. This controls the material sent to YouTube; it does not make every viewer’s player seek to the same point.
Loop a playlist of videos in OBS
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and build the playlist of files you want to rotate.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS restarts the playlist after it runs out of files.
- Check the playback and audio in the preview. OBS’s VLC source can stop or restart according to its visibility behavior, so confirm what happens when you hide and show the source.
For the Media Source and VLC Video settings, see the OBS Media Sources knowledge base.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video or a playlist running as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS and a computer running at home. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it is not a way to change the playback position of someone else’s existing live stream.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream does not start at the exact second: YouTube’s documented embedded-player seeking targets the closest keyframe, not necessarily the exact requested second. For an OBS source, verify the selected position in the preview before going live.
- The file plays once and stops: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a multi-file source, enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- The source restarts when you show it: Check Restart playback when source becomes active on a Media Source, and review the source’s visibility behavior. For VLC playlists, OBS may stop or restart playback as visibility changes.
- You cannot rewind to the start of someone else’s live stream: DVR may be disabled, or the player may not have the earlier stream history available. A player’s ordinary-video
startparameter does not set a live stream’s start point.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting prerecorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights to stream every video and audio track. Repeating a video does not grant permission to use it. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies: permission to broadcast and eligibility for monetization are separate questions, and reused content can affect monetization even where material is otherwise permitted. Do not assume that putting a documentary or playlist on a continuous live stream makes it eligible for monetization.
