You cannot insert your own uploaded clip as a manual pre-roll ad on an active YouTube live stream. If you want viewers to see your opening video before a scheduled event, YouTube’s supported option is a scheduled-stream trailer, attached in YouTube Studio to the stream’s watch page. It is available only to eligible channels and videos.
First, choose the feature that matches what you mean

YouTube says pre-roll ads run automatically when monetization is enabled, but its ad system decides which viewers receive one; it does not guarantee an ad for every viewer. Creators cannot choose a particular ad creative and insert their own video into that ad placement. See YouTube Help’s live ad guidance.
How to add your video as a scheduled-stream trailer
The trailer plays on the scheduled stream’s watch page before the live event begins. You do not need a Stream Deck or other physical product for this workflow; the setting is in YouTube Studio.
- Upload the clip. Publish the intended trailer to your channel as a regular YouTube video.
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose Go Live.
- Open the scheduled stream. Create a scheduled live stream, or select an existing one from the Manage tab.
- Open its customization settings. Select Edit, then Customize.
- Attach and save the trailer. In Trailer, click Add, select the uploaded video, and save.
Check eligibility and clip requirements
- YouTube lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.
- The trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long.
- Use a video format supported by YouTube and make sure the clip complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
- Confirm that you have the necessary rights to all audio and video in the trailer.
- YouTube recommends matching the trailer’s aspect ratio and resolution to the stream video.
See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings for the trailer setting and requirements. If the Trailer option is unavailable, check the channel eligibility conditions and confirm that you are editing a scheduled stream.

If you meant YouTube-served ads
For a monetized stream, open it in Live Control Room and review its monetization settings. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads turn on automatically when monetization is enabled; viewers who do not receive an ad continue to the stream. You cannot upload an ad creative of your own into this placement.
Mid-roll ads are a separate control
Live Control Room supports automatic, scheduled, and manual approaches to mid-roll ads. Those controls create breaks during the broadcast; they do not add an opening video before it starts. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls, while scheduled options let creators set intervals and manual insertion lets them choose when to take a break.
